I would be loving this if you hadn't told me about the Orange Box being 5 quid last year...
:D
As you mentioned in that the Orange Box thread, you could make some form of Steam Deals thread-updating the title as required and all that jazz.
I have a few interested friends so thanks for posting this!
👍

I literally just borrowed the disc from someone at work (orange box, ps3) but given I'm a Mac guy , and the steam release for the Mac today, I'll be downloading it overnight. Seems steams servers are slammed during primetime EST today.

I needed something to get me to take a breather from BC2.

Aww, boo, You have to setup a steam account and also probably have to have all that connected to the server DRM software to play it. :indiff:

I have to say I'm a little disappointed in the Steam.app for Mac. It's just a direct port from the PC leaving alot to be desired on a Mac. The entire experience is a bit clunky but in the end the massive amount of work they had to do to get the thing (and games) to run on a Mac was massive. I can only hope it will improve.

All that being said, I spent about 45mins playing Portal. Very interesting game. However, playing anything with a keyboard and mouse feels inherently wrong (I've always been a console gamer).

I will however finally put the Orange Box disc into my PS3 and enjoy the game.

Oh no, you can easily play offline. There really is no DRM(that I'm aware of) other than fact you can't really take the game to another computer but that does not turn me away from a FREE game of portal.

Cool. Thanks for the link Gabkicks. I've never played Portal. I've seen it before and thought it certainly looked like an interesting concept but never had a chance to play it before.

You can, actually, if you make a copy of all the Portal game files and drop them into the \steamapps directory of Steam installed on another computer. Log into Steam using your original account and boom. Portal.

It's the same method for backing up your games, as the Steam Backup utility doesn't back up updates or DLC :grumpy:

This was a triumph.
I'm making a note here: HUGE SUCCESS
'Cause I can't run games on minimum settings
Apple Computers
We do what we want
because we can.
For the good of all of us.
Except the ones who aren't rich
but there's no sense crying when your Macbook just crashed
You just keep on buying 'till you run out of cash
And the quarter gets done
And awards get won
For the people who don't
Own a Mac
I'm not even angry,
I'm being so sincere right now
Even though you ruined my game
And billed me
And tore up my wallet
And threw every piece into a bank
As it burned it hurt because I was so unhappy of you
Now these brainwashed users make beautiful trolls.
And we're out of beta
We're releasing VALVE time
I'm so glad you got burned
Think of all the things we learned
for the people who still, own a Mac
Go ahead and leave me.
I think I prefer to stay locked down
Maybe you'll find someone else to help you
Maybe Ubuntu
THAT WAS A JOKE.
HAHA. FAT CHANCE.
Anyways, this PC is great.
It's so tremendiously fast
Look at me still talking
when there's computers to build
when I surf the net, it makes me glad I'm not you
I've executables to run
There is programming to be done
For the people who aren't on a Mac
And believe me I'm not, on a Mac
I'm playing games and I'm not, on a Mac
I run fantastic and I'm not, on a Mac
And when you're crashed I won't be, on a Mac
ON A MAC

Thanks for the heads up, I just got it and so far it's not living up to the hype, but it's free so I don't care. :D

Downloading as I type this. BTW I'm on a MAC :)

See how this runs, probably like a pile of brown but we can see.

Anandtech has an article comparing Mac and Windows performance. It's like 60% of windows framerates.

Also, this game rocks. So glad I got it for free since I never bought the orange box or anything.

It's going to be interesting seeing it run. As long as it's playable I'm not fussed about FR. I know the mac I have won't be a world class games machine but to play a few levels of Portal and the new Monkey Island stuff should be fun.

I'm surprised how good it runs on my system.
Already finished it on the PS3, but for free I couldn't resist. :D

Well I've now had a chance to play a fair bit of portal and I am pleasantly suprised. The first few stages are boring as hell but I guess they serve as a tutorial and the diffiulty ramps up fairly quickly to a level that gets you thinking enough that you stop and think a bit but never really get stuck and frustrated which is a very nice balance. Thanks for the free game Valve 👍

Just got through with the game after 3 straight hours, it's massive fun and I now know what I missed out on a few years ago :ouch:

Eventually around levels 18-19 I had to consult some youtube videos on how to solve it, but I attribute it more to being tired than anything (I was usually on the right path most of the time anyway, just not fast enough or slight misplacement of a portal)

From,
Chris.

Self quote to update

I have now finished it, a little short but more fun than I was having yesterday. I enjoy the comments made as you go though all the levels, especially at the end. :D

Well now I'm upset, apparently the drive for my iMac graphics card doesn't support the engine so wont play the game. Guess I will have to either wait for a fix or delete steam, what a oversight from Apple and Valve.
