Question regarding using the Controllers for GT4.

@Duke :sigh of relief: Thanks for that re-assurance Duke (and thanks also to TigJackson for the additional viewpoint).

I'm very glad to hear that I sha'n't be going thru' the pain of transition from DS2 to Wheel only to find it's actually worse as well as costing me a packet :wipes brow:.

I'm actually lookling forward to going "Wheelie" as I suspect that it will make the game 'feel' much better if nothing else {and, given my wonky right hand, it should help on eliminating the physical pain of races longer than ten laps too 👍}

well, what you should do is play GT4 w/ your controllers, then challenge this guy to a race and let him use his fancy shmancy wheel and whoop him. that would shut his biased ass up.

Reminds me of back in the day in GT2 when I challenged this guy at my university to race his EVO vs. my S4. I brought over my PS1 and my DS controller and he brought his regular PSX controller with no analog sticks, just the digital d-pad and buttons. He wooped my ass with his EVO, then we switched cars, but no the controller and he wooped me again but with my S4. So it wasn't a car advantage. Some people just have their own preferences on controllers. I like the comfort of just having the DS2 in my hands and lay back on my recliner chair. With the wheel you have to keep a certain posture but its definitely more fun to play with the wheel. :dopey:

I loved using the Radio Control style controller for GT2, and was disappointed that I couldn't use it in GT3, but I got the wheel for my birthday anyways....

Interstingly, I never used the wheel in GT3. Now, all I use is the wheel in GT4. I've yet to do a lap with a DS2. I just made a mount so that I could sit in my glider rocker and drive in comfort.

Honestly, all it takes is a skill saw and some sheet rock screws to build something that will suit your comfort needs if you want to race on the couch.

I'm going to build something a little fancier and more stable and adjustable in the next couple of weeks. I'll post some pictures around here somewhere if I actually do what I say for once ;)

Am I the only one that uses the right analogue stick for gas an brake?
You can get really decent throttle and brake control with a DS2 controller. I've never had problems.

I was getting all sorts of silvers on my licence tests on the first try (I have no desire to get gold on them, I just want to race).

Make sure you have a newer DS2. One that the analogue sticks don't rotate. Your thumb will slip off the spinny ones from time to time.

I've been a analog stick DS and DS2 driver since GT2 (I don't think the DS was around for the original GT). My problem is that for whatever reason I got used to using the left stick for throttle/break and the right stick for steering (I think because I started playing GT around the same time I was playing Descent on the PC, and was used to using my right hand to steer and left for throttle). It hasn't really been a problem until GT4 - for whatever reason, I can't seem to totally disable the right stick acting as throttle/brake. I assigned the left stick to throttle/brake in the settings menu, and the right stick to steering, but unfortunately the right stick still controls throttle/braking also - which is really annoying, because if I accidentally push the right stick forward or (more often) back a little bit in a turn, it overrides my throttle inputs with the left stick - and I end up with very weak braking or acceleration (and usually a head-on with the wall). if anyone has a way to use the right stick for steering only, and disable its control over throttle, I'd love to hear it. Otherwise I guess I'll eventually have to learn to switch my thumbs around - but I have a lot of years of playing GT my way, so I'm not sure how well it would work out (why oh why did they do this? The controls worked fine in GT3, why'd they have to go and screw them up???). Ah well, it's still a whole lot of fun.

I aslo have a question about the DFP.....

The other day i was playing GT4 with my DFP wheel....and it starts to shake really bad while driving.....and it gets really annoying.....has anyone else experienced this when using the DFP for GT4???....because it works fine with GT3...but when i plaay it with GT4 it shakes a lot....anyone know whats up??

Thanks

This an excellent feature many overlook. I didnt pick up on this until I played GT3 like the 2nd time and it makes a lot of difference. If you dont wanna drive with a wheel its about the only way to go. I've never understood the 'touch sensitive' X button and how it functions. Theres not enough 'play' in it from pushed to de-pressed IMO to get the results I personally needed. Once I learned to use the other stick it became a staple of any racing game I play with a controller.

I use both a Logitech Driving Force (not the Pro one) and DS2. The difference in the two really isnt in the handling/turning but in the throttle and braking for me.
Its much easier to get 50% or 80% exactly when you want/need it on the pedals. On the other hand is it completly nessicary and imperative that you drive with a wheel? Nope! Its all personal preference and depends on what you can afford. You arent a less of GT4 player for not owning a wheel, but if you got some extra cash hunt around on EBay for a regular Driving Force.. I only paid 20 bucks for mine and its super fun to race with.

The problem with his brakes locking up is due to him mashing the square button on the controller versues applying a little bit of right stick down.. Was prolly doing 150 and had to drop to second and couldnt time his brakes right. I had this same problem when i first got GT4 because the physics are much more exaggerated in this version.. It requires some fine-tuned control on the users part and for the first few races/laps you take I'd recommend slowing it down a bit till you get the hang of it.. Helped me out :)
