i didn't literally mean he was slow would never outright call someone slow if i never raced them, but if you think pushing a car on racing softs to the edge is easy, then your not anywhere near the edge... meaning your just... slow

the faster cars with stickier tires require quicker reaction times. combined with the perfect line.

i will admit 6:45 is damn fast under those circumstances. i gave it a few trys (you are refering to the actual seasonal with all the AI getting in my way correct?) i managed to get into the 6:50's until i got fed up not knowing if you did this in a time trial, online, or with or without skid, seeing as it stupidly lets you turn it on. and i just got sick of all the constant tire screeching noise haha.

i'm not sure what my top speed was, as soon as i hit 1:55 i switched to the gallardo and hit a 1:53, the italia won't hit that so i just gave up on it. seeing as it won't record it
 
I raced with RS tires a lot, it is not "easy" when you race against the the guys that are good (small list). When on the limit they break lose very fast and every thing comes faster.
But in a race with "casual" racers RS tires are just boring.
Now, driving a sub 450PP car on CM or CH tires fast is just as hard and for most harder instead of matching seconds you are shaving hundreds of a second, you use the throttle and brakes much more to make the car turn.

When I'm goofing off offline: CH tires, 560PP or less at any track.
When I'm goofing off online with friends: Any thing from RS to CH. Still, most of my friend use SS tires or less now.
 
I mean if you guys going to hate on tires... Why just one specific tire and not the whole type?
I have no problem with these tires... I even see much difference with RH.
 
I don't think anyone cares what tires anyone else uses. It's the fact that since most lobbies use RS tires, so it forces other players, who want to drive on lesser tires, to throw on racing softs in order to stay competitive.

The general popularity is a problem, but just as big is the inability to search for tire restrictions. 1 room with RH tires can be hard to find in a sea of RS lobbies. If you could actually find the restricted rooms, it would be a lot easier to organize races on those tires.
 
I don't remember telling anyone how they should be playing the game, I was stating what the game's purpose is. I'm pretty sure Kaz designed it as a simulator, and then added aids such as driving lines, SRF and the over grippy RS tyres to cater to the more casual gamer for increased sales and fanbase.

As for your second point, this is not what I've experienced at all. In all of the RS rooms I've been in, the racing was very close. This includes people on my friends list, it's always very close on RS tyres, but put them on anything less and you soon start to see the seperation in skill, control and difference in lap times between the players.

I didn't realize you were buddies with Kaz. If he did truly mean it as a hardcore simulator he would have prevented RS tires from being equipped to all but the fastest cars. Seeing as how you can put RS tires on a 15 hp car in the game, I'd say Kaz left it open for anyone to drive any way they wanted to.

Your experience on RS tires is different from me then, and anyone else I've ever talked to on GTP. Yes I've raced in rooms with people on my friends list that are close in skill with me and they are close races but that goes for any tire not just RS tires, because they are skilled drivers. It's not the tires that make them fast or good. But in your average, random online open lobby, the differences between the front and back of the grid on any tire are usually huge. To say that RS tires require little skill is just a fallacy.
 
Race Softs for stuff I'm not really bothered by, like 5 lap Indy races offline.

Racing Hards for the majority of race cars, RM's and TC's

Sport Softs for non-tuned, tamer Race cars, RM's and TC's.

Sport Hards for the lightly tuned FF road cars in online racing series.

And comforts for the vintage cars I usually race.

I don't really drive much other than those cars.
 
I was doing some seasonals at my friends house, and the RS from SH tires (the RSs) improved my time in a Lotus Elise by 6 seconds. The grip with that setup is cartoonish, as that I am passing other cars at 15 mph on the corners...
 
I've hated them since the game came out, they are used by new people to the game and people who lack skill which I think is a shame because it means they can't develop. One friend of mine claimed he had tuned a car for grip... so I borrowed it off him, surprise surprise the suspension was totally stock and the tryes were racing soft. He then says "I'm a really good tuner, look at the grip". They require no skill in tuning or driving so are thus looked down upon by the rest of us. I'm glad more and more people are seeing it! (:
 
Correct me if i'm wrong, but aren't on a race track, so why not use race tires? It's not the tires that matter, it is the driver.

