Are you kidding?
Just a quick question- Would editing a post rather than making a new one conserve energy in any way?
I really don't mind how tenuous/tedious the link is.

Power-wise, if there is any benifit, I think it would be so unbeliveably minuscule that it is basically nonexistent.

Hitting refresh on any decent sized thread probably uses more power than editing/creating a post. Why the interest?

I want to save the trees by editing. Like I said, tenuous links.

If you want to save trees then recycle paper.

If you want to save power then turn off your computer and air conditioner.

If you want to save energy then stop thinking about this.

:)

Edit: Why do you want to save trees anyway?

No. You either write a new record or update an existing one. The only difference is the area of the disk that gets written to.

Hmm. But what about that it might save some bandwidth by not registering the thread to the new posts page and it get lesser clicks? Can bandwidth be transformed into energy somehow?

Well, the New Posts page is generated automatically from a query run on the database. Obviously, if more people read the post because it's showing as new, then yes, there will be a consumption of energy from all of the systems involved in showing that post.

I don't think that "consumption of bandwidth" will increase energy use. However, any device that actually processes the data, such as the server, the routers, modems, PC etc, will use energy. But there would be no difference between them showing a new post vs an edited post.

The bandwidth to this site is not increasing new posts versus edited old posts. So there's no help there.

The disks are spinning and the modems are blinking regardless so I don't think you're conserving more energy one way or the other.

However, even if there were more electricity conserved by editing old posts versus making new ones... that wouldn't help the trees. We don't use trees for electricity.

Why? It's a perfectly valid question.
'Valid' and 'not absurd' are different things.
Valid = yes
Absurd = very yes

If you want to save electricity, not making a thread would be the way to go. If you must make a thread, make it one that won't get views or responses.

Shouldn't this be in the conversation forum? And yes, that does bring up another point, if it used more electricity why make a whole new thread?

Hmm, what uses more energy:

  • Searching for a thread in the GT4 forum, then going through 20 pages in 10 different threads to find your answer
  • Making a new thread and starting a 3 page flame war with people telling you to search first

:lol:
