PS3 running for 7 days!!!

I had my PS3 for about 12 hours straight and it was quite hot.
I changed the video output to 720p and i realize that it goes way less hotter that the 1080p setting.
And i think that's because the FPS are locked at 60
What do you think
 
Anyone know anything on the slim ps3's?

mine gets devastatingly hot, and I could probably get a sizzle if I were to get a drop of water on my Hdmi cable..

Do Slims get YOLD?
And if so, because they seem hotter, would that mean they may get it faster?
 
My old ps3 i got when it first came out and ran atleast 12 hours a day give or take before she YLOD:guilty: and that was in feburary, the vents were covered in dust for most of its life and no back up fan

My new ps3 is out in the open clean the vents offten with a laptop fan under it runnin of a usb

All the YLOD is the CPU's thermal compound wears off and melts and dosnt allow the CPU work under the amout of heat the ps3 produces


so i guess buyin a system is just like finding a dimond in the rut so to speak

OK So I just got back from our X'mas holliday with my family. Before I left my house I was grinding B-Spec, Since I was just about to lv. Just before we left I remember turning off my PS3. I didn't realize it was still on it shows tht I just pressed the home button without shutting it completely. So I got home and went to my room hearing my PS3 fan was running soo loud thinking tht it would get the YLOD, But I was impressed it was still running. It's a bit hot but thn I turned it off for a few days to see if it will go back to normal and it did. It is running fine nothing wrong with it at all. I thought it will get the YLOD but it didn't. I was glad to see it running fine it's also the old fat PS3 60Gig. I had it for 2 n half years now. Never had a problem with it yet hopin never. Im really lucky to have one of the best PS3's.

My PS3 is always on, running GT5 or Folding when im not home (not high enough b-spec for enduro races yet). Was running a 40GB Fatty, which i sold and now i have a 160GB Slim (350GB upgraded HDD) doing the same. Neither has had any issues at all :)
 
I used to leave my PS3 for about a day or two when it was still new (60GB launch unit). Folding, downloading, etc. :) Unfortunately, YLOD struck it twice.
 
Grinding Bspec 24/7 for 2 weeks now, got the old dinosaur 80G (release day PS3), I've noticed the fan come on maybe twice, quiet as a whistle and room temp cool. 👍

EDIT: Also, it's not going to do MUCH to a power bill, it's not an A/C unit people.
 
I don't know why people freak out over leaving thier ps3 on. It's just a computer in a different case. I leave my web server, work station, and domain server on 24/7 along with my stereo. Turning anything electrical off and on is worse for it than anything else. Why not leave the PS3 on? Power usage? I really don't think it consumes much sitting idle, not anymore than any other computer.
 
I exchanged the thermal compound and got a laptop cooler for my launch fatty after I got GT5 and the fan started acting up.
If you people here are anything into building computers, I'd strongly recommend to pick the PS3 apart and exchange the compound. The stuff on my fatty looked like cement, some cheap stuff and also covered 2/3 of the cell processor at most, as the GPU unit. As a bonus there are some great guides with piccies and all on how to do it 👍
 
I know someone who had this PS3 on for around a year, he used Folding@Home when he wasn't playing. It even survived a lightning, a few weeks later he got the YLOD though.

I just replaced the original heat sink compound with artic silver on my backwards compatible 60g. One of my buddies had a newer none backwards comp. fatty opened up next to mine and I was suprised to see the differences in both units. Mine was built better i.e. better components 19 blade fan, copper heat pipes instead of aluminum sinks but his was newer. I guess trying to save a dime!! His died a year ago mines still kicking over 3yrs now!

But are you in America where it is snowing and is cold or are you some where like Australia where it is 29C(84F) at 11am and gets hotter.

My room is 26C(79F) and i have an overclockd PC running full tilt to make it worse i dont have an Air conditioner.

But i am glad that your PS3 is running fine.
 
for the most parts of the PS3 its actually less consuming to run continuously for some days (even more when in idle), than turning it on every few hours. switching things on always generates a bit of a power peak which usually is the most dangerous part of a ps3 booting and running. Of course most Ps3s which fail, do it due to overheating issues, but thats mostly caused externally and not something referring to the way the ps3 (or most other computer-like things) operates.
 
I have a SLIM PS3 and it shut off on its own when doing a b-spec 9 hour endurance?! I dont get it. If it cant last through a 9 hour session then how am I supposed to beat the game? The temp in my room never gets above 65 degrees F. Its near a window that blasts in cold air and not near anything thats producing heat and well ventilated.
 
my PC at work ran for over 4 years without turning off, then we changed it (not because it failed) for a new one which is running over 14 months now, all the time.
 
i have the old fat 60 gb too, one of the ones that could get the stupid YLOD but its been running 2 weeks straight on b-spec. currently lvl 37! :) GOOOOO FATTY!

I've got a launch 20GB (with a 500GB hard drive) and I keep it running 24/7. Mostly for remote play functionality and folding.

What is this "folding" that you speak of?
Are you refering to the PS3 "Folding at Home" app?
If so, I would really like to know, what is the point of the "Folding at Home" app?
 
There's a thread around here somewhere where players have had they're PS3's running since the end of November. Apparently some models of PS3 (Or all of them) were built for this kind of punishment.

If anyone is curious, mines been on since the day after Christmas. ^_^

It has something to do with big calculations for the healthcare industry. It sends data to your PS3 system which calculates something and sends it back to some university. Combined with all the Ps3's world wide running Folding@Home it is like a super computer.

Well think about it, most people would leave their computers/laptops on for days on end and wouldn't worry about them breaking down. The ps3 is just a computer doing what it is designed to do - if anything, turning it on and off frequently would do it more damage, but from an environmental and cost point of view it is obviously a healthier option.
 
I have left mine on 3 days now two more to go no ylod and it's the height of summer here so it's not excellent cold in the house its very warm my ps3 sits on a computer table with my hd tv sitting right beside so it gets very good breathing space, my sis ylodded my old one by thinking it had a fan deck so it would be allright put on top of satellite decoder and bang it ylodded cause the fan was sucking the hot air from the decoder into the ps3 and i liked that ps3 not as much as the one i have now 320 gig slim line key to not ylodding your ps3 is not the actual temperature is making sure your ps3 is all by itself in it's area so it can breathe in all directions. Not how long you have on you didn't pay lots of money to have it off did ya

Mines been running the Le Mans 24 Hour B-Spec race for the past 3 days - but the PS3 has been on 8 or 9 days straight now. So far so good on my 2007 60gig model.

You don't really have much choice once you get to the higher B spec levels as you need to run many multiples of the same enduro to level up (I think I'm on my 5th or 6th Tsukuba 9h race, and this one will finally get me to lvl 35 and unlock Le Mans).

Not to change the subject but this is clearly one of the weak parts of the game. The fact that you need to do this to level up is absurd.
 
I think the most mine has been on is 2 weeks straight shortly after I bought it. It continuously stays on for days at a time even now. Once again, leave it well ventilated and dust free. It's fine. It's an electronic device (computer) so either staying on or staying off is better. Always turning it on and off does more harm.
 
I suppose it's good to hear that it's not fatal to leave the PS3 on fif very long periods. I'm looking at doing the same as I have the 2 24hr a-spec endurance races to do and I'm gonna have to pause in-between races to go to work/sleep etc. Only wish there was a chance of perhaps mid race game saves in a future update.
 
Ok so some people have been running it for longer periods of time than me. Doing longer races and not shutting off? Whats wrong with my setup then? Any ideas? Its a SLIM.
