Hi guys!
I'm wondering, how big is the difference in control you get over the car when you're driving with one of those racing wheels for the ps3? I hate help features like skid recovery force etc but on some cars with the ds3 it sometimes just seems impossible not to have them turned on. Do you get better crontrol and are you able to drive the car smoothly and faster with a wheel and those features off compared to the ds3? Could you give me details?
I'm wondering if I should by one you see.
And another thing, do you need something to place or screw the wheel on cause im sitting on my couch when racing and the only solution I got would be to have it on my lap? does that work or is it hard/ worse to drive like that then with the ds3?
How are your guys set up? Also your driving set ups with traction control etc for those of you who got em wheels?
Any advice?

A wheel gives you finer control than a controller. If you drive IRL it'll feel intuitive and you should be beating your controller times before too long. It's a way better experience with a wheel and is how the game is meant to be played.

You really need a suitable way of mounting it though. It won't be much good on your lap. If you're on a tight budget maybe make a stand. Otherwise a wheelstand pro or something similar is the way to go if you need to be able to put it away when you've finished playing.

You shouldn't need any assists really, if you do, practice!

I have one of these and would recommend it if you get a wheel it's compatible with. I started out with an ironing board and dining chair and that worked fine too, not as solid as a purpose built product though.

DFGT is a cheap entry level wheel. Excellent for the price.

I have played with a DS3 from the start and have progressed reasonably and thought I was doing ok. Went to my mates the other night and had a try of his DFGT

As a comparison I did a lap of Grand Valley Speedway in a Toyota Minolta 88C-V race car and after only 10 mins on the DFGT was 8 seconds quicker than with the DS3.

Really feel I'll need to get a DFGT (other wheels available) to move some bronze trophies to gold.

The drive will definitely be smoother, maybe not from the start, but in time you'll get better. Drifting is pretty difficult, but that shouldn't stop you from getting a wheel. It just takes practice.

Playseat w/G25

I have the PlaySeat, white, just like Komui is sitting in in the ad for PlaySeat... with a G25 Logitech wheel. I moved the brake to the clutch location to get around the post that holds the wheel but other than that it is a great experience.

I am currently working on a home built version with top hung pedals and a nicer seat but this has been an excellent interim piece. I paid $125 for the wheel a few years ago on Craigslist, and $150 for the seat on Craigslist. Got the seat November 2010, had the wheel since just after the G25 came out. Kid got it as a gift and played more shooting games so the wheel was as good as brand new when I got it.

It is more like "driving", versus playing a driving game with the controller. That being said, I am still faster in some places with a combination of the D pad and joysticks on the DS3. I still have some races and some cars I prefer using it for more control. Like on dirt. Haven't gotten used to the amount of flailing you need to do with the wheel to maintain car control on dirt. Or I am really bad at it and shouldn't be flailing at all... :dunce:

But, any NASCAR events, i.e. the Jeff Gordon Special Events, are much easier with a wheel and pedal because you have to be sooooo smooth, and drag the brakes for cornering or setting up for drafting etc. And the throttle and brake pedals make it easier to get in and out of corners with high powered cars. More intuitive feeling for when to hammer it from the apex off.

Indy and Daytona with a wheel and pedals feels pretty cool. Nurburgring is a workout until you get used to the wheel and how many fine corrections you need to make to negotiate the 147 corners. Obviously premium cars, behind the wheel view, is the only way to thoroughly enjoy the realism of a wheel.

It all takes some getting used but changes the whole experience in a real positive way. If you can get a seat, or look online to see some designs and build one, that really is the best way to enjoy the wheel. Before I got my seat I had clamped the wheel to a variety of things and it was never natural so I always felt it had inherent latencies in regards to realistic steering. That opinion has changed now that it can be properly adjusted to fit me and my style of driving.

Most of all have fun!

That seat config looks awesome indeed ^^ Sadly I don't have the space for it :/

Great replies guys, gonna take a look at those links shortly!! ;)
Btw iron board and dining chair sounds pretty classic ^^ Now that's passion ^^

I used DS3 the first month with GT5.
Used G25 wheel last 2 months.

All licenses and challenges on gold with DS3, but when I got to Vettel's challenge I was 'forced' to put the G25 on.

DS3 I used on my couch, sitting relaxed playing on my bigass plasma screen.
When I started using the G25, I mounted it on my computer desk, and I'm using my computer-LCD for it.

Pro's and Con's DS3 vs Wheel?
DS3 Pro:
- More relaxing
- Can use it from couch
- Does not require a lot of space
- Cheap
DS3 Cons:
- Need more driving aids
- Definately slower and less controll

Wheel Pro:
- No need for driving aids (maybe ABS), even LM cars like Minolta are controllable and drive well.
- Faster laptimes
- Important when driving online in races over many laps: far more consistent laptimes
Wheel cons:
- Need more space, if not using playseat, at least mount it on a desk
- More expensive, I suggest DFGT or G27 wheel, don't bother buying cheap shyte

I love the feel of my DFGT. It's smooth and corner entry/exit feels intuitive. I also tend to bounce back and forth between controller and wheel. A wheel enhances the game so much more and is the only way to truly experience the game. I use my wheel with all aids off, even with the controller I race all aids off. I use my controller when I can't achieve gold on license tests with my wheel. On top of that, I use my controller when I'm too lazy to plug in my wheel and set it up.

A controller doesn't brake the same...at least with my setup. The controller is far more forgiving. I prefer the wheel. A good wheel is like racing....I dominate the f1 go kart tracks now.
