My Box of Magic has finally expired.:grumpy:
Have I lost all my progress so far or can I move the hard-drive and just carry on?
Or am I starting all over again (having to buy all the VGT cars that I was given in the Seasonals, etc.)?

Did you backup your gamesave to a usb flash drive?

The HDD will be formatted in the new PS3 if you do swap it, so whatever is on it will be lost.

You can extract your old save data from the hard drive (although I'm not exactly sure how) and transfer it to your new one. As long as the data isn't corrupted and the hard drive is still working its always there for the copying 👍

Only the USB drive can save your progress. But otherwise, you can't man.

Cheer yourself up with these delicious cookies. Made my day better when my PS3 died unexpectedly.

Cheers.
I hope so.
I must do further enquiries.

Yeah have a search around and see what you can find, I remember when I sent my dead PS3 away to be fixed they said it was possible to extract the data off the hard drive onto external storage if you wanted to transfer it onto a different PS3, I'm not exactly tech savvy so I can't give you more info unfortunately.

My understanding is that a hard drive is a hard drive, if you have the right plug to connect it then you can access and copy the data stored within provided that its not corrupted. 👍

Yeah. I thought that'd work if I can find the way to connect it off-board.
Cheers for the support.

Sorry to hear that @Dr Fourtrack. If you have PlayStation Plus your game save would have been backed-up for you too.

Phew.
Thank you all.
So much conflicting advice.

Am still looking for a decent PS3 Slim at an affordable price, so I haven't been able to try out any of this yet.

I would advise against buying second hand.

What are you looking for, slim or super slim?

At the moment, the cheapest new 12gb super slim I can find is @ Argos priced £149.99, you will also need to buy the HDD bracket separately, possibly from ebay and should be under £10

I have the same doubt too. I'm saving for 500 GB version which costs 300€. But I don't think that my parents will let me buy an second hand PS3 through internet.

Get a 12gb version and buy the bracket and a 500GB or 1TB HDD separately, It's possibly a bit cheaper [depending where you buy from] and you could have twice the storage capacity.

http://www.scan.co.uk/products/1tb-...-5400rpm-8mb-cache-12ms-also-ps-3-compatible-

There you go 500GB super slim for £196 or 1TB for £209 👍

I got mine via gumtree for £125 for a 12GB slim that had been upgraded to 240GB + 2 controllers and GTA 5, hasn't skipped a beat in the time I've had it.
If you don't like anything about the product or the seller then you are under no legal obligation to buy, have them show it working and playing a game, listen to the start up and when the cooling fan kicks in. Avoid models that are over 3yrs old and if it appears to be a student house then its probably had a tough life. 👍

I got my 12gb from HMV for £119.99 and added a 1TB spinpoint M8 for £57 from ebay [can buy those for £45 now] and the bracket was £8.99 :D

@Dr Fourtrack - Yes you can, & here's how.

I'm not sure if that's permanent, or if you have to go through the set up every single time. If it's not permanent, then do it once & back up your data to an external hard drive.

Or, if you just want to retrieve game data, you can just buy an external USB hard drive caddy off ebay for under a tenner, then slip in your drive & connect it to a PC or laptop.

👍

That HDD is a bit pricey for a 250gb, the two I've posted above are only a few more pounds for 500gb or 1tb. I wouldn't buy from amazon, there are plenty of cheaper places to shop for such things.

EDIT: I've just clicked the link, it IS a 500gb and not a 250gb as you have written.

Thank You. Thank You. Thank You.
Will have a new (old) machine soon.

I'm reluctant to buy a new machine, as I'm sure I'll be getting a PS4 at some point. (I don't have the money to throw around on New machines all the time).

I've seen in several places (including my brother) that the Slim is a much better made machine than the Super Slim, so that is what I was going for.
