I'm fairly certain Jordan's decision hasn't changed in the last year:

I certainly understand the built-in smilie would make the image easier to insert, but since they're generally used to mock people, I don't think it's really something I want to "institutionalize".

The problem with linking to an external site, particularly a site like imageshack, is eventual linkrot.
