I Photoshop 7 i use the magic wand of hope and happiness to select the bits you want 'clear', then go to the HELP menu and select Create Transparent Image or something like that and read the instructions carefully (saves a lot of time). I've NO IDEA why they stuck it under the fricking help menu, but it's there anyhoo. Hope that helps at least someone
