Realistic LAN Rules and LAN Points

A few of my friends set up a LAN the other day and we found that some of our driving techniques are completely unrealistic and unfair. So, we wanted to set up some rules during LAN play to follow to uphold the game for what it was intended to be. The Ultimate Driving Simulator.

The following are the rules we have come up with so far. Your suggestions to the most realistic experience possible are welcome and encouraged. Also post comments on the basic point system I derived. Please help us!

Rules to playing GT4 in LAN mode for the most realistic competitive experience. (not GT mode)

Any violation to the following rules is cause for disqualification

Rule #1 All driving aids must be turned off.

Rule #2 Thou shall stay on the designated course and off the grass at all times, no shortcuts. (unless its an accident, Fuji is not an accident)

Rule #3 A) Thou has the option between N2s or N3s when given a tire option.
Rule #3 B) If Ns are not available, S1s are the only option.

Rule #4 Thou shall not modify cars. (I don't think you can anyways) Stock is the law.

Rule #5 Thou shall not pick a far superior car compared to the opponents car (unless authorization is given by the opponent with the inferior car), a good indication of superiority is the ability to choose racing tires. With this in mind, if the superior car wins, the driver of the superior cars reserves no bragging rights.

Rule #6 Thou is allowed to pick a car that an opponent does not have access to (due to not unlocking it), as long as the opponent has access to a similiar car within that class. (Ex. similiar power/weight ratio, etc. )

Rule #7 Thou shall not come into a corner "hot" when trailing a lead driver and hit the lead driver causing he/she to run off the road.

Rule #8 Thou shall not excessively or abusively rub an opponent or wall. Treat your car as if it was your sole asset in the real world.

LAN POINTS

5 points = For a Win with a highly inferior car to your opponents
4 points = For a Win by using the same car (test of whose the better driver under the same conditions)
3 points = For a Win with a different car but of similiar class
2 points = For a Win with a highly superior car to your opponents
1 point = For a Loss (to encourage fair play)
0 points = For a loss due to a violation of the rules or resetting without authorized consent of the other player.

*Points should be tallied by 1) total, 2) average points per race (mean), and 3) Number of times each point total was won for a given race.(modes) * This is a fair judge of a LAN competitor.

*If the race is agreed to be reset by all drivers, then whoever is in the lead at the time the race is reset will get the respective amount of LAN points.
*If a driver in the lead resets (for fear of a comeback, takeover, or loss) without the other driver's consent. The driver that was behind automatically wins, and gets the respective point value for that race. The resetter receives 0 pts.
*If a driver is losing and resets the driver in the lead automatically wins, and gets the repsective point value for that race. The resetter receives 0 pts.

I will update this thread as posts come in and if anyone else finds it useful.

Gran Troy

Thats Quality, Although it rules out, my, wait for a corner and ram them onto the grass technique, or as i call it Assisted braking :)

You know- I pick a car of similar power anyway cause the driver I race is always inferior. One time I let mt 5yr older brother (IN GT3) take a fully tuned Zonda up against a fully tuned 3000GT and he only beat a couple times out of a lot.

I dont think you should get 6 because the other person brakes the rules. You should just get points that corresponded to what you would have got had they not cheated and you still won.

Thought about it, like your idea, I will change it

Yeah, FUJI Is a Complete 🤬

On the other hand im am deffo going to incorporate this at home, for lan parties,
should be sweet, finally a proper set of rules, ounce again

Cheers for all your effort

What about cars that you can`t turn driving aids off in real life?

The debate about driving aids could go on for days. Several factors I took into coniseration with this rule. Yes some cars do have so called "driving aids" in real life...like TCS and other computer controlled throttle adjusters, etc. So I did consider it a possiblity. But.....heres why I did not.

First: In GT4 the driving aids are a general aid for all cars. By saying this, it makes cars of the same drivetrain act somewhat similiar, taking away from the true characteristics of that particular car.

Second: Also in GT4 the default driving aid settings for each car are generally the same, give or take 2-3 level settings on TCS, and even cars that don't have "driving aids" in real life, have them set to "ON" in the game. This general default setting for all cars tells me that it is not an accurate specification setting of the real car. If all default settings in the game are generally the same, how do you know what the accurate setting should be if the car has that particular "driving aid" in real life? If we don't have the accurate setting or data, then we should put all the cars on a fair playing field.

Third and by far the most important reason: I don't have the quote with me, but I purchased the book "Driving the Game, GT4" hardcover....etc. The topic of driving aids is covered briefly in one section of the book and the author states that Kazunori Yamauchi created the "driving aids" to help inexperierenced drivers have more fun with the game. It creates an easier driving experience in that proper throttle control and braking is relatively taken out of gameplay. 👎 Wait a minute.....aren't we playing a driving simulator? If you take 2 of the primary aspects of racing such as throttle control and braking and hand that duty over to the PS2 to "aid" or "assist" you, then you have got an arcade racer, not a simulator. If I want to race the computer I will play GT mode. Concluding that the "aids" defeats the whole purpose of LAN play.

Lastly, I do understand how difficult driving is with the aids off while using a DS2. I have played 35% of the game never using the DS2 (I have only used the DFP). I decided to try and use my Cordless Logitech ($40) the other day and I was horrible, I couldn't control the throttle, I couldn't steer, it was horrible. The DFP is a necessity for me. I can't play the game without it. But yet again I want to simulate driving as much as possible and using a DS2 doesn't get me any closer to that simulation. So I sympathize with those having difficulty and commend those who have mastered the game with the driving aids off while using a DS2 but my only comment to those having difficulty is to save your pennies and get the DFP, its like night and day and opens up a whole new aspect of the game. Many experienced drivers will tell you that you become a better driver on the game once you become accustomed to the aids being off. This is true. You just have to take some time and have some patience to "feel" the car and how it reacts to your inputs.

I hope this ends any questions about driving aids, I think I have covered all my points.

Thanks! :) This thread is not just for me, the purpose is to get other LAN users to come up with universal standards to which we can all abide by. Hopefully it will catch on.
