Riding the Rails...

With the whole Heathrow terrorism fiasco, my parents decided that our summer vacation to Colorado would be better by train. Thing is, I've only been on a train two or three times before in my life, and those were both really short rides.

So what can I expect, GTP? Any tips for a train ride I should know about? Any crazy stories? I'd love to hear 'em, as I'll be riding across Arizona this time tomorrow. :)

Bring a laptop, mp3 player, portable dvd player, magazines, book, or something similar to keep yourself entertained.

So how long is your train ride? Across "arizona" means diddly squat to me.

Bring a digital camera. Dont get scared when the train starts to lurch and everyone is falling out of their seats. If some Mexican guy named 'El Diablo' comes and terrorizes you, give him a tootsie roll and he'll leave you alone... wait, wrong story.

Basically, yeah, what Integra said. I also bring a digicam to take pictures

I'm taking the Pacific Surfliner from Irvine, CA to Los Angeles, then the Southwest Chief from L.A. to Santa Fe, NM. I'll spend a night in Santa Fe, then drive to Denver, CO the next day. Same thing on the way back.

Santa Fe? You MUST bring a digicam! I drove cross country from NY to Cali when moving a few weeks ago, and Santa Fe is beautiful! The sunsets, with the pink sky and purple mountains... stunning!!!

Digicam: Check. I'll use my dad's (and maybe upload some to GTP, who knows?) 👍

Don't worry if there is an earthquake and the rail on one side bends out of shape, Superman will replace the rail with himself so that the train will pass over like normal. :)

Trains are great though, really smooth ride. 👍

Have a great trip. :p

Source, please. I never hear of train wrecks here.

As for what to expect? If you going through northern AZ, like I'd expect, it'll be boring as hell. Just a bunch of indian reservations and whatnot. If you have a PSP or Gameboy or something, you better bring it.

You should come down to the Valley, as long as you stay to the north-northwest of it, it's beautiful, and high-class cars are more common than cacti in Scottsdale. And you have killer sunsets every evening that are worthy of desktop wallpapers.

And IMO, Santa Fe is bleh. Just like the rest of New Mexico.

Aslong as the train doesn't go through New Jersey you'll be right. ;)
