(forgive me for spellin errors im typing out of rage!and maddness at the people who hate gta because its violent)! why do the news people and the lawyer type people have to be so mean to gta?!

According to the Official Playstation Magazine, the following is what happens in the process of choosing a rating for a game.

The ESRB (Entertainment Software Rating Board) asks for the publishers of a game to film the most violent parts of the game they want rated. Then the ESRB asks for volunteers (mostly parents, teachers, and the like) to view it. With a checklist at hand, each person must check off items that describe it (such as excessive gore, language etc.). The ESRB compares these results with the rating criteria of what is considered a T-rated game, M-Rated game and such before figuring out which rating best fits the game.

The game must be 100% complete when it gets an ESRB rating or else there can be "serious concequences". This is so the publishers cannot change things or add things at the last minute to fool the raters.

I hope this has helped :)

I don't know what that was in reply to, but thanks.

Ahh I see, so the game is 100% complete. Excellent. Looking forward to it. The official release date in the US is October 26th now for anyone who is still wondering. I'm pretty sure it is October 29th for Europe. Not so sure about Australia. Early November I suspect.

EDIT: After a little bit of research, I found out that the release date for Australia is now November 15th. :( Not nice. I'll still be running the record book, though, just someone will have to send me a list of all the categories.

i think anyone who plays a video game, shoots a few people and then gets the idea its o.k to shoot people in real life had mental issues in the first place, and its the parents fault for lettikng the kids play this game im 15 and have been playing gta games since i got a playstation thanks to my brother and it hasnt effected me what so ever
I know that its not real and not o.k to harm someone especially innocent people.and im going to bring up a controvertian thing, i am canadian, we dont have guns eisily available and i cant even think of a time i heard of a shooting in a public place. but there are cases, like in a city not far from me. in missisauga at a mall called square 1 a man was pulled out of his car and stabbed multiple times in the stomach this man didnt even know the guy who he was stabing, sadly the innocent 18 year old man died on the scene. what im saying is canada is safer there are violent acts.....but not nearly as much as america has, we have on average 150 murders by guns, but america more than 11,500 a year. lond live canada the home of the free & peaceful citizens.

Well I live in Australia. We play Knifey-Spooney.

I just hate when people blame games. They are nothing but cowards. Take it like a man.

Off topic, but you can't directly compare the number of gun crimes between countries with such huge populations differences as Canada and the US. The US has far more people than Canada so you have to make allowances for that.

As to all this daft controversy. I can kinda see where some people are coming from. Vice City is very different from the FPS games mentioned on this thread because if you're playing Medal of Honour/Quake/Goldeneye then the object is to kill Nazi/alien/zombie/terrorist scum. Yet in Vice City, the game is full of innocent bystanders that you can slaughter by the truckload. So it's not really a fair comparison.

Having said all that, it's an adult game aimed at an adult market so it should be freely available for adults to buy and play. It's not Rockstar's fault if underage people get their hands on it. If anything, their parents should be at least questioned about why their kids had the game in the first place. They should be supervising the kind of games/videos/websites or whatever their kids are using.

And I'm not at all convinced that video games actually encourage people to commit these kind of murders. Anyone who would shoot someone because of something they see in a video game has obviously got an unbalanced and dangerous personality to begin with.

Should we shield everyone from everything because nutters pick up crazy ideas from what they read, watch and hear?

I think some of these game and film ratings have gone over the top. I can understand if something contains violence and sex it being put on the cover so parents know whether or not they think it's suitable for younger people, but I saw a video cover that amongst the list of things in the film like nudity, bad language etc. was "thematic elements". WTF? Oh no, we can't rent this film for little Johnny, it's got thematic elements! I also saw a reference to "mild language" on a movie poster. What the hell is mild language and who's up in arms about it? Doesn't mild mean it's okay and nothing to worry about? Surely they're meant to be warning parents about BAD things in the film.

edit: I've just done a quick google search and found a cinema which had parental guidance suggested for Aliens vs. Predator because as well as the horror and violence and gore it had SLIME. Imagine how seeing slime might warp some unsuspecting youngsters's mind!

lmao knifey spooney
"you call that a knife? This is a knife!!"
"thats not a knife thats a spoon"
"Ahah i see youve played knifey spooney before." lol i forgot about that "the water goes all clockwise it does."

It does, too!

What would slime do to someone? I love some of those ratings. "Intense Situations of Peril"...

to kieranmurphy what u said about population the united states population is 2 and a half the population of canada so i will multiply ours by 3, thats 450 gun murders that is nothing at all compared to the states. los angeles pull 90 bodies out of one river a month the murder rate in L.A is so massive Los Angelese doesnt know the number of people murdered, i am glad to live in canada and will be living in japan for a few years then im 21 and there rate in japan is 63 people a year they have a bigger population and most violent games come from japan, how about china, only 700 a year and they have a population that consist of billions, so there:crazy:

The population of the US is about 9 times that of Canada, not 2.5 times. I'm not saying the murder in the US isn't much higher, I'm just saying that it's disingenuous to compare the raw number of gun murders between two countries with such huge population differences.

los angeles pull 90 bodies out of one river a month the murder rate in L.A is so massive Los Angelese doesnt know the number of people murdered,
http://www.usatoday.com/news/2002-12-16-homicide-chart.htm
According to the above table, the amount of murder in Los Angeles in 2002 was 627. They seem to know exactly what the number of homicides is. It's about 50 or so a month. And you're telling me they find 90 in a single river per month? I don't believe that for a second. Where did you here that? I think that even in the late 80s/early 90s when gang violence in LA was at it's worst, the murder rate never went over 90 a month, never mind 90 bodies dumped in a single river per month.

i am glad to live in canada and will be living in japan for a few years then im 21 and there rate in japan is 63 people a year they have a bigger population and most violent games come from japan, how about china, only 700 a year and they have a population that consist of billions, so there:crazy:
I'm not trying to defend gun ownership or claim that the murder rate in the USA isn't worse than most other developed countries. Heck, I'm from Ireland, I've no need to defend the crime rate in America. I'm just saying that you can't even start to argue a case properly without correct facts and relevant statistics at your disposal.

