Depends on the circumstances - some motors are better revved all the way through, some are better being 'short-shifted' at the red-line.

If you run a quarter mile test you'll find there's little difference in either method - it's more important to get the launch right.

So, in response to your question - whichever you feel like.

If it was real-life and you were paying the engine bills - it would be the at the red-line.

not really, i wait a 1000 or a 500 before the redline then i shift, that way the torque kick wont be as big and you would lose much time because of it

It varies according to the car, as Vat_man says. Some cars don't really benefit from being sent past the redline (AM Vanquish is one), others thrive on it, particularly the F1 cars. Usually, you'll hit the rev limiter at the end of the first red segment on the dial.

If your asking when to shift, here it goes. I shift right when the red light flashes. Thats on top speeds on straights though. Through turns it varies. Sometimes I will shift low rpm so I will get good acceleration.

It depends on the car, as others have mentioned. The peak horsepower RPM gives you a clue where you should be shifting (ie: if your 4-5 shift drops you 1000RPM, try to shift ~500 above your peak HP RPM), but you can't tell much without the car's torque curve to look at. Then you would take the gear ratios into account and calc the points for all 150 of your cars. If you've gone this far, you have no life and you should memorize all the shift points! If you DO have a life just shift at redline, no worries...

I first find the max RPM of the car, topping it out. Then when I drive I go right up to that RPM, shifting before it tops out. On some cars, like the Cameros, Corvettes, Mustang, and other V8s, I shift in the power band. But most cars I take to the limit.
