The wife and I went to the 10:20 showing at the Showcase Cinema. An amazing theater. To give you an idea, this is one of 3 movie theaters in Massachusetts that has a Digital Projector. Episode 2 (Starwars) was simply amazing.

My wife is a big dragon fan, and was waiting patiently to see this movie. After all, the hype had been quite good. The best parts of the movie were shown in the trailers. Easily expected, and unsurprising twists. Very predictable plot, and story line. The special effects rivaled "Dragon Heart", a 6 year old movie.

The story line seemed at points incomplete, and rushed. Instance: the Dragons lived off of the ash from living things that were burned. This was mentioned once in the entire movie, and in the aftermath of a fiery battle. If you missed this 3 second snippet, it leaves you confused as to why the humans helped the proliferation of the dragons. The humans decided to Nuke the dragons, and this created ash which contributes to the dragons available food supply.

Another point that leaves me disappointed. Near the end, the Mr. Badass Military leader, is leading a convoy into London. The road is blocked, and they need to find a way around. Any private in the military can tell you what type of ambush this is. Sure enough, the Dragon shows up and roasts nearly the entire convoy.

Another missed point. The Protagonist in the film, starts off as a young boy, and in less than five minutes they tell the story of how the dragons proliferated, the humans took a step down in the food chain, and the young boy grew into a man. So many good plot builds were missed in this point.

Electric lights, Tanks that didn't need refueling, inexplicable (Well grown) gardens in the middle of nowhere. Things that were never really explained. The ending was predictable well in advance.

Overall a disapoointing way to blow cash for an evening out.

A few good points. The use of Dolby Digital 5.1 surrounds was very well done. I commend the directors ability to produce the 3 or 4 surround efffects that were used.

The dragons looked amazingly real. The ending scene and the first kill scene were exceptionally well visualized, and produced. If the producer had added 15 minutes to this film, solely for history, and plot builds, it could have been a very good movie.

Overall, I'd say wait till this comes out on DVD. If only for the surround effects.

Yes. Digital Projector.

Episode 2 and 1 were shot using digital projectors. This is the way that George Lucas intended that the movies be seen. In other words, there are no film reels. The projectors cost upwards of $100,000, and are incredible. No streaks running through the film, of slight miscues of the sound.

Very nice.

Try $130,000 and that's for the projector alone (includes lamphouse) the server to run the movie from is another $30,000 (will run 4 movies at once) and add onto that whatever you want to spend on a sound system. A Dolby CP-650 which supports Dolby E (sound format of digital cinema) comes equipped to reproduce digital for a measly $10,500... add amps, speakers and... well, that's enough ya?

I think you over rate digital cinema though. It's got some definite advantages over film, but as of yet the potential quality of a film presentation still out classes that of a digital projection system.

Decent review of the movie BTW. I'd agree with most of what you said. This movie wasn't nearly as dissapointing as that Dungeons & Dragons movie though...

Best all time favorite dragon movie for me would still be Dragonslayer. That was an amazing movie.

I thought it was pretty good.
Driftgod told me about this movie after I mentioned Eragon. I thought Reign of Fire was very good and I would recommend it to anyone that likes Dragons. In several ways I liked it better than Eragon.
Are there any other dragon movies I should check out because I liked this one? :) It was hard to believe it was Matthew Mcconaughey.

I have it on DVD, and while I'm not some sort of Dragonmania, I do casually enjoy watching this one. I feel like watching it right now, actually.

I think I taped Reign of Fire... while the story might not be the best in the world, the dragon design was awesome and Van Zant.... McConaughey looked proper badass in that film. He's prob one of my fav actors now after U571, this and Sahara

I hated every bit of this film, very dull IMO... but of course that is my opinion, I did think the CG and SFX were good tho.
