Well today is a sad day, my PS3 has stopped reading all sorts of discs (just after I get my g25 of course :grumpy:). Is there any home solution to this problem or is the only way to fix it to send it to sony?

I think that ones a "call sony" im afraid, a lot of member have had that happen to them here, the only other thing you could try is a full system restore (takes like hours and hours) but it usually doesnt solve the problem...

Im getting scared now that this is happening to a lot of people... so far finger crossed my 60GB has been ok.

What I'm worried about is people who worry about their PS3 breaking so much they turn it off/on constantly afraid it's going to overheat.

I leave my PS3 on 24/7, running F@H or Gaming, and I've never had any issue with it, although people who turn it off and then turn it on when they wanna play, their consoles break, from what I've seen.

Maybe the PS3 was meant to be on for long periods of time?

From,
Chris.

I leave mine on standby mode when I'm not using it and I had a similar problem as wrcsti. The one thing I wouldn't worry about though is the PS3 overheating, it seems to have a great cooling system on it.

I wonder what the issue is because I am seeing an increased number of them and it's sort of worrying. As I've said in other threads, I would expect the PS3 to have great reliability.

Which PS3 do you have, 40GB 60GB or 80GB

I keep hearing about these failures and I want to know if mine is next. It's in awful shape, the shiny finish has battle scars and it's full of dust.

Exact same problem I had with my 40GB (well, I say "my" but my brother uses it). It stopped reading any disc. This happend after installing the latest firmware though I think this may have been coincidental.
I got it in December last year and when I told Sony after some quite painless chat (with a rep based in the UK) they said they would replace it with a new console the following day. And indeed next day it turns up and works fine. Which was nice.
I wish everyone could receive that kind of service.

I reckon that this problem can occur if the firmware update has been corrupted or the wrong one has been installed which is maybe why the system can't read discs, the safest way to get firmware updates is off the net and put them onto a stick and do it that way.

I keep forgetting you can do that, I will do it that way in the future though since it might have been my problem. I figured there was probably some sort of user error when mine died because I just couldn't see the thing dying on me for no reason.

That's odd, mine had some sort of problem while installing 2.35 and it exited like halfway through the update. Maybe thats the problem here.

See Ive done it through the net ever since I got the console (it seems faster and more reliable that way plus my computer is on a lot more of the time) I have have never had any problems or had updates act strangely like exit or fail halfway through.... maybe the net is the safest choice but YOU HAVE TO MAKE SURE YOU GET THE UPDATE THATS RIGHT FOR YOU CONSOLES REGION!

Just got an e-mail from SCEA, they sent the box for me to send it in. Should be about a week of no ps3ness. :(

Just to add that the 40GB that had to be replaced had its firmware update via the internet automatically. Turned it on, logged on and message comes up saying an update is ready. I still think it was coincidental. However I have heard of firmware upgrades occassionally "bricking" consoles. It happens every so often on the PS3 and 360.
Maybe that's why Sony were so quick to replace my PS3, though I did not mention the Firmware upgrade at all.

I thought this had happened to me this past weekend. My wife and I were trying to watch a Blu-Ray movie and when it would go to load the menu the screen would just turn black and it sat there. After rebooting the system and exiting to the XMB it still wouldn't work.

I was starting to freak out because I knew I had lost my receipt and wasn't sure if I would need it for a warranty replacement.

I tried one last thing and ejected the disc to look at it. There was a big greasy thumb print on the side. That's when it occurred to me that perhaps handling discs while in the middle of eating a Whopper was a bad idea. I cleaned the disc and it worked fine.

Let this be a lesson; hamburger grease makes it hard to read a disc.

Little consolation to those with an actual problem, but I was about to freak out.

So, for everyone that has had this problem, has it always been after a firmware update? If so I may go to the effort of backing up my drive and installing all updates from a thumb drive.

Mine wasn't after an update as far as I can remember.

Mine wasn't either. I was playing CoD4 (as usual) and many (but not all) of the gun sounds were not there. Voice chat was there perfectly though. I told the guys I would restart my PS3 and when I started the game up again I got this. The box should be here this week.

Got the box. Sending it later today.
Why must the good die young?

Open casket funeral.

On a side note, Sony sent everything needed to send it back including Next day air, bag to put around it, instructions on what to send, paper to attach your proof of purchase and write some info on and lastly a piece of tape to close it with.

EDIT:
Box was just picked up by UPS.

Good you got a box. When my 360 died I had to supply my own box.
Still don't know why I had a replacement delivered the next day. Was it because my PS3 was just 6 months old?
Hope it gets sorted soon.

It's because you live in the UK. Sony UK will replace your console at your door within a couple of days, always have done, since the old PSX days, no messing around sending it off like with Sony America or Microsoft.

Yeah the UK seems to do well with Playstation Service.... maybe its because the they have to give a better impression with the console costing so much more than anywhere else in the world! :sly:

Just got my replacement in the mail, GT5P Time!! *thinks he can dance real good but sucks, yet still dances on while talking in his 3rd person.*

That was pretty quick, glad to see it worked out.

Well now that I got it back a new problem has arrised, It will read the disc but not load it. On the first loading screen of the game. Just my luck Ive tryed the quick format the HDD and arestore system settings but neither worked.

Looks like another call to Sony is due! This time give them hell about it and demand some compensation (not sure about Sony UK, but Microsoft UK will give you freebies if you have a situation like yours such as free controllers, wireless headsets, 1 month LIVE or even a free game!).

Have you updated it to the latest firmware first?

First thing I did, The problem right now is not always occurring. Hopefully the next update is released soon enough to fix this issue, if not then back to texas for this fellar.
