PS3 Heat and GT5?

After 3 months of ownership I finally cured the HDMI issues with a "Gefen-hdmi-detective-plus‏".
(From http://www.futureshop.co.uk/gefen-hd...us-p-2540.html )

Expensive, but worth it not to have the GT5 screen dissappear mid-corner (futureshop "lessened my risk" by offering to buy it back if it didn't cure the issues - they have obviously sold these to PS3 owners before!).

If anyone reading this post tries the same fix make sure you attach the Gefen unit directly to the PS3 using the supplied Gefen "blue cable" for this connection (after programming the Gefen to your TV first).

I would have happily paid Sony another £100 to have had them make the PS3 hdmi output work reliably in the first place but this is the solution

the cpu and gpu can stand very high temperatures. What to worry about is the HDD. The lifespan of the HDD will be increasingly redused at high temps.

first of all, it's about a Playstation 3 slim that I'm talking about. Yesterday I played Metal Gear Solid 4 for about 3 or 4 hours (yes, too much, I know), I tought that my PS would just melt. Ok, it's exaggerated, but I'm preoccupied about this matter when thinking about GT5.

Because if we're going to have 24 hour races in GT5 and we'll have to leave the console on for more than 3 days (I usually do the 24h of Nürburgring in 6 days when playing GT4) this is going to be a great problem.

Would you image Kaz being forced to introduce pit-saves for the endurance races because of the Playstation's heat issue (if there's any, I don't know, I just think that it's way to hot in that black plastic box).

What do you guys think?

Your PS3 is stronger than you're giving it credit for. My FAT 40GB PS3 has been on non-stop since November 24! That's 2,102 hours. It runs perfectly fine. I can attribute that partially to the fact that it is regularly cleaned and runs in a room that is rarely above 14C.

If the ps3 cannot handle the heat from being on 24hour then the 24 hour races would not be in the game. Sony would not allow them to be in the game. My old 80gb with card slots has been on for almost a month straight now grinding b spec. It has not even been hot yet. Yeah it sounds like a hairdryer but it is not hot. Thats how im level 40 on both a and b spec

I kept my 360 on for like 8hours one day while playing forza and 360 elite died. I didnt even know that the elite could get Red Ring of Death. Xbox 360 junk. First Xbox was awesome. I still play it sometimes. Ive killed 2 360s and I own 3 PS3 systems and they are usually on all day. PS3 better

i had bought a brand new slim the day gt5 came out left it on for about a week straight and died on me after two months of use. only game used was gt5. so i returned it, got another slim but this time bought one of those ps3 slims coolers that attatch to the back and havne't had any issues yet. I do notice every once in a while the game will freeze or the words on the top will studder before a race. That's when i know to give the ps3 a cooldown.

I bought a (obviously used) 60GB PS3 around the launch of GT5 (to replace one stolen last year), stood vertically on the floor with nothing close to it. It died the 2nd week of January. :( Luckily it was bought with a 12 month warranty, and the shop replaced it with a machine from another branch in the city. The 2nd 60GB PS3 GB lasted 2 weeks. :banghead: I've now been waiting 2 weeks for another 60GB to come in stock. :(

There will obviously be more people who say that their PS3s work non stop at extremes because more work than not. It doesn't seem to be a common thing that kills them, apart from being boxed in ox a shelf and overheating.

I think I was just unlucky because I was buying 4 year old machines, with no idea how they have been treated. Hopefully the next one will last a bit longer. At least 11 months so that it dies within the warranty. ;)

So is this a classic example of false economy? Could you've just bought a new PS3 and not had any headaches?

I wanted backwards compatibility, like I had when I bought my original PS3. After being disappointed by GT5, I found myself striking up GT4. The 60 GB PS3 is the only version that allows that, so that is the one I want. And before you say it, yes, I could use a PS2 and get a new PS3, but I want to have one machine which plays my games. ;)

Oh, and btw, buying a new machine does not guarantee no headaches, it just minimises the chances of failure. ;)

My PS3 died (YLOD) today after the 1.06 update:(

Guess my Ps3 didn't appreciate the heat after a few hours of gaming.

The worst is that I will not be able to afford a new PS3 until after summer.

After seeing MANY threads about endurance races like this, and people actually doing them, I've thought it's safe to do so.

Running a PC/console 24/7 without turning it off is actually smarter than just turning it off when you head to the store and return home and turn it back on (not sure about. 9hr break when you're sleeping though).

Sort of like a lightbulb-more energy needed to turn it on than to keep it on.

I'd probably experiment myself, but I'd rather buy another one before hand.

I bought my 60Gb 'fat' PS3 on the UK launch day. So that’s what, march 07?

