Replacing wheel on the DFGT ?

Hi guy's, has anyone replaced ther wheel on a DFGT, or does anyone know how the wheel attaches to the main body and is it possible to remove it.

I only ask because I fear the G27 may not be fully supported in GT5 and if my G25 dies I want to check up on my options but keep as much of my home made wheel as possible.

Thanks in advance.

Yeah, you can remove the steering wheel on the DFGT, I did it when I put paddles onto my DFGT. The thought has crossed my mind of making an adapter for it so I could put a real wheel on it. Its a bit of a bear to get the thing removed, nothing like the G27/G25, but it is possible.

More info & pics about paddles for the DFGT?!? Thx!

Thanks for that, I'll sleep easier now !!

It would be a real challenge to replace the wheel on the DFGT, as the wheel has all of the controller buttons built in. I don't think it would be practical, to be honest.

Look here, something similar to what you were looking for!

I think there would be two ways to do this one is to cut off the wheel grip and find a bigger wheel that would attach directly to the part where it was cut off. The hard but proper way would be to actually manufacture a whole new wheel with all the switches, buttons, and turning wheel button. Then attaching that whole switch board to the front of the wheel you want to use. You would really have to be a good craftman to pull that off.

Then again if you would go that route I think you might as well build a whole new system like the Frex wheel and just apply all the same circuit boards and buttons to it. It would probably cost a fortune to find someone to build a one off for you but I'm sure any thing with unlimited budget is possible.

Here is a link to a youtube video to some custom wheel makers.

I wanted to take pics when I installed the paddles but my old camera had died and the new one hadn't gotten here yet.

I put them on because I love the buttons on the DFGT but want the paddles of the G27, so why not have both?

They are steel paddles mounted to the wheel with a hinge, everything hand made. They are rock solid, and I honestly think they feel better than the G27 paddles (but maybe I'm a little biased, hehe).

I originally wanted to mount the paddles/hinges to a ring and then mount that ring to the back of the wheel where the hinges are currently mounted. But since I couldn't find a suitable steel or even plastic ring and lack a tool that can make a ring from scratch that would pass my quality control, I ditched the idea. I really think somebody with the proper tools/hardware could manufacture my original idea and possibly sell it, but I'm not sure how much it would end up costing.

The very first mounting location I used was directly on the actual buttons on the back. It ended up being way too flimsy and if you tried hitting the top or bottom of the paddle it would flex the button and didn't feel right in any way.

If anybody wants to know anything else just let me know, one of these days I may take the front cover off again and take pictures of the inside and how the wheel is actually mounted.

I really don't want to hijack this thread and feel like I already have to a certain extent, so if anybody wants to ask me something, please PM me.

To the OP, one of these days I might be really bored and wanting to redo the mounting of my paddles, when that day comes I will be sure to take pics of all the inner guts of the wheel.

The only thing that would worry me about putting a full size wheel on would be that the DFGT only have one FFB motor, and I'm not entirely sure if that would hold up to a larger wheel. The G27 has dual motors so it might be able to handle the bigger wheels because of it.

I know its an old thread, but I have managed it. DFGT wheel replaced with momo wheel. Took some major mods to do, but well worth it. I did have my doubts regarding the ffb, but it spins up when turned on the same as before, and when racing feels even better than before.

Heres the remnants of the old wheel.

I'd love to see some more photos of this and a description of how you fixed it all together. Looking to do the same thing to mine.

Well, I done this mod in March, and its still working perfectly. It is quite a major mod to do though. Firstly you will need a wheel which has quite a deep offset from the wheel rim to the boss. The DFGT has a flat offset. The wheel I used as the doner was a momo wheel from a Lotus Exige. It has a deep offset to accommodate the airbag, so any similar wheel would do. The diameter is 12 inches.

Removing the DFGT wheel is easy. flick the horn button off using a flat screwdriver, and there are 4 phillips screws holding the wheel to the base. When these are undone pull the wheel towards you gently, as there is a ribbon cable inside the column. Unclip the ribbon cable at the connector.

Thats the easy bit.

Now turn the wheel over and undo the back screws to release the front plate holding the circuit board. The back of the board in the wheel housing is pictured HERE on Gran Turismo HITL site.

Thats the second easy part out the way.

Now its time to take a deep breath. In the pic on the HITL page, you need to remove the R1 and R2 micro switches and extend the wires to work the paddles on the new wheel. Cut the wires in the middle, and splice new wire in between using solder or bullet connectors.

Second deep breath part. using a hack saw, cut the original boss from the back of the DFGT. This will be placed inside the hub of the new wheel using nuts and bolts. When positioning it inside the new wheel, make sure its dead central. Attach it to the hub using nuts and bolts.(you may have to drill holes for these)

Then fix the front of the DFGT to the new wheel. You will have to drill through the spokes of the wheel in the same places as where the original screws held the front to the DFGT. When fixing into place ensure that the micro switches are pulled through into the area of the paddles. Glue the switches in place, so that they are activated when the paddles are pulled. Then screw the front into place onto the new wheel.

Re attach the new wheel to the base in the reverse order you removed it.

When you first go into GT, you will have to remap the gear change button in wheel setting to the L2 and R2 buttons, and if you done every thing right, happy days.

WARNING.....This mod is very difficult to do, and I had my reservations before I finally decided to do it. It is like an operation, and you do risk destroying your DFGT if you dont get it right, therefore I hold no responsibility over any wrecked wheels that may occur due to this being carried out. This should only be carried out if your brave, and are competent at soldering etc.

However, with the right wheel, and the right amount of prep and planning, it really is a superb mod to do. I only wish I had taken pictures of the process to share.

Unless you can find that rim cheap with the airbag blown or something that isn't a cheap mod. Still, yours turned out sweet, genius idea man!
