ok so my PS3 just YLODed.. i copied the Gran Turismo data right before it froze so my cars are safe (phew!!!) but just how toast is the PS3? can it be fixed or is it screwed?

Can be fixed, you'll need a heat gun, thermal paste and security torx (size 8 if i remember) - I had the ylod problem, fix worked flawlessly for me in one attempt and thankfully has lasted a good 8months or so now and still operating fine. However, most ylod fixes are only temporary (3-6 months or less). I used this video tutorial to fix it:

Gilksy YLOD Fix

Hope it helps

thanks for the help lol.. but i copied one save onto the flash drive without deleting an earlier backup.. the one will overwrite the other correct? it wont mess it up right? theyre the same account so it would actually be a good thing

Thanks. So, when that light goes on, it means the entire PS3 is toast?? Why would Sony make a special light just to signify when the unit breaks?

Maybe thats just in general for when something is wrong

I fixed mine using the heat gun method. Just make sure you get close, like around one inch from the chips/board when you do it. I had to do mine 3 times before it worked again. The first two times I didn't get close enough. Went out and bought a slim today... :)

There is no YELLOW light on the PS3 , it is the Green and Red lights flashing rapidly that gives the impression of a Yellow light (more Orange than Yellow imo). Hence YLOD.

If you are going to attempt a fix then there are many things to ensure to do right, 1 which is not mentioned much is once the board is ready to be re-assembled make sure the heatsink (this is the part which encases the fan and has copper tubes leading to 2 squares of which the clamps fix to from the opposite side.Make sure this is parallel with the steel board casing when fixed,it is better to fix the steel board casing to the heatsink before placing in the board) If you look along the casing and you see the 2 heatsink squares are not parallel then use a thin knife or something to just ease them very gently up until they are .. By doing this you ensure a very tight and hopefully a 100% contact of the heatsinks to the chips thus keeping them cool)Make sure the heatsink is not now in contact with the fan, spin the fan to check, adjust accordingly if needed. Once re-assembled if it still has YLOD double check all connections etc as YLOD is not always board failure.

Here's a question, IF I get YLOD is there a way of trasfering my PSN accounts over to a new PS3? Or would I have to make a new account?

On a new or other PS3 simply make an account and use your existing email address for your PSN account .. I have 3 PS3's now and i have my account(s) on them all, but you can only go online with 1 at a time.

i had this and the light appears to be yellow but is a combination of both, it will normally signal hard drive failure, main causes are over heating mostly in the original 60gb ps3, i contacted sony and paid £131 for a reconditioned unit that again went faulty to which sony sent me a spanking new 180gb ps3

attempted repair will not last forever but may last for a bit, i would buy a new one and save the hassle

Back in December my 60gb launch ps3 died and I forked over $150 to have Sony "repair" it. A month and 2 broken ps3's later they finally sent a "repaired" ps3 back. Exactly 91 days later it got YLOD again and they refused to take it back SO...

I decided to attempt repair myself and I FIXED MY PS3! All my game saves and setting were also saved 👍 I'm so happy, I just had to post :sly:

If your PS3 is out of warranty then just try and repair it yourself. $30 heat gun + $10 thermal paste + about an hour = fixed PS3 💡

If it doesn't work then at least you tried.. You can return the heat gun so all you're out is $10 for the paste..

Here's VERY good how-to video:

if its a motherboard problem like my phatty had(solder in dual layer motherboard broke, due to turning on and off of system regualy = cracked solder)
i sent it too console doctor but they said a new motherboard for them to buy is £110 so they sent it back free of charge as i wasn't going to be paying for the repair and they said wait a couple of months for the slim to come out at £249 haha cant argue with the service i got with them

I've been through this myself let me just add:

The only reason to do the fix is if you want to deactivate your account or recover data that you had not backed up. If you have successful performed the fix there is still a good chance your PS3 is going to YLOD again.

If you have every intention of buying a new Slim, then don't bother trying to do the fix. Sell the broken one on eBay. Your PS3 has a seal on top of the main screw where it comes apart. Once you break the seal "VOID" appears on the indicator tape. The ones on eBay with the seal still intact fetch higher auctions.

I fixed my old PS3 twice with gilksys help, but it is only a temporary fix. Trust me, I followed every step exactly. Thankfully Sony just released the data transfer in an update so I could transfer the whole content to my new slim...

yoy can transfer data from your old PS3 to your New... google it. you connect them to gether and transfer it

Obviously not, you will have to fix the ylod, then transfer the data to the new one, which by the way also deactivates the old system. I am so glad it kept up dring the whole night for the transfer, because not long after it was done, it ylod'ed again. So I fixed it a second time, held longer (2 months) and broke again...

You can but you first have to do a few things which are mentioned on the side

Take note if you don't have a heat gun (like me) you can bake it in the oven.

That's what I did and it worked great then I bought a Slim and hooked them together to transfer the data.

Agree, when mine broke down i fixed it a fee times but it will ylod again after a short time

I have a slim and a yellowish light beside my green light blinks when the ps3 is working. Should I be scared???

I'm not exactly sure if I'm correct but isn't the light your describing the HDD indicator light, meaning that light comes on when your game is saving?

It just flickers when ever I go into a new menu or during a race. Am I good?
