After experimenting for a while, I think I'm finally getting close to perfecting the rings to go around a planet.

Is there any way for you to cast the planet's shadow on the rings? It would be nearly perfect then. Other than that, that looks great.

OA

You could probably use that ring technique to make some pretty sweet nebulas. ;)

Nice work.

I haven't tried the shadow yet although I agree it would be the final touch. I have a few ideas on how to do it though.

Thanks both of you.

I wish you could make decent money doing this stuff because I really enjoy it.

I love how you lighted the planet, in fact -- that's what impressed me the most about your other work too.

I just made this, inspired by you. :D This stuff's cool lookin' and easy. Sometimes it's a pain in the ass though.

I'm kind of pissed becasue the picture I said I'd post is saved on a CD in Photoshop format so I could bring it to work and finish it here. But this computer is such a P.O.S. I can even open it. Gr. Oh well. Maybe tonight then.

 Had to laugh at that one.... Everyone would love to make decent money doing something that you love to do. If it's something where you can loose hours/days while your doing it, you probably really enjoy it. But let me ask you this.... If your making these at work, arn't you getting paid decent money for doing it? (assuming you get paid decent money)

 , we're all on the quest for making decent money doing what we love to do.

~Peace, oh and lookin' good.

Nasa has a very cool image gallery of their own. Though I can't find the entire index on the current page ...

edit: nevermind - click Archive at the bottom and keep clicking previous

I updated the link to try and deal with some anti-aliasing problems pointed out by Angel o Death. I also ended up changing them a bit.

And thanks for the comments everybody :)

I tried making a meteorite. I wish I could remember what I did, though. I just kept messing with it until it looked right to me. The planet is just there for kicks.

You have a point there. But it would be great to do it professionally, and get paid to get better at it, instead of having to sneak around and close it all up every time my boss walks by. Also my work computer is mot meant for graphics. You wouldn't believe how often I get "could not complete... because the scratch disks are full". Then I end up having to save and close Photoshop, open it back up, and I can do a few more things befoe it happens again. Occasionally it'll tell me it can't save it becasue the disk is full. That really sucks because I loose everything since the last save. One time the entire file disappeared.

I've been needing a career change and so I've been in the process of choosing what to. Computer science is attractive to me but there's so much catch up for me, especially in math. But when I see what I can do with no formal training in graphics, and really enjoying myself, I think I ought to pursure computer graphic arts. Funny thing is, when I started college in 1987 my original major was graphic arts. Then I decided to be some intellectual, or something, and got a worthless degree. Looks like I may have come full circle.

bla bla bla . . .

 Nice, you really have a knack for this space stuff hey.

You shouldn't have wiped out a hole section of the rings, just made the shadow section of the rings darker than the other. But still, nice! :)

I think you should visit deviantART and sell your stuff!
