Okay, as far as i know, the internet by wifi on my ipod touch is free. But if i bought the iphone, and used wifi to go on the internet, would it cost me money or would it be for free?

If you're connecting to wifi (which is connected to an internet source) at home then it will be free. There are "hotspots" available in public places but they normally require you to have a subscription. Most hotels will offer free wifi if you're a guest.

I have an iPhone without a data contract so I cannot access the internet through 3g/2g but I can access the internet through my iPhone by connecting to my wireless router. Many iPhone contracts will say free wifi and data which basically means that your iPhone can go connect to the internet via 3g/2g (depending on which model of iPhone you have) and via selected wifi hotspots that belong to the network.

Most wifi hotspots won't let you connect without some sort of validation code so you shouldn't be charged without you knowing about it first.

Yes, anywhere your iPod Touch can get no-extra-cost wifi, your phone will be able to as well. I can find ambient wifi about half the places I go.

Be aware, though, that in the US the iPhone CANNOT be bought without a data plan on your cellular service, which costs an additional $30 per month per line. If you try to use a jailbroken or hacked one, they will figure it out, and bill you for the data plan.
