Quick question about online...

Hey guys... sorry if this has been asked before, but I need to know, really.

I just saw this video of an online GT5P race:

And... well... why are the other cars do darn jittery? In racing, I need to know EXACTLY where the opponent is, if I'm diving down the inside in a bend for example. This alone is enough to put me off online racing, in fact, let alone the fact it looks really unrealistic.

And, also, is it an option to "ghost" the opponents? Or is it standard?

Frankly, my idea of an online race would be one where the opponents don't jitter, and look realistic, and I could actually collide with them :p

Is this fixable? Are PD working on it? It's terribly off putting :(

Thanks.

The opponents only ghost when they're crashing or just got a penalty, and even then it doesn't happen very often any more.:dunce: Lag is not normally a big problem unless there are connection issues.

Paulie pretty much summed it up. I've only had a handful of races where lag has been a problem and they normally disconnect before too long anyway. Most of the time the cars drive like they do in the single player mode. The world events are probably the worst for lag so avoid these if you have an issue with it.

As for the ghosting, its unrealistic but you'll be glad of it when some nutter on N1's hits the barrier in front of you at 160mph and bounces back across the track!

Since my connection is obviously a little dodgier, I wouldn't quite say they drive like in single player mode, but close enough to know EXACTLY where they are.;) I also don't find world events any better or worse than normal events, it just depends on the host.

I'm no technology whizz, but I'm 100% sure it's fixable. A lag free online experience is very important in online racing, so I would be very surprised if PD haven't been working on fixing it for GT5.

The Jittery is caused by lag from the jittery car persons PS3 to the PS network. Not much PD can do about this....

It doesnt happen often but really is dependant on the individuals connection. Unless PD blocks users who have a ping below xxms (which I cant see happening) it will always be an issue.

Can make overtaking tough

It's only truly fixable by making sure everyone playing online has an excellent internet connection, but PD has no control over that.

Even if you have a good connection, you cannot guarantee that it'll be good all the time.

You've also got the issue of the kid playing GT online in his bedroom. He's halfway through a race, with no lag, when his sister decides to download some music tracks, and his parents start watching something on iPlayer. His car will then start jumping about on track.

I think the netcode could be improved on to something like rfactor, which is generally very good online. However as everybody has said, its never going to be perfect unless we're all running great connections, which is impossible.

The best way to deal with what we have now is to avoid world events if you can, try to race with a host who is not only in the same/near by country as you but also has a great connection & finally make sure there is no other net activity going on while you're racing. The cars still won't be as smooth as single player but it'll be much better.

On top of that, you basically just learn how to race with jittery cars & give a bit more room than you would when racing offfline. When it comes to heavy lag though, good luck because cars will be all over the place :scared:
