The 1.8L Turbo in A4s is a great engine. Better than a 318i in terms of sportyness I bet.

In my opinion, 3-Series BMWs are overpriced in this country. When I was looking last year with around a budget of 10k, I found that I could get a base model, early to mid 90s, 318i for that price, with decent km's, not worth it, in my opinion, when I realised I can get a late 90s Audi higher spec for the same price. In the end got a 2000 9-3 Turbo S for under 10k.

BMWs may sound sporty, but a later model FWD Audi (Or Saab ;)) will be a lot more 'fun' than a 318i, they only have 80kw after all, and close to 12 second 0-100km/h. Though it will actually have some refinement and resale value, unlike a Commodore.

I probably should point out at this stage that I'm on P-plates. Turbo'd and V8s aren't illegal in South Aus but I won't be insured for one. That said even the atmo Audi 1.8L has some 10kW more power than the 318i which is good enough for me.

That Quattro also looks pretty tasty, and at a decent price too.

my VW Polo has the 1.8L Turbo and its a nice engine. Easily able to achieve 150kw at the fly with a simple ECU chip (same engine that was in the Audi TT). I reckon if you can find a good model in your price point an A4 is a great option.

In terms of prices of things breaking I imagine an A4 and E36 would be pretty similar. By that I mean, if anything slightly major goes wrong, mechanical or body work, it'll cost a boat load to fix. But general maintenance is the same as any other car.

With an A4, find a model that's low kms, get it checked out mechanically for anything serious, and you shouldn't have too many problems. I had a SEAT with a 1.8L VAG engine and it was pretty much bulletproof.

I wish the Euro cars werent so expensive over here. I mean if the 3 series and Mercedes, Audi and VW's were relative to the prices they are in USA and europe they would be such a strong seller over here.
