Are the Ridge Racer games fun? I have never played any of the 6 that are out yet. Never heard anyone talk about them. What rewards do you get in these games? Do you unlock cars? Is it arcade or sim?
Those screen shots above look quite nice.

100% arcade, no real manufacturers, but one of the best Arcade game series imo

What are your prizes, rewards? The goodies that keep us playing games like GT4. GT4 gives us cars as rewards. :)

Yes plenty of cars. But since they are not licenced it is not that rewarding imo. RR is just fun, the driving expierence is excellent...

I think the only Ridge Racer series game to feature any sort of actual sponsorship is Rage Racer, which included Yokohama and Advan. "R: Racing Evolution" is not a Ridge Racer series game.

First of all, I didn't know Namco was coming up with a Ridge Racer for the PS3. Ridge Racer games had improved driving dynamics since the classic "Ridge Racer Type 4." The game is probably notorious for illegal street racing, only that they try to make it professional. You probably won't even race traditional race courses. Your ride is tuned for racing on the streets in pro-level competition. I'd prefer any Ridge Racer over a game like the Burnout series or anything like that. I'm interested in knowing more about this game. You're going to keep a brother up to date, right?

The best Arcade racing game ever concived IMO, You get the choice btween drift and grip cars with basic engines, and as you progress you get better and more powerfull engines for you car, plus you unlock other cars. Also you unlock newer stages of the city (Ridge city), all the tracks are based around the city and get more and more technicle as you go through the game plus you can winn mirror and backwards and mirror backwards versions of them too.

Also you unlock differetn types of games from race series and time trials.

you get (in Ridge Racer 5)

Grand Prix
Standard class
First GP: regular

Extra class
First GP: Regular
Second GP: Sudden Death
Third GP: Reverse
Fourth GP: Oval

you also get

Duel: you race against special cars with huge advantages in either power, grip or drift.

Time Attack: standard stuff

Free run: Standard stuff

You also get an endurance 99lap race at the end, plus if you drive over 1000Km you unlock the Pac man car race. All in all its a great game worthy of anyones collection, but this is just RR5 there are other RR games on PS1 and the 360.

Sounds similar to Kaido Battle a little. I liked KB2 a lot. I might have to rent one of the RR games some time to check it out. Mabey after I get further in Toca Race driver 3. RIght now thats the only race game I am playing.
Its not like Tokyo extreme racer is it? I tried to play that game twice and just did not like it. I bet I played TXR for at least 5-8 hours total and didnt like it.

Oh not at all. Kaido Battle is a simulation compared to Ridge Racer. Tokyo Xtreme Racer aswell.
Ridge Racer : you don't lose speed while you drift, you can even do 360's with your car, drifting will get you turboboost, some cars go 0-120 mph in 3 seconds or so...

You might want to check this out. Just watch the video review or some gameplay footage and you'll get a good impression what to expect from RR7

Oh ok that sounds closer to the Burnout series. I really really liked the burnout games too. Burnout 2 and 3 were my favorite.

I ahve to say, looking a RR6 isn't convincing me, the graphics look okay, but some of the car's in the game are just plain stupid, there's a hover craft, some futuristic tripod type machine, they're stupid vehicles that even though RR is a fictional game, ruin the effect for me. I hope they don't go overboard with the vehicle designs for RR7. That said there's 200 car's or more expected in RR7 so if a couple are stupid, I can live with that.

Well Live its something I've grown to live with with the dissapointing bonus cars in RR for PSP. can you say PAC man in a propeller powered car?

RR6's graphics are not mid blowing but they arener bad either.

I think Ridge Racer 6 seemed a bit too futuristic to me. That coming from a guy who raced the Lizard Nightmare (RR Type 4), Assoulto(?) Vulcano (RRT4), the Rivelta Crinale (RRV), and the Kamata Angelus (RRV). The series almost always had these outlandish vehicles you could race. The most outlandish in "Ridge Racer Type 4" is hands-down... Terrazi. Their vehicles were completely strange looking and even interesting. The Terrazi Starlight (a car modeled like a 1960s F1 race car) was certainly memorable.

The cars aren't real, but you can almost piece together elements from cars to come up with this unique model. For example, take the Danver Toreador in Ridge Racer V. This car looks more like a 1995-1998 Ford Mustang on the sides with the side vent, then it has taillights like the 1999 Subaru Impreza, and I can't remember the headlight resemblance too well. But some cars in Ridge Racer games just look like pieces and styles of past cars. There was even a car in RR Type 4 which can be thought of as a closed-cockpit Ferrari 333SP.

I think this should be old school Ridge Racer, only more futuristic. I don't want Ridge Racer to end up being like WipeOut, now. Don't overkill the futuristic theme like San Francisco Rush 2049 did.

