Perhaps they can or are testing this potential issue by running Gran Turismo 5 SLS AMG Driving Experience in the Mercedes Museum 24/7, then we shall find out if it passes the test of running it for more than a few hours.

I believe these are the old test sytems too. Correct me if i am wrong but i have seen pictures where the PS3's being used have the word test on the to show they are not the normal PS3 systems.

I bought my PS3 on Launch date March 2007. Since then I have always kept it away from any other electrical device that generates heat and made sure that it is in a cool area of my living room. Cleaning your PS3 is very important too as I usually use a vaccum cleaner to suck out all of the dust from the vents and even where the disc is inserted.

All electrical products like Radio, Hi Fi, TV, and even the cars we drive on road are tested for extremly long periods of time so that they are reliable as not to catch fire or short out in any way causing you to get an electrick shock or burn down your house while your out. I always keep my PS3 on for at least 4-6 hours and sometimes longer, but have kept it on for two days straight to see how it would fair and I got no problems. It's winter out so I suggest keeping by the window so all that cool air can keep your PS3 working at 100% capacity.

I would say that the condition that you keep your game discs in shows how well you treat your PS3. I have seen some Used game discs that are scratched and dirty with stuff I would not like to think about which tells me that your PS3 on the inside where the disc is being read is as equally dirty if not worse. A lot of people are like children with grubby hands and spilling things around a console which you have spent so much money on and when it goes wrong the blame goes straight back to Sony. I dont know if the heating Issue is the cause of the YLOD, but making sure that you keep it Cool and Clean will make a difference.

For every 10 degrees centigrade you increase the temperature of a piece of electrical equipment you half its life. If it has an expected life of 10 years and you increase its temp to 20 dc above normal operating temp it will reduce its life to 2.5 years!!!! This is a fact widely aknowledged by Cedia. You have been warned

My 3 year old son accidentally turned on my original PS3 while the glass door was closed... my wife said it sounded like a jet (cooling fans going into overdrive!). No permanent harm done though. Now if I'm gonna be gaming for a long period, I have a small adjustable fan I use to draw the air OUT of the cabinet, NOT into the PS3... works like a charm!

Yeah another thing is, if its in a confined space like a TV cabinet, you do need some sort of ventilation for that or it just turns into a big oven that cooks your PS3's insides (i've heard stories of PS3 and Xbox 360s in confined spaces on at the same time, the heat given off by the PS3 fan causes the XBox to red ring. Sony made a console that can assassinate the competition 👍). Ideally, just keep it open to the air all the time and make sure the vents arn't blocked with dust (Clean it out every now and again) and your console should be able to stay on indefinitely.

i have the first ps3 60gb and i have left it on for months at a time and it has never overheated or taken a dump on me!! i wipe away the dust everynow and then but it still works like its brand new! i love my system possibly the best design!!

i wipe away the dust everynow and then

Just keep any furniture polish or anything away from it. I also vacuum out the vents now and again.

Mine used to be in a cabinet but it started sounding like a jet taking off, now sits vertical behind tv and been fine since.

PS3 is a computer, it can run for days non-stop. I know people that don't turn off their computers ever, ever!

Some people reckon it's less damaging to run computers continuously rather than turn on and off due to the heat cycle causing expansion and contraction (maybe other reasons) , I dunno and I think it's mixed opinion.

Superfan?

no...

SUPER Fan.

that should keep it cool.

I was concerned about the heat of the air in my tv cabinet aswell,so i made up a extaction fan setup with two old PC tower cooling fans in a cardboard box with a PVC pipe running out of the back of the box throught the hole in the back of the cabinet where the cables run to pull the hot air out. It`s works well. I have a elec temp gauge in the cabinet and you can see the temp drop straight away when i turn them on. My 60GB PS3 usually runs (at the vents on the right side...Horizontaly sitting) at around 47 deg c and 50 or more with no fans on.

If my Slim PS2 could take a week of Nurb 24H (Three days on...just for the lights to go out at hour 13 :banghead:) I'm sure my Slim would last too. Although I don't know why I'm quite confident KY will introduce saves...

