Indeed. I have to admit I was guilty of jumping at that comment.

I've caved and preordered for tonight. If anyone wants me to jump in and check anything out in particular as it launches then let me know.

Who's staying up with me?
I'll actually play at midnight for an hour before sleep and then play again tomorrow morning. I was going to wait until the next day but screw it.

I played the game for 40 min, here's my opinion of it:

1- Handling is controller focused, similar to Grid but much better and more fun.

2- Graphics are really really bad.

Overall, I think this is a better direction for the series, but need serious work on graphics. Previous releases especially PC2 were too complicated and cars physics were unrealistic and undrivable in most cases. People will dislike it because it has shifted from what it was, but as a game this is more enjoyable.

So, does anyone got to set up and tuning menu? Or it has disappeared? How it is even look like? Are upgrades expand set up menus, or it is presets without options?

Can you explain what you mean by bad graphics and also which platform you are playing on? Did you think pCARS 2 graphics were bad?

I meant the "visuals "it's honestly not up to date standards of games. I have it on PS4 pro. PC2 graphics are better.

This is the main downside of PC3. But the game is fun to play.

Thing be happening.

Game looks fine on PC. Like PC2, night lighting is not the games strong point. Day lighting and car models/surroundings look as fine as ever though. There appears to be some kind of TAA/blur filter added, not sure what I think of that. Gameplay wise I did the first couple of events, I'm getting a Driveclub/PGR feel with this so that's not too bad. Need to play more and different vehicles to be able to say more about this. But so far so good. :)

Oh, testing this on my old i7-4790k/GTX970 and doing 50-ish FPS at 1440p.

Only 1 PS4 Pro player I know is playing, he likes it. I just started the game on PC, graphics are great with no adjustments. I hope the console players have comparable graphics.

First career mode, murdered the AI by 4 seconds, FFB is too heavy at default and feels a bit odd and inclined to slide using the EVO.

How does the driving feel compared to PC2 (using the same settings of assists)?
The same or dumbed down?

With just 5 hours left, I haven’t watched any career mode walkthroughs from GameRiot except for the early gameplay footages. So I have no idea what the menus looks like(besides a small glimpse of what was shown in trailer) or the ost within the menu selection, which I never get bored listening to from the first two games. Just want to experience this myself.

Based on the two cars I’ve tried so far, the EVO and GT86, it feels slightly dumbed down.

It’s not bad by any means, but it’s a disconnect coming from playing PC2 earlier this evening.

FOV can be adjusted, but no seat position changes, button box works, no sign of UDP and I’ve not managed to remove the motion blur yet.

Oh and I have to say Jimmy Bs comment about the UI looking like a mobile game is not wrong, and why is everything so bloody yellow!

Right need to try the Formula Rookie and A110.

So custom race options.

Can choose either race or practice, laps up to 99, AI up to 31 (on Oulton Park at least), opponent vehicles can be set to any, same class, identical, or same PIR range. Rules and penalties either on or off and grid position front middle back or random.

Same PIR range gave me an odd field of mostly Porsche 959s and Escort RS1600s when I chose the Megane TCR.

Thank you Scaff, your insights are always valuable and very welcomed. :)

Ok I just dropped from 4th gear to 1st in a Formula Jnr at a wet Oulton Park, which should see me spinning immediately, actual end result, I just slowed down a lot!!!!
Sounds like Enthusia is likely to keep its crown in my book, then.

Strange. I wonder what they changed to introduce that kind of stability.

Can you do me a favour and try the Alpine A110 for me and let me know what you think, as I might just be tired, but it seemed to drive like crap.

It’s disappointing to me I’m afraid. I regret the purchase.

First up I will say the graphics aren’t bad at all. It’s pretty much on a par with PCars 2 and actually reminds me a lot of how Forza 7 looks and feels. Very smooth even with lots going on and it’s definitely sharper and cleaner than PC2. I can’t find anywhere to turn off motion blur which is bad to the point of distraction for me. I turn it off in any game that lets me, plays havoc with my eyes. (Xbox One X, prioritise resolution)

I find the sounds worse, the balance is wrong and it doesn’t have the rawness of some racing games, inc PC2. But I thunk it’s an audio balancing issue more than dumbed down sounds.

It is definitely pad first, wheel second. It does feel fun on a pad, however there are some huge caveats. The game is heavy handed to the extreme. All assists off in the Formula B in Catalunya and its like a pro drift setup. That’s not to say it just slides all the time, the car has plenty of grip, but when it does break loose you don’t really need to do much as there is an assist working in the background to counter steer for you, which means you can hold crazy drifts for this type of car. And it can’t be turned off. There’s too much damping on the controller for me, loses a lot of the feel and with the counter steer assist it’s just lacking that connection that Forza and Gran Turismo give you. It doesn’t take much skill to play.

This plays into the physics feeling dumbed down for sure. With heavy handed assists, no damage, it becomes a bit of a bashing fest with bigger fields of cars. So any jam e to the driving physics is lost in the sense that it doesn’t really matter. It doesn’t feel like Grid, but you can play it like Grid. Just bash around. I think the underlying physics are there but they do take a backseat and don’t really matter. All the talk of dynamic driveline modelling, completely irrelevant.

Corner cutting penalties are absolutely crazy harsh. Running 11th out of 31, went wide on a turn, deemed to be a cut despite losing time and it slowed me down so much for so long I went to 31st, 3 seconds off the next car. Crazy.

Career mode will be a grind, you don’t get credits for races just for levelling up at certain points in the XP bar. So cash can be hard to come by. This wouldn’t be so bad if custom race had more options to have some fun races but it doesn’t and in the races I did I had some absolutely ludicrous fields of cars that, for me personally, ruin the enjoyment. 90% of my time would be spent in custom races to grind credits and have fun and it just isn’t there for me unfortunately.

Livery editor is solid, plenty of options, loads of real world decals and some nice looking fictional ones, lots of options with race numbers plates and license plates. Don’t have to buy wheels they are just all available in customisation.

There is tuning and car setups, but there’s 3 default setups and a 4th slot you have to buy with credits to effectively unlock the tuning. And it seems to be the same set of parameters regardless of car so there’s no ability to adjust turbo pressure in the Lotus 98t for example.

On the plus side, along with the graphics. There’s lots in career mode and the car and track list are excellent.

I will however be seeking a refund as it is just not worth the asking price for me. I’ll get some flack I’m sure but the heavy handed assists you can’t turn off, the atrocious grids you get in custom race which you’ll be doing a lot to try and grind XP and credits, the distractingly painful motion blur and the lack of fun I’ve had in custom racing, just simply don’t make it worth my hard earned cash. It’ll be fun at £25-£30.

Was really surprised you decided to get it. Seemed like it wasn’t a game you were looking for. Just gave in to the last minute hype? It’s good you can get a refund.

Thanks for the notes btw. Sounds kind of what I was hoping for, which is a good fun game with a pad that I can play on the couch that still has all the tracks from pCARS 2. I don’t know if I’ll get it full price either, we’ll see if I need a game to tie me over till Cyberpunk, but will get it at some point. Should be even better with some patching as per usual.
