Just idling in Mid-Field in a tunnel..
Then a Red Bull X2011 flys by..
Then all I hear is a pop and a high pitched ringing noise.
I turned off my PS3, turned it back on, and it's all fine.
WTF just happened?

Sound glitch? It's a possibility but I'm not sure that's what happened. Maybe it had something to do with lag. I'm intrigued by this now.

Are you running an amplifier or is this through TV speakers? I know some amplifiers/soundsystems have protection built in that prevents you from overloading the speakers with sudden pitch/volume spikes, maybe yours has this built in and you tripped "safety mode"

It broke my TV's sound barrier, that's for sure.

Hilarious. Here's some things to try: first see if your sound works with a source other than the Playstation, try a different game, reset your sound settings on the PS, check your physical connections, test physical connections with replacements, and be sure that the chosen sound settings match up with what the game and your devices support. In this setting, speakers rarely "break" from output.

The game seems to use something akin to the old Walkman "AVLS" system, where the lower volume sounds are boosted to a certain level. If you are sat idling you'll notice the volume of the exhaust slowly climb to a level.

Then some jerk in an X-car tears past on full song and the system doesn't revert the level quickly enough,,, Most likely just tripped a protection circuit in the tv, since a reset sorted it out. :0)

Sorry to be a pedant but AVLS didn't boost volume, it limited it. In this scenario AVLS would have prevented damage by limited the maximum volume of the passing car.

The system on my minidisc, and my now long gone cassette decks, would boost during quiet sections, which made for some very dodgy tapes in the beginning. It uses a Levelling system, rather than a Limiting one, at least all my Sony branded ones did. (Still have the MD deck, and unless I have it set to manual it will try to maintain a certain volume continuoilusly, boosting lows and limiting highs)

Edit: This all happens during the recording phase, so pre recorded stuff would not be affected so dramatically on the boosting phase)

Hate to be insensitive but that has to be one of the best thread names in the history of gtplanet.

Well, if any of you guys want some info.. My TV is an Emerson "32 with a Dolby Digital built-in speaker system.

Oh, don't worry at all, mate.

I've had that happen, it's a sound glitch for sure. Had it actually popped your speakers then they wouldn't work again, and a protection engagement wouldn't emit a ringing noise.
