The DVD/CD-Rom drive is completely unaccessable once running Linux. You can plug in an external dvd/cd-rom drive though, or you could network another computer and use its dvd drives... The PS2 Linux can play media files listed up there, and it has its custom version of Mozilla, I believe. Just remember this: TV resolutions are mighty low, unless you have a HDTV, and the default resolution for the PS2 Linux on TV monitors is something smaller than 800x600.
 
I don't want to port anything from X86 to MIPS for PS2. That's just rediculous. A $500 PC is faster than the Playstation 2. And anything not customized for PS2 is going to run like utter crap on it.

What I want to do is get basic utilities like chat, web, email, and audio players working. There are plenty of them availale in source format that can be compiled to run on just about any hardware with just a little tweaking. And there are people who have already done the tweaking.

Television 'resolution' is really low. something like 640 x 480 ... not really sure. There is an enormous difference in sharpness between RCA and S-Video that is very evident with sharp text like is used on computers.

I think I'm going to buy the HD adaptor and play with Linux on my friends 1080i HDTV. That would be so awesome (:

That what's my friend and I are going to do hopefilly friday. I wish I was stupid rich so I could buy 1000 PS2 w/ Linux Kits for a Beowulf Cluster. That's what about $45,000 worth of Sony Equipment. I wonder what you can do with a 1000 node Beowulf Cluster? If you don't know what a Beowulf Cluster is, it a bunch of computers acting like one big fast computer!

Yeah I'm aware of Beowulf (: Actually, a friend of mine is a network security guy at a HUGE corporation. He showed me a couple nice clusters they're running in their data center. One is a 400+ Dell cluster and another is a 300+ Compaq cluster. They're seeing which one is more cost effect. Well dummies, you own them both now ... congradulations.

So you've got the Linux kit? It's pretty spiffy I think. And when I'm tired of it, I'll still have all the functioning hardware for the HDD games and networkable games ... yeah those things we keep hearing about but not seeing (:

Not yet Sony called me today(Monday 20th, of Jan. 2003) to approve the order I'll have it in 5 to 7 days. I've heard that you can use the hardware for Asian & European Games. None for the U.S. Market yet though. I wonder if we can use the NIC for SOCOM Navy Seals?

Yeah the NIC is a standard nic. Actually, it's identical hardware to the ethernet adapter you can buy seperately, except that the seperate one includes a modem. I don't do modems. Modems are for wussies (:
 
So have you done anything cool with it yet? Inquiring minds want to know. :)
 
Surfed the net, copied mp3s from my computer and played them with XMMS ... right now it's running the RC5-72 crack. I named it ninja (:

But like I said earlier, it's a toy. Just turning it on and seeing

:D, that's cool enough man! Does it disable normal PS2 operation or do you boot from the CD?
 
Yeah, it loads pretty much like a game would. That's the only way the hardware knows how to boot. I'm sure they didn't want to mess with the PS2's firmware just to run Linux. This way they can get more people "playing with it" and fewer people screwing up their PlayStation 2 (:
 
It has to be booted from the disk, yes. It also requires the memory card.

The PS2 reads a boot loader from the DVD, which sends it looking for config files on the memory card and drivers for talking to the hard drive which then boots the Linux system.

And I think I fux0red my install. I want to update the kernel anyway, so I think I'm going to reinstall the whole system and update first thing.
