Nice, but unlike the technollogy, the styling is hardly ground breaking.

I do like the proportions though... one of the advantages of using a V8 rather than a 10 or a 12 is that the rear deck can be much shorter, which in turn allows a more balanced distribution of the cars bodywork... I often think that some Supercars just look like a cabin stuck on the front of an engine.

The technollogy is where it at with the 918 though... the Hybrid system is the same as used on the 997GT3R Hybrid that was leading the Nurb 24h race with a few hours to go last year in its first ever race. And I read some numbers for emissions and MPG that were astonishing for any car, let alone one with the 918's level of performance.

No, but with styling you don't necessarily want "ground breaking" when you can go for ball-aching beauty, in the classic sense. It's amazing Porsche went ahead and built a car like this when the sedans and SUV's and lower-tier sports cars they make range between bland and insipid. Obviously the designers with functioning eyes got sent to the motorsports department where they were promptly told to build a sex goddess of a car. I mean:

That's just pornographic.

I just can't get over how cool that regenerative system looks in the passenger seat.

Its looks like some nuclear power source :sly:.... or an EMP weapon!

I've got a feeling Porsche knew damn well that they wanted something like this when the 918 Concept Study was being introduced back in March 2010. The name relation to the 917 & the heritage Porsche talked about bringing back should have been clues.

Most Porschephiles already suspected as much when the 918 was first shown. I mean, here was a car with obvious design cues from the Carrera GT, the 917 & the 911 GT1. Not only that, it's obvious that Porsche wants to get a heads up on Hybrid & KERS technology if/when ACO allows it for Les 24 Heures.

The RS Spyder derived V8 was another big clue of Porsche's intentions...

That car is gorgeous. I wonder what's with that Addidas sponsor sticker; is Porsche going to have them make "custom" racing shoes with Porsche name on it and sell it to the owners/racers of this car?

Adidas is the creator of all the Porsche Design products.

Haha! Nice:tup:

Is this a 2 seater car? Or does the mechanism take up where the second seat would be? Just curious.💡

Concept Numbers

as previously stated, a good balance styling wise, using other existing Porsche designs as a base. But everything else should be taken with a pinch of salt until they release something with production specs.

The 918 is going into production in its near current form; Porsche has reported demand from over 2000 buyers for it.

Wicked , I just hope it doesn't sports a short lifetime such as the Carrera GT.

The interior is pretty neat too.

Hartmut Kristen (Head of Motorsports) from Excellence Magazine:

— The 918 RSR takes the hybrid system from the GT3 R Hybrid and transfers it into a purpose-built platform.

— The 918 RSR is targeted at GT racing despite its carbon-fiber tub – because it is based on the 918 Spyder road car and thus will be homologated as such.

— Porsche will race the GT3 R Hybrid in 2011, as it develops the 918 RSR. (We expect the 918 RSR’s race debut will be in 2012.)

— The GT3 R Hybrid gains several refinements in its hybrid system going into 2011.

— Porsche Motorsport is considering entering the GT3 R Hybrid at Sebring, and is not worried about the new system on Sebring’s rough pavement.

— The 918 RSR, like the GT3 R Hybrid, requires at least ten technicians to handle the hybrid system, so it is not considered a vehicle for private teams at this time.

— The 918 RSR concept would not be fast enough to challenge current LMP1 and LMP2 cars, hence Porsche’s desire to see it categorized as a GT.

— Racing the 918 RSR in an “unclassified” category will not be enough – Porsche will look to enter it in a series that provides the best competition platform for the program, whether it be the ACO, the FIA, or the ALMS.

— The 918 RSR has not been tested in a wind tunnel. The rear wing will work just fine, but refinements to the shape will probably come later.

— No, the current leather seats won’t be used in the race car.

From carpoint.com.au:

"Porsche AG board member for research and development Wolfgang Durheimer told the Carsales Network that a member representing the ACO spoke to him at Detroit, soon after the car's unveiling with regard to the brand making another long-distance campaign at Le Mans.

Durheimer will take over the Bentley and Bugatti interests among the Volkswagen Group as of February, however motorsport is also part of his portfolio.

"We definitely want to be at Le Mans. It's the jewel in the crown of any racing effort."

And if Porsche returns to Le Mans it will be as a factory effort, says Durheimer.

"We are in discussion with the different rulemakers around the world to find a hybrid [race] category."

That would be an amazing sight to see; the 918 RSR starting a racing career similar to that of the 917.

In what way? it will have the most un-917like career ever!

Coincidence. Orange & Silver have been 2 colors Porsche likes to mix.

Or maybe because they have taken the 917 as a source of inspiration for this car...

Both the 'normal' version and the RSR look absolutely stunning.
With Porsche's reputation of being able to create wonderfully engineered cars, this without a doubt will be an amazing car.

I still think it's a shame that this is a hybrid car.
I'm not against hybrid or full electric power cars, especially when a car is just used for getting from point A to point B.
A sportscar however, should be pure, even if it's pure evil... ;)
