Hello folks i was just thinking about this and probably was mentioned before, PD never got the whole transition right before did they ?. I mean if a steptronic Alpina B12 750i swb is in the game could they allow you to change to manual S mode ( from D ) so you can sequentially change up & down the gears ?.This is the letter sequence P R N D move stick to left for auto S mode with sequential manual also. What about the 09 Jag XJ8/R, XK8/R/RS, XF/R.Don't really want a 1950's manual lorry gearbox posing as an auto ( you can see what i mean though ).Some cars have got LSD, self leveling sports suspension + sport mode, others had similar drivetrain & suspension that would go unnoticed in a Triumph Herald.Maybe it's too much to put in console games i don't know. What are GTplanets thoughts on the subject ?.

It would be reallllyyy nice if these things really happen in the game! But I think that if they put a car in the game with for example, suspension adjustment, they would choose for the sportiest option, since in-game it would be very hard to change it (I mean, there's not enough buttons in the controller)... And I think the same about the automatic gearbox...

But I think it would be nice if they fix the Honda Fit gearbox... Because when you accelerate, the car keeps something like 7000 rpm, and it would never happen in a real Fit...

It would keep on going to 7000rpm, it all depends on how much you depress the accelerater, as in most automatic cars.

The only thing wrong with Gran Turismo automatic transmissions is that when you only use half-throttle it still changes at redline, as opposed to lower down the rev range, which would happen in real life.

Yeah, supposedly Enthusia recreated automatic transmissions they way they actually work, but GT uses the formula most games use.

I wish they brought out another iteration of Enthusia, it was a great game just overshadowed by the nostalgia of the GT series., something that Forza has being trying to take for 3 iterations now and still not acheived.

I fully agree on this, transmissions need to be accurate, an If a can comes with only Auto or only Manual, we shouldnt have the choice...

And the same goes for TCS and ASM and even ABS, if a car doesnt have it, dont put it on.... and if people want TCS on a F40 or ABS then they have to pay extra to have an "imaginary" system installed.

I think the auto transmission in GT is still manual, but the game changes the gear for you instead of by you.

Gran Turismo is called by PD itself 'The real driving simulator', but we must not forget that it is still a videogame, and it aims to be fun.

I think having an automated manual gearbox should be in the difficulty settings as a choice for little peeps and for people who never played a racing simulator. For veteran racers etc the choice of factory gearboxes are there before you buy a new car.

It's just a problem with people who've bought steering wheels with gear stick gates.Never going to buy every single type of gear stick for use with the wheel me ----->:dopey:.

What???

Why do we want to press half on the throttle and gears move up?
This is a racing game not Sunday driver simulation. Sure it sounds nice.. but we really want to be closest to red line for each corner.

----

Another take..
At least make cars that have AUTOMATED transmission really have automated transmission. If you want manual, you have to buy upgrade.

I got a solution to the TC & DSC (different abbreviations for each car) controls.Whilst racing you could choose L3 to switch the TC on or off and R3 to do the same with the dynamic stability control ( i don't know which buttons can be assigned for wheels ).

About the Alpina BMW i mentioned in the first post, all gears, park & neutral can be selected in the pit lane & on track.Whilst in first hold brake & keep pressing L2 for D to P, then use R2 to go back to sports mode ( for steering wheels foot on brake, gearstick in reverse or whichever way), when in 1st gear press R2 for second and so on.

It would in a CVT Fit. ;)

Well i own a Line6 PodX3, a digital guitar amp and effects modeler, the guitarists equivalent of Gran Turismo for drivers.

It's an "all in one" type of box, with hundreds of different amplifiers of all types emulated, now one of the main points people bring up is the fact that most amps have at least 2 channels, and on some up to 4 with many switching options, Line6 had to sort of "make decisions" when it came to what they modeled (you only get one channel per model, some models are there TWICE just for the sake of different channels).

I think it's the same issue in this instance, the dev's must make decisions. There's bigger issues in the game than switching driving modes.

One question you have to ask yourselves is...would you use the other transmission modes? You're playing GT, not a drive-to-the-shops-must-have-something-that-will-shift-smoothly-otherwise-the-milk-will-fall-over simulator. Generally the 'lesser' modes in these gearboxes won't shift as fast, they're more clumsy and slow and are designed for fuel efficiency as much as anything else. Quite literally, they have no purpose in a game like this.

I say they just use their own shift patterns (which are generally smart enough and they aren't a massive pain on a track), with the real shift times/smoothness of the top/sport/track/S button mode of the real car.

The Nissan GT-R has a grip-sensing center LSD that sends power to wherever it can be used (front/back). In GT5:P, you can choose the torque split in the GT-R, but I want it to sense where power is needed (like in the real car) and send it there. It would be nice if you could choose options that are specific to one car like auto torque split (or the Manettino in the F430 and 599).

Realistically working automatic transmissions is a must for a simulator. When you floor it, it will change gears at redline and when you baby it, then it's smooth ride with gear changes at 1800 rpm. What a difference!

No i won't use D ( don't know why i suggested it really ) just reverse and S mode.The other choice would be the Alpina B12 coupe' 5.7ltr V12 with 6 sp manual g'box.

Just give us the realistically working reverse. Having to push the triangle to put in reverse instead of reducing two gears is just plain ridiculous... Also we can't put the car in neutral at all.

When they do it right it'll be the time for wanting more :).

You can go direct with H pattern shifter and into neutral (in GT5P atleast), but yeah I agree holding triangle to go back is silly.

I would tend towards those wanting more realism, so no ABS on cars without ABS in the real world and no manual option for cars which were only made as autos.

However, there should be driving aids for those who want them. So a brake assist run by the game to help those who need help with their braking and a gear assist to help those who don't want to change gears. This is not the same as modelling real ABS and auto gearboxes.

Anyone else want to add something to this thread ?.Sorry i was bored.

Many cars in GT4, including the majority of japanese Kei cars, most american cars, etc, were automatic, but they behaved like manual transmissions with a clutch. I really hope automatic transmissions will be properly simulated for all cars that will have them in GT5.

Personally I also think they should behave like real automatics: with little throttle they have to change gears at low rpms.
About manual transmissions, I hope there will be a way to control how fast a gear change should be. It feels out of place when I'm crusing at low rpms that the game changes gear at the fastest speed possible. I think gear change speed should be tied with how strong/quickly gear change buttons are pressed.

Another thing: in past games gear changes were strongly limited by how quickly (or slowly) engines were able to freewheel.
However, especially for low power engines, freewheeling speed was far too slow. I hope this will be corrected too because it affects gear change speed as well.

The thing is, when you hit the breaks, revs drop and trans kicks into highest gear... when exit the corner and mash the throttle it will take time to kick down a few gears and bring engine revs up. This might affect your lap times

I have always dreamed to see something like this in a game. I mean ... how hard can it be ? For example it would be nice to have a BMW M3 SMG or Manual or the M power button, etc :D

Yep, and on cars with only auto transmissions available that would be something you would have to work around. I'm OK with them having real auto, computer controlled manual, and real manual all in the game, but if a car doesn't have a manual transmission option then realistically that shouldn't be available.

For example, I believe the Aston Martin Rapide has an automatic-based transmission. That should absolutely affect lap times when using it.

In M mode in most or all ( not driven all ) Beemers the revs tend to stay up, like a manual car does.Meaning you get engine braking. The Steptronic g'box does this.

Reverse gear should be selectable by going back (using a DFGT) through the gears. 6-5-4-3-2-1-N-R.
