What do those red flashing numbers that pop up before corners mean?

those red flashing numbers are the suggested gear to be in when going into the corner. obviously unusable if your a drifter, it helps a little if your in that gear.

Ok, Thanks!

 wow, that was just hilarious for some reason. How long has the game been out?

Nick:banghead:

I know, I just never even thaught about it untill just then

I use the shift light when I drift, but I don't go to that gear, I go to the one below it.

As others said, the red number that pops up is the suggested gear for the upcoming turn.

It begins flashing at the suggested brake point for the upcoming turn. These are pretty good starting points and I recommend following them until you have some practice at the game. After that, you can begin adjusting your brake points as you see fit. For some turns, like the Corkscrew, I begin braking even before the gear number pops up. Others I begin braking just as it does pop up but before it flashes. Some I brake well after the flashing. Practice will tell you what do do, but I repeat, they are decent starting points.

You'll also note that suggested gears change with transmission adjustments, and even change to account for the state of your tires throughout a race.