DIY FTW!!! Sounds like a good setup there premhz.

Oh, and be careful if vacuuming the air ducts on your machine; I've heard too much suction can be a bad thing (at least for your PS3...)

Define 'a lot'.

From what I've read (I'm quite up to date on the latest goings on in the console and PC world), the PS3 has an overall failure rate of between 10%-15%.

It's not 0%, which is unnacceptable, but it's certainly not 'a lot'.

You're right when saying the newer systems using CPU/GPU's from a smaller fabrication process are more efficient/cooler-running though.

Actually, I'd say I follow all the news concerning Playstation 3 and tech stuff in general and I've never seen those numbers before.
In addition, none of my friends have had problems with their PS3's (many since launch).
Could we get a reference, possibly?

As can too much dust/fluff clogging up the vents/fans. So unless you want to start taking your PS3 apart it's the only way I can see to removing it if it becomes a problem.

I personally won't be leaving mine on for extended periods of time, my launch 60 gig died a couple years ago, no fault of my own kept it dust free, and it has lots of room around it. Got Sony to fix it, broke again couple days after this past xmas, went out and bought a slim.

Why don't you all just write to Mythbusters? Tell them that a PS3, if played continuously, will generate enough heat that it will cause nearby 360s to red ring. Make it out to be some kind of conspiracy and I'm sure they'll do it.

Not a bad idea actually. Would be interesting to see what it takes to kill a ps3(heat wise). If they cant Kill it they just blow it at the end of the segmant 👍

I did it mainly to try and keep the damn fan quiet, but alas :scared: anything i try has no effect and it still sits there blowing it`s noisy little heart out:grumpy:,it`s no problem when playing but when watching a movie or PlayTV it`s highly annoying! :ouch: I also have it sitting on a powerwave stand which sits on top Laptop cooling pad and the PS3 sitting on top of that and also twin fans attached to the rear vent of the PS3.

I blow compressed air into the front vents to clean the dust out. I might give vacuming a go instead.

Right now as i just got home from work it`s 28 deg C in the lounge room and outside in the shade it is 30 deg C

That's quite hot :) Might actually be hot enough to explain the heat problem.
I think people here often forget that the situations and places where these machines are used can vary quite tramatically. Here the room temp is around 19 C and obviously my PS3 is quite quiet...

My original ps3 recieved a welcome yellow light of death after watching a 3 hour movie from "a overheating issue." I can't imagine 24 hours.

My fatty PS3 hasn't had issues yet, and it has been running 24/7 for almost two years now.

I had the same problem with my PS3 fat and tried similar solutions with the same result. I eventually ebayed it and got a PS3 slim on release day so was good timing but still cost about £80. The PS3 slim is quiet and the warranty softened the blow.
Another solution is to buy a very long HDMI cable and put the PS3 where you cant hear it. The bluetooth controllers work from quite far away but test first!

I thought of that aswell and also a few other ideas, but what i decided on was best for me,next was to move it 👍

bought my ps3 a year after release. so yes. 60GB ... 4USB ports (don't the newer ones have 2 ;) ) hehe 60GB model ftw.

i THINK it is a BIT louder than it was originally. i cant remember that far back. and it isn't excessive because i don't take the noise it takes as "loud" anyway. it still quietly purrs away then randomly goes a bit "louder" (not loud) then sometimes quietens down again. sometimes stays quiet (or i just can't notice the slight change, because in my opinion it is still very quiet)

the air out the back can be hot, can be only slightly warm. the little area on the back at the very top of the ps3 (when stood up) gets very hot, but i presume thats normal.

i have played it for like 6 hours straight a few times, not to much in one go overall. but total play time would be quite high I imagine.

i actually fully believe my fat ps3 will survive GT5 and i also fully believe i will never have to replace it. Lets hope I'm right !! xD

I don't worry about my PS3 overheating as much as my fatty sucking up good electricity if I leave it on for like a week or more.