It died on me a few months back, YLOD. I took it apart, refluxed it, and it’s been working ever since. It's been back to its 6/7 hour days of being on. Not as long as other people I know, but still. I'm still wary of leaving it on for that period of time, but to be honest, its running quieter now than it ever was. So obviously the chips aren’t getting as hot. Technically, its also worse to keep turning the console on and off than leaving it on for prolonged periods of time due to the expansion and contraction of the solder. Which is what causes the problem.

Anyway, for people like me, I would love to have a save feature. I wouldn't want to be able to do any other races or anything else in between. I want it to be so that when I load GT5 back up, I have the option to either continue or quit the race. That way I would actually be able to do the 24h races. I genuinely don't feel as though I could leave my PS3 on for several days in order to complete one. I wouldn't trust it, not after the first YLOD, because there’s only so many times you can fix it. So a save feature would be the only way to go.

i finally turned off my PS3 today because i didnt have time to leave the Bobs running an enduro. it was turned off for about 7 hours. It's the first time i turn it off in over 3 weeks.
The PS3 is fine and it wont break.

I rarely hear the disc spinning when I play GT5, and I assume its because the game runs off the HD. I notice my PS3 doesn't get as hot when playing GT5. I have an 80GB for 3 years now, no problems and I leave it on all day at least 12 hours a day. I don't think an extra 12 hour should be a problem if i keep it away from my heating vents. I vacuum the PS3 vents once a month to help it breathe.

I've never any had issues with my PS3 Slim (250 GB). I keep it vertical with a stand, and it stays practically silent and only ever gets warm, never hot. Also, the vents aren't blocked by a wall or anything, so there's great airflow. I suggest you all do the same. It'll extend the life of your system.

I use a laptop fan underneath my PS3. Works just fine :D

I second that. I run a USB powered laptop fan on mine and heat readings before and after. With the PS3 running for 30 minutes of GT5, heat reading coming out the fan ports was 124.7! Placed a laptop fan under my PS3, heat readings (from the same place) was 90.4!

I ran my console wel over two months non stop from GT5 launch till february when I completed everything. It was off only once for few hours (power cut). It's old 40Gb fat model I bought with GT5P bundle. Since then It's on/off only a couple days together and then maybe a few hours off (because of rebuilding downstairs kitchen and messing with wiring.

So ... I just can't imagine, what some people do with their consoles to brake them.

my slim is often on for 3-4 days at a time and it never gets too hot to touch... i leave it out in the open so it gets the best possible ventilation.

As I said earlier, most PS3s work, so testimonies of peoples machines working to extremes may not be unusual. It is some machines dying relatively easy are interesting. ;)

I hope you are all backing up your game saves, regardless of whether you've had trouble or not, aren't you?

I backed up my game saves a few days before my first PS3 died, so didn't lose that much, but the second one died while backing up so I don't know whether that was successful. :nervous: At most I've lost about two weeks of GT5 progress. How much would you lose if your machine died right now? ;)

I don't see why that would be a problem.
Normal pc's can run for years after each other, so why not a PS3? I once accidently put the PS3 in some kind of mode where the fans do 100%.. They blow so hard, I cannot see the PS3 getting too hot..

I got an 80GB Fat, and it never got hot, or any other problem.. It works just fine..

Put your PS3 in a cool place, and it should be fine. You can also buy a cooling fan (see here) for an example.

Of course that fan is nonsense. Sony should redo their homework ff the console dies because of heat in normal conditions (0-40deg Celsius)..

What? Played MGS4 for 3 to 4 hours? Thats only like three minutes of real time gameplay!

Seriously. I think that pit saves, plus the well knowned mid-championship saves would be welcomed. Not all of us can afford to leave the PS3 burning for a couple of days, then the thing going YLoD, and saying: "oh well, let me buy a new one right away."

Yes, I know that some say that saving in mid race would be "unrealistic," but if you want to make it realistic, then don´t save. Plus, I highly doubt that ANYONE has done a 24 hour endurance without pausing the game just once...

About the heating: I live in El Salvador, and temperatures are reaching as far as 86 Farenheit in this summer days, in my room. I´ve got to say that my old 40 gig PS3 has been running perfectly since late 2007. GT5 in my opinion, doesn´t really put the PS3 to its limits. There are alot of games that make the PS3 go in "vaccum cleaner mode" after a few minutes of playing, in lets say... around 82 and 88 degrees. Games like MGS4, GTA4, NFS Shift, and a few others. I have got to say that since I got GT5 on December of last year, my PS3 has only gone in "vaccum cleaner mode" like two times after playing GT5 for around 2 to 3 hours. So I can asume that GT5 does not take it hard on the PS3 as we thought.

Never the less, I´ve been keeping 1-3 hour game sessions since I got my PS3, I turn it off whenever I´m not playing and I feel thats the correct way to take care of your console. I, myself wouldn´t risk my PS3 by keeping it on like a pc. I cannot afford a new one...
