I turned on my PS3 today only to be greeted with a red screen telling me in various languages that "A serious problem has occurred. Please call technical support for help."
Or something along those lines.
I turned off the PS3, turned it back on, and it was fine.
WTF?

Backup you gamesaves if you haven't already!

That same thing happened to me.

I found out that it was a fan failure but when I realised, it was too late and my PS3 got the YLOD.

OK, it's back.
This time restarting it isn't working.

I can't find anything on YouTube thats of much help.

Gamestop won't accept it.

And I'm NOT losing my PS3 for a month an a half and pay a hundred bucks to go with it.

What do I do?!?!?!?!?

Can you guys help at all?

Try unplugging it and re plugging it in. is your ps3 ventilated? And Did you even call tech support?

Yes, they were no help at all.
Just, send in for a $100 and we'll have it fixed for you in 4-6 weeks.
I've vacuumed it out.
Reset the laser.
Took out the hard drive then put it back in.
Turned off power, back on.
All to no avail.
Heat is not the issue I don't think.
It's in a pretty open area...

Without sending it for repair you probably have a big paper weight. Sounds like buy a new 1 or get the old one fixed. I sent mine to sony they said 4 to 6 weeks only took them 2 weeks though.

OK, I've gotten into the recovery menu.
I chose option 3: Restore file system.
After it's done it's thing, I get a message saying "The hard disk's file system is corrupted and will be restored."
I hit OK, the only option given.
So it takes about sixty seconds to restore.
Finishes, restarts automatically. Red screen comes up at start up as usual.
So I shut off the ps3, go back into the recovery menu, choose option three again and I get the same thing.
I keep repeating, as from the sounds of it on google, most people have kept repeating this and eventually it worked.
We'll see...

I would be trying a different hdd by the sound of it.

If I were to wipe this one, do you guys think that would help?
Can I make a back up of this hard drive?

And most likely a VERY stupid question but, what would happen if I were to pop the hard drive from the PS3 into my PC?
Could I make a back up of it that way?

You did back your saves up right? My PS3 kicked the bucket, so it looks like no GTE filming for a little. Should we warn Leo about the curse?

I have a backup from two or three weeks ago.

HDD in the freezer for 10 mins, heard it helps with restoring files. But you'd need to be able to load the PS3 again to get them, unless you can connect to a PC.

No way I'll be able to get to the XMB unless I can fix the issue all together, so that won't help.
I'll look for a cord from staples or Walmart or some place like that to make a back up.

I'm having the same problem with the red screen. It started like this: some 3 or 4 weeks ago I put a USB drive into the PS3, and then turned it on, but I got the red screen. I tried turning it off and on like 3 times, but same result, so I turned it off, took the USB drive out and turned the PS3 on, and it worked fine. So yes, I think that the USB drive had some kind of virus, and that it is the cause of the problem.

Since then I get the red screen almost once a week, and everytime I have to re-install the GT5 DLC from the play station store.
Will the option "Restore PS3 system" help me?
It's the first time I have trouble with the PS3 (a 80GB fatty).
Any help is appreciated 👍
