I wouldn't wait about mate! I would send it off if reseting and updates dont work! Sounds more like a hardware issue to me!

And you just got it back too! Thats completely unacceptable!

How long have you had your PS3? I am just hoping the PS3 has a longer life span than the xbox360. I want to eventually get one but it would suck to find out both systems start to die after 9-12 months if played on a regular basis. That seems to be about the average life span for the 360 is 9-12 months. That is funny that they send a coffin for the PS3 also. lol Microsoft has always sent a coffin for our 360s that died. My brothers was the fastest return I have heard of. We sent it out on a monday and got it back repaired by Friday. Only 4 days.

From what I have heard the PS3 failure rate is fairly low. It is on par for occasional individual systems to have individual problems. I have yet to hear of one overly encompassing problem. This disc reading error seems to be the closest thing to a widespread issue and I have only heard of the people in this thread that have had it happen.

How long has the ps3 been out? I know it took over a year before the 360's starting having major problems. Then it was just one after another over and over again still to this day. I love the games for the 360 and the online is incredible but holy crap the console itself is extremely unreliable and unstable. I just dont want the same thing to start happening with the PS3. Thats why I am waiting until next year 2009 before I think of getting a PS3. I really want a blue ray player but I want a good one. Not sure how good the PS3 blue ray player is compared to others.

PS3 came out in November 2006 in the US/JPN and in March 2007 for the rest of the world.

PS3 is probably the best blu-ray player on the market, mainly because it is updatable, so if new blu-ray features come out then new PS3 FW will add those features.

As said above, PS3 failure rate is very low (approx 1%), and industry standard failure rate for all consumer electronics is approx 3%.

XBOX 360 on the other hand had failure rates of up to 33% at its peak!

Dang already out for 2 years? Time flies by and that is great news about the PS3 only having approx 1% failure rate. I am pretty sure I will be getting a PS3 in 2009 for sure. Especially for the blue ray player. Thats the main reason I want one.
I am pretty sure the failure rate has to be much higher for the 360 than 33%.

How long has the ps3 been out?
One and a half years.

I know it took over a year before the 360's starting having major problems. Then it was just one after another over and over again still to this day.
Unfortunately, the high failure rate of 360's was being reported as early as six months after they were released. It's only that they had fewer sold back then (3.5 million units), thus a 30% failure rate would mean about one million consoles experiencing the RRoD. Where as today that number would have grown to over 5 million... Thus giving a greater opportunity to be more aware of those with problems.

So far, the highest failure rate estimates for the PS3 from 3rd party analysts is 3%. However, even such a small failure rate can appear more significant due to the millions of PS3's that have been sold. For instance, 3% of the current install base of PS3 is 400,000 units... while that's a lot fewer consoles having problems than 5 million, and represents a very small percentage, it's still plenty large enough where it's perfectly understandable why you'll see reports and complaints about PS3s having problems... especially when you consider that when someone has a problem they are far more likely to be vocal about it, then if they are not having any problems.

Fortunately though, it appears over 95% of PS3 owners are happy campers.

If that's the only thing holding you back then you should feel overwhelmingly confident in being able to get one any time you like. After all, as an industry average for electronic goods, having a failure rate below 10% is pretty good, and below 5% is superb.

I really want a blue ray player but I want a good one. Not sure how good the PS3 blue ray player is compared to others.
If you do a Google search on Blu-ray comparisons, and or look at the many shootout threads on A/V Forums sites like AVSforum and HomeTheaterForum, you'll quickly discover that for the last year and a half, the PS3 has consistently outperformed most other Blu-ray players, including many that were selling for twice the price of the PS3.

As a testament to the quality of the Blu-ray player in the PS3, many hardcore videophiles who could care less about video games, have bought and are using PS3's in their +$100,000 dedicated home theaters. Yes, it's that good. 👍

Now to be fare, after well over a year, some standalone Blu-ray players are finally starting to give the PS3 a run for it’s money in terms of value and some additional features… but then they fall well short in terms of everything else the PS3 can do, like all it’s multi-media management and playback functions, web browsing (all though Adobe seriously needs to come up with a version 9 update for the PS3) email, video/voice conferencing, among many other features… oh, and play some pretty fun games too. :)

Regardless of all that, if the only thing that is holding you up on getting a PS3 is reliability, then you should be far more concerned over your next computer, mobile phone, and even toaster over purchase, as the PS3 still has one of the best reliability ratings among consumer electronic devices.

BTW: If you get a chance, you may find this an interesting read:

Thanks for the reply. Thats a lot of great information about the PS3. I am going to have to start lurking in the PS3 forums more often because I know I will be getting one eventually. 👍

I for one am looking forward to your PS3 experience... as I have always admired your enthusiasm for games, and the excellent screenshots and photos you have taken in Forza 2 and PGR4, and would love to see what kind of photos/screen grabs you are able to take with some of the PS3 games as well. 👍

BTW: Despite no photomode, I am quite impressed with some of the screen grabs from GT5P that people have been sharing:
I have no doubt with your eye for composition as seen in your Forza 2 & PGR4 shots, you would be able to come up with some amazing screen shots from GT5p. 👍

Hope you get a fully working/fault free system this time mate!

