Racers and GT4

Supposedly, many people, even racers, have hailed the physics in GT4 as the best in any game. I was wondering if any racers could explain how the handling feels in real life compared to the game for the various cars they've driven. I searched, and couldn't find much... I was just curious in the various driving subtleties of each car in real life vs. the game... especialy with the DFP wheel, how real does it feel for all of you racers?
Well to tell you the truth the game or anygame out there will never compare to a real race car, or street car.

First off I raced Go Karts when I was 13 all the way till I was 19. I was pretty damn good to espacialy at chasing somebody down. I love having a target.
Ive raced full bodied race cars all over the place from California to Freaking off roading in Africa.

And I still have a realy bad case of LEADFOOTING it on the 101. Well all over the place realy.

Any how you can never realy feel the wieght transfer in the game, you will never feel the tires slipping away from you, you will never feel the excitement of truely drifting all four wheel through a set of S's or through a turn. And you will not feel the track with you ASS as they say in racing. Your Butt is your guide in the car I know it sounds funny but thats where it all starts. When car starts to wanna spin you dont have the ability like you do in a real car to save it and actualy have it work in your favore. It just isnet the same.

Dont get me wrong the game is great, well so far the best out there, but just cant realy compare it to the real deal.

Another example: My best friend just got an SL65, needless to say NICE RIDE!!
But compared to the game, the real car is a neck breaking beast under acceleration.
That kinda feeling you will never get in a SIM>

Grand Prix Legends has a very steep learning curve, but the advice I was given worked wonders. Someone said "Drive about 100 laps at Monza. You'll be fine then." I did, and I was. In the space of a couple of weeks I leapt from the back of the grid to race winner in my weekly online GPL league.

Hehe, thats exactly what I did when I was cutting my teeth in it. The amazing thing I found was that I never bored of that track when racing online. Always produced electric races and there's always a tenth to be gained.

I haven't played it in 2-3 years. I must get back into it.

As far as PC racing sims go, I put my vote in the following order:

F1 2002 (and its mods)
GTR (originally a mod for F1 2002 and now soon to be released as a full game)
GPL
Live For Speed

Bar none those are the best sims that average joes can buy and play on their PCs. And the physics in those games are a lot harder than GT4. I think GT4 is excellent, don't get me wrong but obviously they want joe shmoe to be able to play it so they adjusted the trie grips to be higher, at least that's how it feels like compared to the PC racing sims. Using Sports tires in GT4 feels much like using Soft Racing Slicks in GTR. And thats what really got me impressed when I played GT4 the first time. I was like  . Once I started playing with Racing Medium tires in GT4 it all got much easier though.

You are looking for this: the Konami wheel for Enthusia

Go to Enthusia movies page

click on the GC Movie at the left menu and then choose the first video (there's a miata / MX doing cone slalom)

enjoy (video is in a popup, I think is a flash video)

very impressive

I emailed Konami representatives about that wheel, and I got this:

excellent post! I think enthusia looks fantastic! If you could post the email address for Konami i would love to correspond with them about their game. Im very glad to see someone taking the time to make a good product, with realistic handling. Now if they can do enthusia with an assignable clutch button (either a gameport controller or a 2nd player controller button), then that would be realistically all that would be needed. I wish game manufacturers wouldnt be so scared to put it in.

Well duh... I feel what my car is doing... How the terrian feels... How it drives on high speeds... The gravity pulls... And that is normal driving speed... There are many senses that cannot be reproduced in any gaming hardware available...

When I first got my Boxster, I used to take it to the mountains all the time and drive it at 9/10s on the way up and 8/10s on the way down. I've driven many of the cars in GT4, but I'd have to agree with most people on here. If you have a choice of driving your sports car in real life vs the game, you'll always pick real life. But the game is great because we can't afford all of the cars we want (I still haven't driven a E36 M3, E46 M3, Honda S2000, WRX STi, 997 Carrera S, etc) so it tries to do a good job of simulating everything we can't afford. The steering with a DFP is really realistic IMHO, especially drifting on road tires with no TCS/ASM. I've noticed there's a difference between no camber drifting and camber drifting in GT4! (i.e. if the car is leaned in on the curve or leaned out). The braking mimics a car with ABS disabled (pull the chip/cut the wire). If you're good at brake modulation, you can skid your tires even if you have ABS. The Boxster has good enough brake pedal feel to do this in real life, I'm glad GT4 introduced this aspect in the game as you can't rely on ABS to race quickly.

What setting do all of you DFP drivers put your wheel to get the most realistic feel? I had it at strong on the settings in the game and weak on the wheel, but I feel that there is still too much of a pronounced road grip feedback. When racing the feel of the grip isn't that great is it?

I agree with you 100%. 👍

The racing physics are spot on. You can literally take some of what you learn in GT4 and take it to the track. GT series has actually helped me learn the proper racing line on a track.

However the drift physics..well...ummmmm...errrrr.. 👎

I dont' know if its the steering wheel size because thats the first thing I thought. Then I switched it over to 200 mode so I could turn in easier, but it exhibited the same behavior. Actually 200 mode is useless for drift because you can't make the minor adjustments needed to countersteer and correct your line.

My main issues is drift initiation. With my stock S13 (140hp) I can initiate a J-turn drift in second gear simply by turning hard and fast into a corner. In GT4 its impossible, even with the HKS S15 and literally NO rear grip.

I don't doubt you can drift in GT4, in fact I know its possible, however the physics are NO WHERE near the racing physics in the game.:grumpy:

You're giving GT4 too much credit. If the physics were on the spot, driving the R8 in the game would be a hell of a challenge.

im no racer but i love to drive my mustang and Kia on old dirt roads way out in the middle of nowhere and i must say the rally is really accurate