I know what you mean JohnBM01, and imo that is because of the NOS and the light effects while using it. On the one hand I enjoy that feature, since it is a tactical element, on the other hand, as you pointed out, it is another step towards Wipeout and F-zero....

I like the added nitrous and its visual effects, until the cars fly i dont see any resemblense to wipeout or F zero. And RR4 does have the coolest cars in the series followed by RR for psp/RR6

Ahhhh, that car was inspired by the GTR-Concept. Awsome. So far it looks the same as RR6 in these screens. The car customizing is what sets it apart from RR6. I need a little more to convince me of a launch purchase though.

Yep I was just thinking that, the front end anyway, the rear is more like a Ferrari with thoes tail lights.

I love the way ridge racer takes some of the best body styles from top class sports cars and melds them together to make some wacky and beautiful cars..... that coupled with the manufacturer names and logos..... namco should be like pininfarina and style some real life cars! I remember the Rivelta that was the main car in Ridge Racer 5... I loved that sleek look...:sly:

nice pics. Prob wont buy this game coz i'll be putting my time into a GT tittle if there is one. hehe.

one thing i'm glad to see (finally) is developers actually using the resolution available when it comes to menu's. FINALLY!! I'm still a bit disapointed that the menu's in GTHD are still low rez dodgey arse things (take a look at some text thats on the HUD and how low rez it is.. .i want nice crisp text ... its only an overlay ffs!). Granted we have no idea whats what with that but still... i'm hopeing they make them nice like the menu's we've seen with the bikes in them. :) /end rant :P

Recent pictures posted in either the latest Official PlayStation Magazine or the latest EGM had an interview with the Namco team. Some of the things they talked about was about what to expect for this game as well as a little of what they believe in. People completely oppose having to race the Nürburgring Nordschleife can appreciate what Namco said. The goal for Namco was to come up with tracks that take about 1:30 or so to clear. They believed that much longer tracks only results in disinterest from RR gamers. Longest track in Ridge Racer game I can recall is doing Bayside Line (Ridge Racer V). That was about 1:45 to 2:10 to clear. I normally raced that track to the tune of that one Mad Capsule Markets tune. I forget the name of it. It's funny how I can't race it at night in the Grand Prix races.

I agree that the Ridge Racer series does some of the best work of taking real cars and piecing them together to make awesome automobiles. That's granted that the cars are real, not like some of those hyper-futuristic automobiles in Ridge Racer 6. They do a much better job than the cars EA and Criterion do in intentionally uglying up cars so that they look even better wrecked. The FA Racing deal here in print looks awesome. The pictures in Post #46 (by Solid Lifters look like what I've recently seen in print. I didn't actually notice the difference between the three cars in one of the pictures at first. But I noted differences in customization. Take the first car for instance. It looks just about regular. The middle car has an assortment of bumper and wing parts. It looks more like a legit GT race car. The car on the right looks a bit more like a tuner. I'll admit that customization hasn't really been a plus for the series. Namco wants to make modifying these cars as a huge part of the fun of this game. I liked making my own team colors for pre-made cars in Ridge Racer V. My usual scheme was dark blue/royal blue/yellow (or gold) in the game. My scheme is sort of inspired by Subaru with the blue cars and Stars of Pleiades design. Only that my design is more of a nighttime design. I consider star clusters as a big part of my inspiration. But whatever Namco provides, I'll be sure to come up with a design just as wonderful as my conceptual scheme.

The article also talked about something I haven't really realized. There have been over four Ridge Racer titles for the PlayStation 1 (Ridge Racer Classic*, Ridge Racer Revolution, Rage Racer*, and Ridge Racer Type 4*). But on the PlayStation 2, there have been a grand total of... ONE Ridge Racer Game! Namco didn't even make a version of Ridge Racer 6 for the PS2. Ridge Racers probably won't even get PS2 love like what "GTA: Liberty City Stories" did for PS2 gamers. So you could say that Ridge Racer 7 was a long-time coming for PlayStation gamers of the classic series.

NOTE: The asterisks (*) noted games in the series I've actually played or owned.

I would sure love to take Ridge Racer 7 for a spin. I actually found the deep blue skies to be very wonderful in Ridge Racer 5 when racing around Ridge City. The other usual suspect in the game are cheap plugs of past Namco games. To my extent, only Rage Racer was the only game in the Ridge Racer series to feature actual sponsors. The game featured Yokohama and Advan. Even my team logo featured the world background and Advan.

