Some?

Which models are you claiming are affected by the 2.70 update and where did you get that information?

As Scaff already mentioned there are millions of each model of PS3... if there was really a problem with this or any update most of us would know about it.

There are over 20 million PS3s... even if just 1% experienced some kind of problem that would account for over 200,000 PS3s... if 99% are not having a problem then I seriously doubt it has anything to to do with the update, but rather the reasonable odds that a small fraction of any consumer electronic device is going to experience a problem.
Yesterday, I was reading a PS3 forum that alot of people had some bugs during the update. I will find it again.

To be honest you will read the exact same thing on forums after every update (and you can also apply the same to 360 updates as well).

Doesn't make it the cause, simply because a few (in terms of overall units in the market) fail at the same time as an update. It makes it a coincidence.

The message that says about re-building the database is not really an issue.

I had it after playing the Killzone 2 demo, and apparently it is like the PS3 defragging the hard drive (source - Sony forums and various other forums)

After I completed it on my PS3, it continues to work with no problems (fingers crossed :dopey:)

Hope that helps in some way

Similarly I have on occasion heard of PC OS updates coinciding with hardware issues. Of course, being Windows, these may be more due to it trying to reconnect all of its resource hogging drivers and whatnot.

My best guess is that in these cases there is an underlying physical problem and a firmware/OS update somehow causes it to become apparent.

But it does amaze me how many people will blame a firmware update for killing their Blu-Ray laser.

PJ-FFL, did the hard reset help?

There is a menu to rebuild your database and reinstall the firmware.

It will allow you to reset back to the factory settings. I suggest backing up your hard drive first though.

http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/2265/ps3_how_to_factory_hard_reset/

That's good info to know... but where do you find this menu?

I looked through the official system software manual as well as the official PS3 Knowledge Center and so far I can't seem to find any reference to this "full format" menu referred to in that tech tip link.

There isn't even a mention about it in the instructions and explanations about the initial setup procedure.

The closest related topic I could find was:
But this refers to the Format Utility, which will not defrag the drive, but rather will reformat it. Thus deleting everything off it, which I suppose will in effect defrag it as long as you use the Backup Utility to copy all the data from the HDD to an external drive and then restore the data after reformatting the drive.

The other thing that I'm not sure I understand about how to do a hard reset as discussed in that link you posted, is that it mentioned three beeps?

I have used a similar procedure (power switch off -> power switch on - > hold down power button until it beeps) in cases where I have taken the PS3 to someone's house and they don't have a display with HDMI. All this does is reset the Video Output Settings back to the standard settings.

So if I understand correctly, if I were to continue to keep my finger on the power button, I would hear two additional beeps?

Are there other power button reset options besides those two?

One more thing, unless I'm mistaken, by simply selecting the Restore Default Settings, it will do the same thing as powering down the PS3 and then keeping your finger on the power button until you hear 3 beeps... as it too will restore all the default settings and take you back through the intial setup procedure.

I've always wondered if there was a way to defrag the internal hard drive without having to backup all the data and reformat it, but I have also heard speculation that the PS3 will defrag automatically, but I have no confirmation of this. Do you have links to those sources you mentioned (Sony forums and various other forums) that confirm that the rebuilding of the data base is the way to defrag a PS3's drive?

I think Pako's suggestion still applies, you said you are using the composite cables that came with the system? have you tried another set? (any ps1 or ps2 cable that hooks into the a/v multi connector will work on the ps3)

You had to make me dig all the way back to October, didn't you? I first saw this on Joystiq, and then later UnoMOTO found it by luck and used it when he had some sort of system crash.

Here's the Joystiq report, with a picture:

Firmware 2.50 adds hidden recovery menu

recovery425ps3.jpg

It appears that firmware 2.50 also added one other feature, meant to help PS3 owners that are trying to troubleshoot their system. A recovery menu (pictured above) gives users access to a variety of restore features. It will even allow users to install a new firmware update, should anything go wrong during the installation process. To access the menu, you must hold down the power button to turn on the PS3 until you hear three beeps. Then the menu will show up.

There are a few reports of systems bricking after firmware updates, so this may be Sony's attempt at creating a fix for future problems. Hopefully, we'll never have to actually use this feature -- but if we do, it may be a quick way of avoiding a trip to the post office to send the PS3 to Sony's support center.

I have previously mentioned it here and a few posts later you even linked the Wiki page listing what was added in 2.5. There was also a very short-lived thread on it.

It isn't that the info hasn't been out there for a while, you just missed it. And with as detail attentive as you are, that scares me. You feeling alright?

Thanks for that. I will give that a shot tonight for my problems. Funny, all three times that I was on the phone with Sony for over an hour each time, they never mentioned that screen...

shhh! it's a SECRET!!!

Thanks! Very cool! 👍

D'oh! :dunce:

Not sure how I missed those posts, but to my defense, there were so many added features with 2.50 I apparently overlooked that one. :indiff:

As a matter of fact I'm not... (although that's no excuse), I'm afraid I picked up a nasty cold from the kids early this week and it's still hangin' on a bit... although my wife thinks I'm just trying to use it as a way to excuse myself from this evenings festivities. ;)

Honestly, you would think it is. It wasn't listed in any official way, and I am honestly curious as to who it is at Joystiq (or their source) that thought to just hold down the power button for a bit after doing the update.

I think I only paid attention to it because my warranty had run out in June, then 2.4 really caused some issues, and so by the time 2.5 came around I was working on my disaster recovery plan (saving for an external HDD). So, in my current semi-paranoid state this jumped out at me as a blessed news.

Kids and germs. Makes me wonder why my wife wants a germ farm like that.

