Is there any maintenance I should do to the G27, so that the steering wheel will get a longer lifespan?

Or install a little computer fan. Cooling needs the most improvement.

I've had mine open to grease the gears up but thats not going to effect the G27 much other that reducing noise a bit, which is very quiet with the helical gears anyway.

The only maintenance I do is to dusting it off every once in a while.

@sagaper, if modding some fan(etc) on your G27, remember where fresh air goes in and where hot comes out.

Ps. It intakes from front and hot comes out from top holes. So don't block airflow by putting something on way or blowing fan to opposite direction.

I've had mine for about 4 years and have only had to open it up once, to clean the POTs (using that same link you have). I've never installed fans, used any cooling (except having flowing air in the area (ceiling fan)), or anything.

I have started to feel a tiny bit of grinding, I'm sure it's just needing some grease. I also think my optical sensor is either going or is bad - not surprised after so long.

With that said, just keep dust out of it and keep it cool - it should will last you years. Also know that it will never over-heat, it'll shut itself off when it gets too hot.

I'm not sure how well a fan works, as I have never tried it myself, but that requires extensive modification of your g27 and it will no longer be stock looking (problem if you want to resell). Just slap an ice pack on the g27 with an elastic band.

Sure, you can play the g27 at ffb 10 for 3 hours straight no problem, but you will lose 80% of the force feedback strength 30 minutes in, meaning you will be ALOT slower, and unable to sense when the car is losing grip and recover the slide as you cannot feel the forcefeedback properly as the wheel is past it OPTIMUM temperature.

Playing a mushy, weak wheel that feels like its an old man out of breath is not FUN; which is the most important thing. Not to mention heat is the number one killer for wheels (or any device).

If you run your g27 with an ice pack on it, it will be STRONGER, spin quicker, last LONGER, and transmit feedback you wouldn't have felt before due to the motors past its optimum temperature.

Even the t500 loses power after 20mins....every wheel except maybe the $1000+ ones will be weaker after 30mins compared to the first couple corners/laps.

My T500 doesn't lose FFB in 20 minutes... we had a 5 HOUR session the other day, stock noisy @$$ (original location) fan hanging on somehow, and didn't notice severe fade. I was worried, but it kept on doing it's thing.

I never noticed severe FFB fade on my G27, and we used to have several hours long Initial D and GT5 sessions on it, and I can't imagine we weren't running the FFB at full blast.

I mean, I'm sure there WAS fade, but 80% at 30 minutes would seem to indicate a greater issue.

As far as G27 maintenance goes, treat it with RESPECT when you use it, (it's a controller, not a monster truck) keep it covered or in the box when not in use (pedals too), unplug it when you won't be using it for long stretches, and keep it clean. I did NONE of these things (except the unplug) and actually even drug the thing around the house BY THE RIM when it was on a Fanatec stand (like an IDIOT, don't do that) and it never EVER gave me one issue, it's a hell of a well built device IMO.

The 30min timemark was used for drifting, I forgot to mention, which heats up the wheel IMO 2-3 times faster than racing at 10 and remember I am on 0.960kg 320mm wheel (200g heavier than stock, 50mm larger); I probably am overstating the effects of heating due to relying on my memory :)

I am surprised your g27 lasted that well at 5 hours...if you do a side by side comparison you will know what I'm talking about...if you are racing for 5 hours the wheel will slowly degrade and you won't notice the change because it's so subtle. That seems very unlikely fading is well known on the g27 wheel.

I have heard a lot of t500 users lose power....it is common in the reviews. You probably don't notice the lose of power as you are too focused on the game....plus the t500 is strong enough already and you may not give it enough of a wringing by running it at 10 ffb or drift with it.

We were racing Rally, 350mm ebay special wheel w/DSD T500 adapter... OBVIOUSLY not as insane in teh wheel action as drift but still a very active FFB profile.

Since (especially that last session I mentioned) I was specifically LOOKING for fade and not seeing any, I doubt I just messed it. I mean, sure, if I was sitting at the wheel that whole time intent on the game FFB fade MIGHT just seem natural until I was like, hey, where's my FFB? But I was switching out with other players and trying to make sure everything was holding up. I was not let down. And it's not the first time we've had this kind of thing go on, and the wheel has always held up.

Still, we handle our wheels differently, drive different disciplines, use different settings, and we all have different perceptions and expectations and senses, so a difference in perceived performance doesn't surprise me, I just think that the numbers you're throwing out there seem a little pessimistic... if your $300 - $600 wheel is crapping out in 30 minutes, there has got to be another issue there... or that drifting is just a WHEEL KILLA!

That's excellent, my g27 is 2.5 years old and I do feel it doesn't perform like it used to, so that could be another factor in my observations.

And yes, drifting is a wheel killer in the virtual world and real life :)

If you have the early G27 that came in the green box design; I prefer replacing the optical encoder for the brass one by CM Laser Service as the plastic encoder unit cracks (depending on how hard you use it). The tiny slots starts cracking and starts losing center in calibration. The new G27 improves but it still cracks BUT there's less slots to avoid ANY cracks going through the holes.

For both G27 (old and new), I would prefer getting the AP Electrix load cell mod. Also at the same time, you should wipe off the dust :P