Only three tracks are there in that post. The one with the cascading waterfalls reminds me of "Wonderhill" or "Heaven and Hell" from RRT4. The Amazonian-type level looks amazing in its own right. The series is sort of evolving in tracks by racing in more than just cities. This sort of locale will help enhance the action away from the city. I'm looking for the city locales to be just as sharp as in most other titles.

This should be a great title. It's certainly a reason to get the PS3 when it and RR7 comes to stores.

Take a look at this and its pictures. Some new ones were added last week or two weeks ago:

http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/driving/ridgeracer7/screenindex.html

Other cars are actually featured in this one. This even includes some similar models from Ridge Racer 6. RR6 is an XBOX360 exclusive, so if you haven't played or seen it, here's a link for you courtesy of Gamespot: { http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/driving/ridgeracer6/screenindex.html?sid=6136790&q=Ridge Racer 6 }. Among newer cars are the #765 Phantomile car, a #67 Terrazi that looks like a Caterham Super Seven, a #168 Klonoa hatchback with Volvo cues, a #161 Pac-Man car, a beautiful #163 car done up in a dark purple color, and many more. You can be the judge as to how this model compares to Ridge Racer 6.

I haven't played RR since RR4. To me it looks good. It looks like there should be enough variety in the cars. I remember RR4 different have enough variety in their cars. But it was so much fun. Especially the drift cars. Whenever I get the PS3 I'll probably get RR7.

I've been a fan of the Ridge Racer series for a long time. I do feel pretty subdued that there hasn't been a true Ridge Racer game for the PS2 since Ridge Racer V. I still enjoy RRV to this day, but just sad that there hasn't been another Ridge Racer game for the PS2 even since the PS1 had over four RR titles. I do know that "R: Racing Evolution" was more hit than miss. That's why I say that it wasn't a true Ridge Racer game. A true Ridge Racer game had electronica or something funky or damned annoying (like "Rotterdam Nation" in Ridge Racer Classic). I still want to play "R: Racing Evolution" though. This even if someone had a hissy fit that an American race car sounds like a blender and not an American car (the comment was on the Corvette C5-R in the game). I'd say this to Namco in terms of getting a Ridge Racer to a PlayStation console in a while:

ABOUT DAMNED TIME!!!

(thank: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cars_in_the_Ridge_Racer_series for the spellings of cars in this paragraph.)

I can recall that the first real customization in the series came in Rage Racer (since I haven't played RR Revolution). You could upgrade the performance of cars in Rage Racer by simply paying to tune up the car. Some of the more advanced cars in the game (preferably past Level 3) had only Manual Transmissions. So the best car to work with is the one you first get- the Gnade Esperanza(?). As plain as it may look, it's one of the easiest-driving cars in the game other than one of the Age Solo cars. I'm even tempted to picking up the Assoluto Fatalita in the game since it's a fast machine. More powerful than that was the Assoluto Ghepardo. The customization continued in Ridge Racer Type 4. But instead of purchasing tune-ups, you had to work with a certain bunch of cars. If you aren't all that good, you don't get the more advanced muscle. The customization in this game was actually quite weak. You can't use cars you won in any Grand Prix action. So if you had a Terrazi Starlight with a decal of Reiko Nagase (fictional race queen in the RR series), you'll only able to use it in Versus, Time Attack, and against bonus cars. I think Namco will make this department shine and shine lovingly.

Ridge Racer 7 is no longer a dream... it's out in stores and ready for your hands to grab the Sixaxis and tear ass all through Ridge State. Here is a gamespot.com link with loads of Ridge Racer 7 pictures for you. The latest pictures are first:

http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/driving/ridgeracer7/screenindex.html

As I read, all or most of Ridge Racer 7's tracks came from the XBOX-exclusive Ridge Racer 6. So most of the tracks have that futuristic touch to them. I have yet to play this game. But from pictures that I've seen... it is beautiful. Haven't seen such a lovely Ridge Racer game since Ridge Racer Type 4. Namco Bandai (the new group, apparentely) kept it real with this title. It seems like old-school Ridge Racer with a new-school twist. All the customization seems completely fluid and amazing. The tracks look amazing. Take a look at Rave City Riverfront (or whatever it's called). It is like a combination of Las Vegas and New York City with a little Tokyo mixed in. I'm honestly in love with this package. This may be the most beautiful Ridge Racer game of all time. I still had my fears that this futuristic model for the Ridge Racer will ruin the series and make it more like F-Zero or the WipeOut series (which I respect). I still need to play this game to see how the gameplay aspect holds up. There are even some of the very outlandish and futuristic vehicles in RR7. So give that site a look.

You can be the judge as to which next-gen Ridge Racer is better in looks and even playability:

(RR7) http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/driving/ridgeracer7/screenindex.html

vs.

(RR6) http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/driving/ridgeracer6/screenindex.html