Hope you gave them hell about it and got some compensation like a free headset/controller/game!

Thanks for all the kind words Digital. :) I was at Blockbuster yesterday and they had the Blue ray display playing thru the PS3 and holy crap it was beautiful!! Especially the Cars movie. I just sat and staired at it for about 15 minutes. I want that Blue Ray player so bad so I can truly appreciate movies on my HDTV. Who knows maybe I will get a PS3 before 2009. (cough early christmas present.) :sly:

Mine went tonight, 60GB model, after reading whats happened here, and doing what what was mentioned to me on the phone, looks like I'll be having my own "open casket" soon enough

I'm stunned that two have gone at the same time. I'm worried about my own launch 60Gb one now...

Called the playstation tech, did what he suggested, no go :(

Have to call 'em back now and get them to send me a box

This is the first time Ive ever had a drama with a playstation, PSone, PS2 or 3

Mine went a couple of months ago, 60GB, i thought i was in for a nightmare but they replaced it within 5days of my phonecall so i was chuffed. Plus i have had no problems at all with the new one they sent. I have a feeling the PS2 games dont look as good, but i think im being paranoid, although i know there are 2 methods the PS3 uses to play them so i could be right. I'm just happy they sent me a new one so fast, hats off to them.

Are there any warning signs before these PS3's start to die?? Is it just the 60 gb with the problems?
Most of the time with the 360 it will start freezing day after day then eventually the 3 RROD.

There were signs with mine but im not sure if it's a universal indicator. Basically, it started with a game stuttering alot during play, and then the game would freeze during intros, then eventually it just stopped reading discs. This was all in the space of about 1/2 hour. I wonder if this is how it happened for anyone else.

Mine froze in the middle of a race (was playing Pro street), switched it off. Turned it on again the next night to play CoD4, nothing at all :(

Right I had the same problem as everybody else with my 60gb PS3, which I purchased on the release day in the Uk, Could not load/read disks, Ps3 Games,Blu-ray,Dvd's or downloaded games. I phoned Sony or were more than happy to do a 24hr changeover for a re-manufactured console, I prepared the console for the swap by transferring my game saves/data, music e.t.c, but decided to do a 'Restore PS3' which took approx 3.5 hrs which I assume takes it completley back to it's factory conditions.

This has worked perfectly it is just like new, I now have a problem do I keep my one in the hope this does not happen again? Or do I replace it with a re-manufactured product (basically new console)?

This has cost me 2-days of gaming time and emotional pain & about 6hrs of my life in all (phone calls, testing games,dvd's,Cd's,Blu-rays) can't get back, with the fact I have to re-sign up to the Playstation network, replacing everything the restore has reset, but I am a little pleased that potentially a restore could be the answer to this problem.

What do you think? I have to make a decision today as the console swap over is scheduled for Monday, I would need to cancel it today?

Personally I would keep it, because the fact you sorted it by doing a restore means that it was a software issue and not a hardware issue!

I would only swap a console if it was a hardware issue, because a software issue can happen on anything.

If you bought a new PC and it crashed you wouldn't take it back would you? You would just reboot it and then start again.

Its your call tho. Reason I say keep it is that the other one might have broken due to something more serious, or it might simply have been returned for the same reason as yours, then when Sony reformatted and saw it worked they would simply test it for a few hours, maybe even a couple of days, then if it kept working they would use it as a replacement console.

If you cancel it and it messes up again you can always call them up and ask for another replacement.

Just got an E-mail from Sony, they sent it last night. Should be here by monday when I am coming back from Puerto Rico.

Is it just me or does it seem like the majority are EU 60GB units?

Was there any significant difference between them and NA/JP units?

An idea I had was what is your pattern for on/off?

So let me ask a few questions, anyone can answer:

Do you turn your PS3 off/into standby after using it? or do you leave it running?

How often does it get turned on and off?

How long does it usually stay off for? and how long does it usually stay on for?

1. I leave it running F@H when I'm not using it, I'll give it a half days break about every 10-12 days.

2. For me, I turn it off for half a day every 10-12 days, I also wipe it with a soft cloth atleast every 2 days.

3a. Half a day.
3b. 10-12 days.

So, let me see your answers!

Also, I have the NTSC 80GB, CHE927, manufactured on the 17th of April, 2007.

From,
Chris.

I run F@H and it only gets turned off if something causea freeze or the Internet connection needs to be reset.

It is one of the last 60GB before they dropped the price and announced the 80GB (bought slightly less than one year ago today - my birthday gift).

So it sounds like when I buy a new one I should be fine? These problems are just mainly with launch PS3 consoles?