Thanks for the links Super_Spig! 👍

It is bizarre. There is no mention or explanation about this feature in the manual or Sony's support site. :odd:

In fact, even the Wiki listing that I posted earlier that lists the known added features for each update doesn't mention it either. :odd:

So this then begs the question, what do each of those options specifically do?

But before anyone answers... let's move this discussion to the appropriate thread that FK was kind enough to dig up:

I have started getting "disc read error" messages - the game generally runs for a few minutes before it "freezes" (40 GB PS3 purchased in Nov 2007). I'm assuming that it is probably a problem with the laser. Any suggestions as to what I might try, short of sending it back to Sony for (non-warrantee) repair? :(

Hey guys .... I have a problem with my PS3 that hasn't been addressed here as far as I can tell. I don't know how to insert a photo into this post itself so I've created an "album" that shows various aspects of this unique problem. I have a display issue, but only with firmware images such as game icons, friends list avatars, text message screen etc. They are all stretched diagonally. Without going into too much detail here, could some of the more knowlegeable guys check out the album and let me know if you've seen anything like this before.

The PS3 is one of the original 60Gb, backward compatible versions purchased in 02/07

UPDATE: Performing the "Restore PS3" function (formatting the HDD) did not fix the problem, although it set it back to the point that the problem first showed itself, whereby only the menu icons were distorted in the in-game XMB menu. It took 2 weeks for the rest of the items to degrade themselves to the point that they are in the album pictures. It's going back to Sony as soon as their special shipping box arrives. FYI .... it does set the unit back to the way it was when you first plug it in for the first time :)

Hi fellow gamers,
My PS3 60GB has just started to doing something strange also.

My GTP PNS tag no longer shows any of my friends as being online nor does it display the last time that they had logged on.

However my normal PNS tag is displaying as it should.

Does anyone have a similar problem?
Thank you.

I had this issue, and after FOUR calls to Sony and them not being able to help, I backed up my game saves and did a console reset. (hold down power button until it beeps three times) Make sure you back up what you want to keep to another drive, because it will erase everything. That fixed the problem for me.

Edit: Lots of people have had this problem, and although Sony won't admit it, I think it is a growing issue with their last software update.

@ R1600Turbo

Thanks for that mate - I did not really want to format my hard drive as i'm trying to hold on to the 35odd F2007's just incase GT5 lets us transfer cars/money.

Will try it as a last resort - cheers.

Gday guys, seems like im having the disc read error aswell :(
It started the day before the update so it cant be that, but im just getting the loading disc circle graphic thingy and it never actually reads the disc. I tried everything right up to a full reset and nothing works.
Looks like mine is going back to Sony - and I only just got this one a couple of months ago as my original fried its graphics card!

GTP_joeninety try this, change your comment. After looking through the official forums it seems people have had similar problems that were fixed after they changed their comment. While I couldn't find someone with your exact problem ( you still have your friends showing and they didn't ) it might be the same bug, so the solution might be the same.

The pattern with my PS3 at the minute seems to be that it will play OK for a while (20-30 mins) before it freezes.

Well done Ash you were exactly right !👍

For anybody else experiencing this problem just change the comment on your avatar and your back in the game - yehaaa!

@korza493 - I got the F1's by playing GT5P everyday since it came out in New Zealand - easy money.
hope to see you on track some day

well it may not be untill christmas this year until i might get PS3.

Just like to update on my PS3 problem. I finally broke down & sent my PS3 off for (out-of-warranty) repair (presumably laser reading problem). Not thrilled that I had to spend $196 CDN (incl. tax) to repair it & that it only comes with a 90 day warranty. That's compared to the $399 (+ tax) I paid for it new - it came with a free Spiderman 3 Blu Ray, coupon for 5 other Blu Ray movies, Rachet & Clan, TOD, a free HDMI cable AND a 1 year warranty. THAT was a good deal, the $196 & 90 day warranty doesn't seem like such a good deal, especially if it breaks down again in a few months. :indiff:

On the positive side, the repair service was startlingly fast:

Just had my PS3 returned by courier. Sent it out on Friday, June 5th (went to local repair facility in Whitby, Ontario - about 180 kms from here). Returned to me at 1.00 PM Wednesday, June 10th - that would be 3 business days. Quite impressive! 👍

The repair turn around time IS quite impressive I must say!

Hope you get some good use out of it before it has issues. I'm a firm believer in Best Buy's extended exchange warranty as it usually lends itself to an updated unit as well as another 24 mo. warranty plan should I buy another one. Not to mention they pay you money if the replacement unit costs less than the original purchases.

I always considered BB (& other retailers') warranty schemes a bit of a scam, to be honest. As you know most products break down in the first few weeks, if they are going to break down at all. However, in the case of something relatively complex & "fragile", like the PS3, it might make good sense.

I do consider I've had good use of my PS3, & don't object too much to having to repair it, but I feel the flat charge is too high - it should be possible to take it to a local, licensed repair store & pay c. $ 75 -100 to have (what is probably) a relatively straightforward & inexpensive repair. What is really disturbing, is that having paid that high amount, the work is only warranted for 90 days. If there is another problem with the PS3 a few months after the warranty expires, the repair cost will seem like a very bad investment.

Ok, major bump, but I have some questions. I was playing MW2 and I quit the game. I ejected the disc before the XMB had popped back up and it froze, so I turned the system off and the rebuild database menu showed up and I clicked ok. It's been sitting here at 0 for 30+ minutes. Does it take that long or did it freeze? The background is still moving and the powersave still works (the screen just darkened) but it's just sitting at 0%. Is it ok to turn it off and restart it?
