Pre-E3 rumor of a $100 price drop looking more solid

Various web sites are claiming that Circuit City has prepared a July 15 flier that would pretty well confirm a pending E3 announcement.

Assuming this is legit, how much impact will it have? VGChartz.com has been tracking American PS3 weekly sales at about 20K for awhile now, typically less than half of the 360's and 1/6th or less of the Wii's.
 
I posted this (mistakenly) in the MGS4 thread... but now I just noticed the "advertised prices: effective 7/15/07 - 7/21/07".

Drats. Looks like this isn't a sign of a price drop at E3.

Yeah I doubled checked the PS3 General thread 1st before posting, didn't think to check out the game specific threads though ;)

So you are suggesting this might actually be a temporary CC price drop? Could be, could be, but remember the ad fliers are always stated for 1 week's duration. For example, I just checked Best Buy's website and their add states "prices and offers good July 1-7, 2007." So this CC add could still suggest a permanent price drop. 👍

Ha, did you notice how quietly Sony has admitted this new "limited edition" model will not have the emotion engine in it? So now NA gets just as screwed on the backwards compatibility front as the Euros were from the beginning. God this whole next gaming generation is like watching a soap opera; lies, betrayals, false promises, jilted lovers, multiple villains, greed, glamor, devoted consumers etc. Oddly entertaining though. :odd:

You know this how? a few of those problems have been fixed, not all but a few.It wont be out till August, there could be 2-3 firmware updated before it even hits the shelves.

The current 60 GB model utilizes a hardware and solution for backwards compatibility, namely the Emotion Engine chip. The new 80 GB PS3 will use a software solution for backwards compatibility, similar to that currently found in the PAL model.

So still borked like I said. However, technically you are right there could be some OS revisions prior to release that will fix all the known issues. Maybe.
 
I expect it to be even more wide spread when the TV ads hit the market. Console sales are not that great during summer so it could spike when games like GT5 Prologue come out. I guarantee some will buy a PS3 just for the sampler of a game that wont be out for 8+ months after its released .
 
My local news was talking about it saying it was "official," so I assume that the official word will come down tomorrow out in California.

My two cents:

Depending on who you ask, its either going to be a good deal, or far too much. Granted, with the lower price you are arguably getting more console for the money, but the only real advantage (at least where I'm standing) is the high capacity disk drive built in, instead of the extra money with the 360 Elite.

I'd consider the PS3 if they actually had some games worth playing, but thus far, I've seen nothing to convince me that the Playstation is worth it.

We'll see what happens... I don't think $100 discount is going to save them without any decent games, but thats just my opinion...
 
This is great news. Only games that I "need" are the Gran Turismo games, plus, I'm dying to own a Blu-ray DVD player. I'm very into DVDs, so not being able to experience high def DVDs were killing me. I don't have 720p, but even with just 1080i on component cables, it should still be awesome.

I'm hoping to be able to afford one by this winter. If not, next spring at the latest. Extra $100 off helps. I'm very pleased. :)

If you're interested in HD movies, BDA is running a promotion that started last week where you get to pick five free Blu-ray movies out of a list of 21 titles. So that's another $125 savings. With the $100 price break you could break it down as:
  • $200 Next-Gen Console w/60GB HDD, WiFi, Free Online Service, and Multi-Media Server Support

When I bought my PS3 back in December, I looked at it like a $300 console and a $300 Blu-ray player, which in both cases was well worth it compared to what was out there. In fact, just as a Blu-ray player it was an easy choice for me as the only decent player at that time was Panasonic's $1,200 BD10 and the PS3 player is not only just as good, but adds many features the Panny is missing.
 
The price drop is pretty much official now. I'm willing to bet the console war has now begun. You will see more and more PS3 buyers finally buying it. I may pick one up, or wait until there's a promotion going around for a free game. :D

the Wii is no better when it comes to games but its doing ok from what i heard somewhere. PS3 is more than just a game machine, only viewed as a game machine its going to be hard to convince someone to get it.

You being so negative doesn't affect those who were waiting for a $100 price drop. I'm sure you weren't going to be the one to save them since not everyone shares your views.

Amazon already shows PS3 sales are going to go up with the PS3 being the number one selling item with its 2800% boost. When the rest of U.S.A. catches wind its going to sell even more.

