Was there any significant difference between them and NA/JP units?

The US/JPN launch machines have PS2 hardware in them (Emotion Engine & Graphics Synthesiser) to play PS2 games, where as EU machines (they only launched the 60GB one) use software emulation, so theoretically the EU machines should be less likely to break because there is less stuff to go wrong with it and less heat is produced due to the fact that it has power hungry processors than the US/JPN launch PS3's.

The 80GB PS3 also uses emulation, and as for the 40GB PS3.....well that just doesn't play PS2 games! But I have heard it is still able to play PS1 games! I cant try it because I have a 60GB machine, so if anyone has a 40GB machine and have a PS1 game lying around, put it in and let us know if it works.

So it sounds like when I buy a new one I should be fine? These problems are just mainly with launch PS3 consoles?

Dont worry about it! The PS3 STILL has a very low failure rate! Industry standard failure rates for ALL consumer electronics is 2 - 3%, and the PS3 is even less than that!

Its NOTHING like the XBOX 360 which at its peak had about a 33% failure rate! 10 times industry standard!

As it is obviously a different batch of 60GB units for EU I wonder if they didn't get a small bunch (as in more than there were when the US and JP consoles were being made) of faulty lasers mixed in.

That is the only connection I can see so far, and even then it isn't solid. There are some US consoles that have had the issue.

Oh, and yes the 40GB plays PS1 games. Playing PS1 games, even on disc, is a big cool point of the Remote Play feature.

Packed mine off today, knowing what the post is like here, I'll get my replacement 60GB unit in 3 months...

My launch 60GB (EU) still works fine. It was a 40GB model that I got in December that went wrong. I don't think there's any particular reason why some go wrong and some don't, at least concerning their launch date.

The earlier they were made the better they are... its always been a trait with playstations... as costs get cut things get removed or changed.

I see what you mean, as in they will use cheaper parts, etc. But as hardware is revised to make it cheaper they also try to make it more reliable by using new CPU's & GPU's (such as 65nm instead of 90nm) to reduce heat, etc which in turn actually makes the console more reliable.

The biggest weak point iv seen in all the Playstations, and even the XBOX 360 is the lasers! They all die way to soon because they're built to a budget.

Oh yes in the sense that using more efficient parts will improve reliability it is true but you have weigh it up, as you agreed, with what sony have cut back on.

Just got it back. This one seems to work so far.
EDIT:
Nope, same shiznitz as before. someone in the Sony line is getting bit in the &$# by me now.

Hope this can help some people.

My 40g ps3 has just lost it's uses as well. For about a month now i've been having some issues with the occasional freeze while playing games. About a week ago I was playing COD4 with some friends online and it froze 3 times in one night, that's when I started getting worried. My primary worry was that of course, I couldn't find my receipt for the warrenty. Then the other night it froze on GTA4 and when I restarted it, no more reading disks of any kind. That's when my gut really dropped and I had no other choice but to hit the Early Times whiskey. I thought I was done not having a receipt. :nervous:

I frantically searched the next day for the receipt and realised what happened to it. For some odd/stupid reason I had a whole stack of receipts under the bathroom sink in the cabinet. Well one night I left the water running, yada yada yada, two hours later my bathroom was flooded and everything in that cabinet was ruined and pitched.

So I called the SCEA customer support line, they told me to do the normal restore stuff which I already did and they said I would have to send the unit in to get serviced or replaced. Of course they need the date on the receipt and then need me to send them the receipt in with my unit. :ouch:

Here's what I did.

1. I now had to call the Gamestop support line acting as my cousin, he's the one who originally bought it. They said they could send sony the proof of purchase via fax or something, but they needed a service request number from sony.

2. I called back sony, gave them an approxomite date of purchase and told them gamestop would send them my purchase information. The lady then gave me a service request number. Something like this 1-1-123-123-12

3. I called Gamestop once again, gave them the service request number and woola... They said it would take 3-5 days for sony to get the information and all should be well.

Before doing all this I did some research on what other people did and some said it took some arguing with gamestop, threatening to call the attorney general and about 8 hours on the phone and they got it worked out. It took me 30 minutes tops and I had no problems, I was also very pleased with both support lines.

Some things you may need, all of which are no brainers
1. Name
2. Number
3. Address
4. Email address
5. Serial number and Model number of your ps3, for ex CECHG01, CECHE01
6. Date of Purchase
7. Be polite, it worked well for me. :)

Oh and I usually shut mine off after i'm finished with the game, usually runs for a couple hours every day. Sometimes i leaving running for a day or so though. It was purchased in January of 2008, CECHGO1 model.
