Repetition and luck -vs- skill

When i did the Suzuka Vettel challenge, which took more practice than the licences, i got better and better until i could keep the car on the track for 2 laps while pushing it on the edge, but if i had kept going i would have gone faster, not only done it again, i had reached a point where i was able to drive on the edge for a single lap, and play it safe on lap 2.

More practice would have shaved off another second or so. So yes i think when you gold something, unless its a complete fluke then you can do it time and time again. Many of the licence tests i got gold on the first try, there was only a handful of challenging tests for me. In comparison to the Vettel challenge, which was extremely testing, to aquire gold.

I believe it was Gary Player who famously had the following response to detractors who said he was a "lucky" golfer:

"Lucky? Sure, I'm lucky. And you know what? The more I practice the luckier I get...."

Skill = being able to repeat the task at hand.

Repetition is part of skill learning.

Luck is hitting that gold time when the last 10 runs were all bronze or slower. Still took skill to get the lucky time.

I race several leagues. I will take a lucky win over a skilled 2nd finish any day. ;)

Also I see my skill level raise by lap times and ability to beat people more often then in January. Still learning and still run across that one Alien that makes me look slow. Which is excellent. This keeps me striving to be better. I would rather race with 10 better drivers then me and finish last while learning from them. Then race ten slow drivers and win every race. You gain nothing from that.

Repetition without skill would mean if a person wants to get gold on some event, for example Grand Tour Eiger Nordwand Time Trial, and he lacks in skill but repeats a lot - he'll be getting 1:19:xxx/1:18.xxx all the time.
Repetition is a way of learning, the more you repeat - the more you'll learn what your mistakes were and you'll improve, that is if you have skill.
On GT5 (and every other GT) there is not a single person who got gold trophies in every event on a single try, skilled players repeat to improve, not so skilled players just repeat hoping they'll improve just by repeating and not correcting their mistakes.

Repetition definately develops into skill. Simple as that. With the PSN down these past days (and who knows until when :nervous:), I've been golding my last license tests and Special Events (except the Vettel Challenge).
As a result of many hours of gameplay, tests that two or three months before were horribly difficult came out to be rather easy, for example, the slalom with the Toyota FT-86.
And what really left me stoned: the last time I had given the AMG Academy a try, I was able to gold all the tests except for the four complete laps, and the whole 300SL wet level, which were left all in silver and quite far away from gold times. I decided to give it another try. The first level (300SL in dry conditions) almost made me quit, because I kept slamming into the stupid AI, which is supposed to get out of your way, but finally I managed to gold it ( not by much). Then came the SLS (dry), which I golded at my second try by about 2-3 seconds. After that, the 300SL in the rain. WOW. That's all I can say. I golded the five tests in one or two tries each one at most, including the whole laps at my first try and golding it by about 25 seconds!! And finally, the SLS in the rain. Again, I golded the whole lap at my first try by 30 seconds and improving my former best time in one minute!!! :D

So all I wanted to say with all that story is that with a lot of practice-->skill (and some luck), it is possible to gold all the tests and Special Events, so don't get discouraged my friends :D

@alonsof1fan91

Don't want to offend you sir, but I would struggle, at best, to believe anyone could gold all the license test on the very first try. If you have indeed accomplished that feat, then you are far and beyond a "luckier" driver than most of us.

ESD

Maybe thread should have been 'Patience vs luck or skill' :sly:

Hey, maybe be patient long enough, and PD will reward everybody with all the cars and trophies and tracks, just for putting the disc in the slot. Seems they are heading that way..!

Indeed. Repetition breeds skill.

A lil bit of both. Through repetition comes skill, but with enough repetition a large window of luck begins to emerge.

Skill overcomes luck when you become consistent. So you're lap average is a better testament to your "Skill" then potentially flukey hot laps.

I've done all 60 golds on my main (prepatch) & on my second (after the patch) & it's now a cake run. :yuck:

Before the patch the 2 round races (f.e. Rome/old Ferrari, Alfa/Suzuka, Gallardo/Grand Valley & McLaren/SSR5) licences where the hardest, you needed skill & luck to get not diqualified for bumping a car or getting bumped. Now you can Rambo you through the crowd, ZERO challenge. :ouch:

After the patch i found now simple tests as Schumacher-S or NSX/SSR5 the hardest ones. Even the pilone test with the FT-86 is now with the new steering sensitivity a very easy thing. Prepatch it took me some hours, now i did it in 3 tries (DS3 here).

The licences are more a test how to use the driving aids for your advantage. And you learning which ones slows you down.

I got all 60 gold on the release day of the game. I could be considered all luck of course, but it doesn't appear to suggest that it's all about repetition.
