Jordan, you should look into doing away with attatchments (for pictures) and replace it with imageshack hosting. Many have and I have always loved and trusted imageshack, so you might want to look into this. It could save you a lot of bandwidth and server space.

Very cool, I didn't know they had a syndication program like that. I'll look into it. 👍

This should also minimise massive pictures in threads too as they only show thumbnails don't they?!

Yeah I think you should look into it. Just think about all the Space and Bandwidth you will be saving! BTW I have stopped using GTP's attachment ( No offense) because of the limit and it is a bit slow also. I just love Imageshack its excellent and it doesnt have a limit on how many pictures you can store! I have well over 1100 images on my Imageshack ID thingy. :D

Imageshack does have a direct link to images on message boards. But what I love is their thumbnails. They are about the size of a avatar here at GTP so not really big and 56K friendly.

And when imageshack stop doing this or decide to start charging for the service, what happens to all the images?

What will happen? Like everything else, they will shut down.

We've seen so many of these type of free upload thingies stay for a year or two, then die-off. But GTPlanet has been hosting the same images since the time we uploaded them.

Yeah thats a good thing to think of but they have been active since November 2003 I believe. But lets say something terrible happens and they do go offline, then I guess its just a simple or complex matter of typing up a code that will allow this site to have attachements again I suppose? Maybe not that simple to do this code thingy but I am sure you can disable it and then reactiviate it again.

This could be a very good idea, I tend to use Image Shack anyway but not having to open a new window and all that would save alot of time, would be a very good idea 👍

They have a choice of thumbnails or full size images, the user decides. Here is the size of an imageshack thumbnail.

You can only use jpeg, jpg, png, gif, bmp, tif, tiff, swf. file formats. The max size is 1024kb in size. To host another type of file, like a .doc file or .zip file you would have to use another hosting service like - http://www.2and2.net/index.php - http://hostmyfile.net/ - http://www.upload4free.com/ -
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=%2Bfree+%2Bhost+.pdf
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=%2Bfree+%2Bhost+.doc
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=%2Bfree+%2Bhost+.zip

Where would people on the GT3 & GT4 forums save their gamesaves and replays for others to see?

BTW, the 2and2.net place says that you can only upload images, but they also let you upload .pdf, .doc, .ppt, and many other file extensions. I have used 2and2.net and hostmyfile.net before and they seem to work fine.

Limit the attatchment feature to only the replay format.

So limit the attatchment formats to .sps, .xps, and .max. If we would use Imageshack would we have less attatchment space than we do now?
Imageshack is not limited to the number of images you attatch. Only filesize. If you want, you can register (for free) so you can track your images. You still get unlimited uploads. If you really want, you can pay to get the ability to upload zip files of images. You buy credits at like $.01 per image in the zip file.

I realize what you said. I use Imageshack all of the time. I was asking if our file sizes would have to be smaller if we went to using imageshack. Are users allowed to store attatched files greater than 1024kb in size here at GTP, or is the 1024kb file size at imageshack larger than the attatchment space here at GTP, is my question.

Here is what I was trying to say -
Imageshack has a max file size of 1024kb.
GTP will allow you to attatch files to posts until you reach what size limit? What is the max size of your GTP accounts attatchment area?

I agree with everyone. Imageshack is the ultimate!!! I really dont know how they can keep going as a free website that hosts pics. They must have a MASSIVE server. Every site I go to or any Forum, EVERYONE uses Imageshack.

The catch is, if the image is not viewed in 30 days (or was it 60?) it is removed from their servers. That's how they keep space down. I assume the syndicated service would operate similarly.

I've not looked at any of my pics in really old threads for months, and they haven't been deleted.

Maybe not you...but somebody viewed those images...it may have even just been a search spider (such as Google, or GTP's own search feature).

On Imageshack IMAGES WILL NEVER BE DELETED! Go to their site and then go to the FAQ or just follow this link - http://www.imageshack.us/faq.php
And now go under OVERVIEW and then look for the question "Will my Images ever be deleted? " and then it states there that the Images willl never be deleted unless it has nudity and things such as that which is againts their AUP.