I was at wal mart today and I just noticed the price drop here is $110! From $659 to $549! I think I might pick up a PS3 by the end of the week!

I've never understood why game consoles aren't the same worldwide pricewise (obviously in terms of exchange rate it'll be different) but why say if PS3s in America were $650 why aren't they over here say £325?

I don't think its being outstandingly negative, its being somewhat realistic. Granted of course that the PS3 has yet to be on shelves for a year, they just haven't ignited that spark with me saying "I need that console for that game!" Sure, Resistance was kinda cool, and Motorstorm wasn't too bad, but thats about it in my book. The shoddy ports from 360 (FEAR, I'm looking at YOU), not to mention a shrinking amount of exclusive titles, has kept some of us in the cold. Not to mention the price, once again...

Given that I'd openly admit that I've pretty much sided with Microsoft in this round, Sony could always turn that around. Push a few awesome games, make the price seem worth it, and I'll buy one. The main difference here is that Microsoft has the ball rolling, particularly given this holiday season (Halo 3, PGR4, Bioshock, Mass Effect, Blue Dragon, etc), and furthermore that Nintendo offers up quite a bit of fun for a low, low price... Sony keeps losing to me.

Either way, everyone but Nintendo will probably cut prices. It keeps things on an even keel.

We're still only a year into this war, and there really isn't a clear winner whatsoever.
 
I agree there is no clear winner but I don't agree that the PS3 isn't showing worth.
Games will be developed. Anyone who acts as if Sony will not come up with killer games is fooling themselves and no one else. :rolleyes:
Take into account the other functions a PS3 has (blu ray, etc) and you really do have a value worthy of purchasing (if you haven't already bought a 360).

Btw, G4 TV reported on this issue... Seems more and more likely to occur everytime I look into the subject. :mischievous:
 
You do make a point YSSMAN but to say you don't think it will help Sony says you believe everyone else out there feels the same way you do. Many are/were just waiting for some kind of price drop, the games come naturally. These people buying PS3 for that reason does help Sony. They have a few good looking games coming the next few months.

The price drop may not attract every PS2 owner it sure will give them a small boost.
 
I wouldn't disagree with that. I know a few people here in GR who were rather big Sony fans, but when the consoles were sitting at $600, they refused to buy one, furthermore, to "sell-out" to Microsoft or Nintendo. Cutting the prices will likely allow those folks to get one more easily, which is a really good thing for those guys and gals, but there are still plenty of people who are undecided.

Take for example my "boss" Joey at work. He has both a PS2 and an XBOX, and given that Microsoft has finally cut the cord on the XBOX, and that the PS2 is creeping to a rather slow death, he is having a helluva time deciding what he wants to get. On the one hand, as he usually says, he gets Blu-Ray and a bit more juice, but on the other he gets to save some money and have more games to choose from with the X360 (not to mention that quite a few of us have them at work).

I'm eagerly awaiting the Sony press conference at E3. We should know a lot more in just a bit over an hour, as this should prove to be a bit of a turning point for the console. Hopefully. We'll see...
 
Well I was going to buy my folks the Panasonic BD-10A Blu-ray player after they announced the price drop from $1,200 to $600 including 10 free Blu-ray movies, but with this $100 price drop on the PS3 and Amazon's promo that throws in for free the $25 PS3 remote (which also works as a 2nd controller) as well as a free Blu-ray edition of Memento and five additional free Blu-ray movies, this was too good to pass up. So the folks are going to have a nice surprise delivered to their door in a few days...

That's a pretty good price, but since I currently have no HDTV, I'm more likely to buy a Wii in the near future. Then I'll get the PS3 next year (or two) in conjunction with a TV upgrade. I'm also - stupid as it is - holding out for Sony to make rumble as part of the standard 6-axis controller. I'd miss that little feature in games that have explosions, impacts, etc.
 
Now what I'm hoping for is they drop the price another 100 bux cause the value of the free blu ray movies is around 125 bux. But that is a pipe dream, strange how Sony drops the price of their PS3 and THEN M$ follows suit even after the 360 is about 18 months old, 3x that of the ps3, AND....they have about a 35% failure rate on their 360's....hahaha! But I too need a neato HDTV b4 I get a ps3 and I hear the Vizio HDTV have built in HD Tuners so I can get local channels in HD for free :) (with use of standard coaxial cable that is)