How many people here have driven an actual 800-hp Prototype or Formula car and can say, unequivocally, that the RS tires are too forgiving and take less skill to drive in the game as opposed to a real life racing situation?
 
The fact is that tires in GT5 are either too grippy in certain situations, and not grippy enough in other situations.

As a game, to me, Racing Softs are the equivalent of Marathon Lightweight Commando + Tactical Knife in Modern Warfare 2. It's a pest. It's annoying, and it's damn near impossible to wean them off of it. When a handful of people ask you to derestrict the tires, it becomes a problem, especially since it's a problem I constantly see (hence why I quit online racing). As a simulator, one can only assume RS tires are based off of super-slick tires with glue on them...

Anyway, its purely because the amount of grip they have.
Some think they are unrealistic but i don't, i think they are same as softest tyre in F1, its not impossible to break traction so they clearly aren't some sort of "cheat tyre".

People think they are superior/better drivers if they race on comfort softs!
NO! They are good drivers on comfort softs, if someone had only ever played on RS tyres and raced the "superior" guy in a race using RS tyres the guy who had played all the time on RS tyres would probably win.
If you had another race on CS tyres then the guy who normally races on CS tyres would probably win.

It doesn't make you a better driver than someone who uses high grip tyre if you use low grip tyres, it just makes you better on low grip tyres

Of course they look and feel too grippy, imagine putting softest F1 tyres on your Ford Mondeo in real life, they would be the same as the game, huge, huge grip!

Compare lap times and cornering speed. In F1 cars Soft tires (second softest) are equivalent to Comfort Softs. That's how unrealistic RS are.

If it was truly a simulator there would be one tire type per car, at most 2, and racing tires should be removed altogether (including RH), or make all a lot less grippy.

Agree with this entirely, in my case that would be true as I never drive with RS on cars that are not appropriate for it.

A tire does not simply say one's skilled or not (although to be fair I see many people with RS that fail miserably), however successfully driving a car with comfort tires / no aids is harder, there are a lot more/bigger parameters of things that can go wrong.
I might want to add, if I say successfully; driving that car without bumping into others/go off the track/crash, at a steady pace... that's what I like about heavy damage, you realize going fast is actually not the most important aspect of racing.
 
If you are on a server or something like that, and you want to be host, simply turn tire damage on, see how long it takes to wear out your racing softs untill you can't lap well, then change the number of laps to one or two over that. That way, if you use RMs or harder, you roar by the people in RS who's tires have popped. Have fun!

Ignore the lap times, it's more about driving dynamics. Tires in the game are simple grip multipliers, that is the problem.
 
They manage to pull the worst of handling characteristics out of nearly all cars, especially street. Every corner feel's like you're just hanging on to the tyres, and not trying to maintain the cars balance or momentum. I just find them no fun compared to Sports soft downwards.

Racing softs don't particularly demand the car to be set up for mechanical grip. Hence why I don't personally use them.

I love Sports Soft tyres for the fact that they come across as the tyres that give the best return in terms of grip when you tune a car well, and not just relying on the tyres.

I might want to add, if I say successfully; driving that car without bumping into others/go off the track/crash, at a steady pace... that's what I like about heavy damage, you realize going fast is actually not the most important aspect of racing.

Going the fastest you feel you can. Not the fastest your car can.
I hate those people that come online and bounce off of every wall and think they are amazing because they use RS tyres with 1000hp.

I enjoyed reading most of the posts on this thread.

I personally race on RS most of the time,

I find it enertaining how some will look down upon someone else for their tire choice.

It is a game and play it the way you enjoy.

Going fast on RS is not easy. I have a group of racers that are pretty darn good. If someone new comes in they will almost always comment on how fast the group is.

