The wife and I went to the 10:20 showing at the Showcase Cinema. An amazing theater. To give you an idea, this is one of 3 movie theaters in Massachusetts that has a Digital Projector. Episode 2 (Starwars) was simply amazing.
My wife is a big dragon fan, and was waiting patiently to see this movie. After all, the hype had been quite good. The best parts of the movie were shown in the trailers. Easily expected, and unsurprising twists. Very predictable plot, and story line. The special effects rivaled "Dragon Heart", a 6 year old movie.
The story line seemed at points incomplete, and rushed. Instance: the Dragons lived off of the ash from living things that were burned. This was mentioned once in the entire movie, and in the aftermath of a fiery battle. If you missed this 3 second snippet, it leaves you confused as to why the humans helped the proliferation of the dragons. The humans decided to Nuke the dragons, and this created ash which contributes to the dragons available food supply.
Another point that leaves me disappointed. Near the end, the Mr. Badass Military leader, is leading a convoy into London. The road is blocked, and they need to find a way around. Any private in the military can tell you what type of ambush this is. Sure enough, the Dragon shows up and roasts nearly the entire convoy.
Another missed point. The Protagonist in the film, starts off as a young boy, and in less than five minutes they tell the story of how the dragons proliferated, the humans took a step down in the food chain, and the young boy grew into a man. So many good plot builds were missed in this point.
Electric lights, Tanks that didn't need refueling, inexplicable (Well grown) gardens in the middle of nowhere. Things that were never really explained. The ending was predictable well in advance.
Overall a disapoointing way to blow cash for an evening out.
A few good points. The use of Dolby Digital 5.1 surrounds was very well done. I commend the directors ability to produce the 3 or 4 surround efffects that were used.
The dragons looked amazingly real. The ending scene and the first kill scene were exceptionally well visualized, and produced. If the producer had added 15 minutes to this film, solely for history, and plot builds, it could have been a very good movie.
Overall, I'd say wait till this comes out on DVD. If only for the surround effects.
