ay yous

Recently, ive been into the whole audio thing and ive decided to use my PS2 as my audio/video player. Playstations are well known to be above average cd players, especially the old ps1 with model number SCPH1001. My 1001 stopped working recently so im using my ps2. Only thing that annoys me in the fan noise. So i took it apart and unplugged the fan. It is now very quiet and plays cd's and dvd's well. My only concern is, will it overheat when i use it for gaming? I know the newer slim ps2's are fan-less so i dont know if my old big ps2 will work without a fan. I dont want it to overheat and cause any internal damage or burn down my house :dunce:

Wait, so you removed the stock fan?

Other than that, on the 1-million mile thread in the GT4 race reports section, it said that overheating PS2s are a myth, the owner having left it on for 60 full days in trying to reach this milestone.

However, I wouldn't recommend removing the fan, though it can last for a long time without it. Hot air cannot be channeled as efficiently without it, and more lingers in the PS2, shortening its operational life. I must add, though, that nothing spontaneous occurs.

It's quieter when elevated a small ways off the ground. And brush that intake vent!

Ok, i was just playing a cd a few minutes ago. Suddenly, the music stopped and the red power light started to blink. I turned it off and restarted it and now it works. Should i plug the fan back in?

Yes, if only not to probe any farther in a risk-filled venture.

Drilled holes would likely work.

I'd say if you insist on using it without the fan, disassemble it so there's as much airflow around the CPU as possible. And don't lock it in a cupboard, it'll need airflow.

I don't know if the slim PS2 is fanless, I seem to remember Sony saying that the PS3 fan would be as quiet as the slim PS2 (thus suggesting that it has a fan).

I personally think running the PS2 without a fan for gaming would be fine, if your in a breezy room and the vents are all nice and clean I don't think it cause any harm, the systems meant to shut down if it gets to hot anyway right?

You could leave the cover off that would also help... or fit a huge passive heatsink!

Its like a 10 year old chip... how hot can it run?... well I suppose quite hot ;)

No, it wont play games, for long. If you take the fan out, you wont be able to play games past five minutes before the thermal sensor trips the automatic shut off.

I know from experience. When the PS2 first came out, my fan didn't work. I had to send it back to Sony so they could fix it.

The slim PS2 (PSTwo) doesn't require an internal fan because it doesn't have an internal transformer. The fat PS2 does require an internal fan, because it does have an internal transformer.

Transformers are massive heat sources.