My point being. Everyone is using the same tire and it is not easy to go truly fast on these tires it takes true skill.

Enjoy the game in a way that makes you happy and everyone that doesn't agree with your choice is able to make a room with the parameters they feel comfortable with.
 
I'm new here, and from reading this thread I get the feeling that people don't like the Racing Soft because they think they're "unrealistic" and that their use should be limited to F1 and Touring cars only.

This sentiment does not, unfortunately, match the real experiences of racing slicks. Racing slicks really do provide a ridiculous performance advantage with absurd levels of grip.

I've done a fair amount of autocross (SCCA) and seen the wide variety of tire types used. Classes themselves have tire restrictions, but in the top tier (street prepared) the fastest drivers use racing slicks because they just provide that big a performance advantage. I commonly see C5 Corvettes and Miatas drive in on street tires with a little tire trailer towing their Hoosiers or Kumhos. They jack the cars up, swap on the slicks and do their runs. And oh man do these guys grip. And the weird thing is how little tire chirp you hear compared to the street tire classes. You can literally hear them sticking to the road because they actually are that sticky once warmed up. You can walk up to a slick tire after a run, press into it with your finger and you'll leave an impression of your fingerprint.

So just as all the online lobbies are littered with drivers on racing soft tires, all the top tier autocross (and other racing organizations) drivers/cars use racing slicks.

By using this same logic about the unfair and unrealistic advantage of racing softs, you guys should also stop jacking up your spring rates to near max and lowering the ride height on your "realistic street legal cars", because you sure as hell would not want to ride in the car like that, you'd end up with bruised livers and high dental bills from the loose fillings.

@ mephiska & rosckolove, I like the posts. I don't race cars in real life and appreciate the insight. And if people think racing with sports tires is more realistic, go for it. But do any of these guys use other options that aren't realistic? Automatic vs. manual transmission in appropriate cars, clutch plates and flywheel with auto trans? How many cars use a tire wear/load indicator in real life, or a course map? Or a red blinking light warning you to slow down? What about useing wieght reduction, or adding a wing? Are those acceptable aids? It would be nice if online racing could have options to restrict all these and a better filter to find the lobbies you want. Oh, and how many drivers in real life sit on the front bumper or roof?
 
I think all those driving aids are fine because they're all trying to compensate for something you can't accurately reproduce with current technology (cheaply anyway) - the sensation of your inner ear and centrifugal force.

When I'm rounding a corner in GT5 at 9/10ths the limit of my tires, all I've got to go on is the sound of tire chirp, the visual effects of the direction of my car, rumbling of my force feedback wheel and any other graphical indicators on screen. But what I'm missing is the physical sense of balance, the feeling of centrifugal force pushing me to the side, both of which provide much more accurate and natural information than a tire load indicator.

Driving in game you're already severely handicapped by the lack of these senses. Visual aids are fine because you play with a level of detachment already. A blinking light telling me to slow down and change gears is helpful since I can't feel what my speed is coming into a corner.

They can keep improving graphics, improve the rudimentary force feedback and sound, but until you get to a holodeck it's still going to lack the engagement of all the senses required.

He said GT5 felt more realistic than Forza 4!
Just had to tell someone, and it came from an actual ex pro race driver!

Not a race car "simulation" anymore if it corners twice as fast as in real life (comparing it to the same car with racing tires) and races becoming smash gas and brake pedals, with virtual glue tires.

This shares the exact same issue with ABS on in GT5: It's a badly put name that doesn't resemble the real thing. For that you have to go to a lower grip tire and always disable abs/srf/etc, because GT5 racing tires = glue and GT5 ABS = magic stability assist a la SRF (that can't be disabled separately) + unrealistic abs.

Some of GTP members here would not like that news :sly: they will make typical excuse that Needell might have played the FM4 with assist or the wrong tire, then start questioning his opinions:nervous: and I guess the same thing would happen if FM4 got the nod ..