But maybe there's too much slime, mild language and thematic elements in US movies. I reckon that's what causes so much violent crime there. :dopey:

buh those movies are view all around the world. I acidently downloaded french version of the fast and the furious, theres a difference in the french here in canada known as quebequis and the french in the movie was france the country french lol dont know the proper name for there french language.multiplied by 9 is 1350 compared to the states its still amazing and im glad we have less of a population, we are the 2nd biggest country in the world so it gives is a lot more room.

I've been thinking, you can just see the lawsuits rolling in for this game: "My son and his friends learnt to do drive-bys from your game, and then he flunked out of school."

I can just hear Lazlow: "Well how are you gonna learn to drive-by at school, Mum?"

But you can see the increase in drive-by shootings happening. Really makes me mad. Why can't people just play a damn game, and if they do a drive-by or whatever, take it like a man.

1. You got enjoyment out of that game, so if you sue them you ain't gonna play anymore, son.
2. You decided to do it, you little prick.

'Nuff said.

OK....first of all, if you're going to kill someone copy a clever way of killing someone -- like you'd see in Law and Order -- not just go up to someone and drive-by them like you'd do in Vice City.

second -- IF you're stupid enough to drive-by someone like you saw in a game, it was YOU that was stupid enough to do it, the game didn't kill anyone, rockstar didn't kill anyone, you did.

third -- i'm tired and can't be bothered argueing...

And Food Poisoned.

That Sniper guy was trying to use a clever way, too. But I don't think these guys realise that the Cops are a little smarter in real life, and they can't clear their wanted level by changing clothes, running into a Pay 'n' Spray or using cheats.

Well more people are blaming Grand Theft Auto. This time, not the suspect, rather he lawyer that sued Rockstar over Manhunt a while ago.

This is From GTAGaming.com:
We've reported on the exploits of Florida lawyer Jack Thompson in the past, his reaction to the Manhunt allegations of the summer and appearance on BBC Frontline Scotland provided some interesting debate through our comments system and forums. This time, Thompson has linked the Grand Theft Auto series to a vicious plot cooked up by a sixteen-year-old boy in Massachussetts, in which he planned to kill innocent people and "mow down" those who tried to assist.

Jack Thompson
The technique of killing civilians and then first-responders when they get there is the primary scenario to win in all the Grand Theft Auto games, they are killing simulators actually used by gangs.

The teenager in question, Tobin Kerns, allegedly owns copies of Grand Theft Auto titles and plays them regularly. He has been charged with attempting to commit murder and promotion of anarchy.

---------------------------

Luckily Rockstar didn't get touched by this case, although they were still blamed. The mentality and stupidity of some teenagers...

I mean, come on...he wanted to "Mow Down" anyone who opposed him? I hate these stupid teenagers.

It's a game made to entertain people, not a game made to simulate killing. If it was made to simulate killing a shot in the arm with a sniper wouldn't kill you...

Well the press and those lawyers labelled it a "Killing Simulator". It's clearly a killing game, but not for the purpose of inspiring killings.

But you know how the media is?, they'll blow anything out of proportion to get a story. The adverse effect of this is parents see this and instantly believe the media, without ever witnessing the game to make up there own minds.

Yes, and then poor 14 year olds can't see the horrific violence and hardcore sex scenes that people like you and I take for granted....Anywho, GTA:SA will clearly be much more of a simulator than any of the previous GTA games, but with the amount of things you can do you can't label it as a killing simulator. Sure it does simulate killing, but that isn't all the game is about, the game also simulates driving, eating, swimming, buying clothes, farming and even mowing the lawn. You can't say this is a game that gives players no option but to kill everything they see, like for example Goldeneye, which got no negative reports (at least in terms of violence).

Exactly. Just like in real life, the player is choosing to Kill, which is his fault. He doesn't have to really. Everything is your choice really, the game doesn't direct you into it as such.

The people of "won't SOMEBODY think about the children" mentality see a game like Vice City where people kill innocent strangers, not a game like GoldenEye or Quake or Halo where people kill evil scum aliens or Nazis or terrorists. That's the difference. It's not about whether it's more or less violent than other games, it's the nature of the violence. Some people are getting worked up because it does allow you to simulate killing innocent people. The most violent first person shooters out there generally involve you against all sorts of evil nasties, there's no innocent bystanders to kill.

I think it's all BS anyway.

And I still can't figure out what the hell the Aussie authorites were thinking about when they decided to allow the game to be sold in the country but removed the sex with hookers thing. Oh, I see, it's okay to run over people in a tank, to put a bomb in a car and explode it in rush hour traffic, to snipe the heads of innocent civilians, to take an assault helicopter and gun down sunbathers on the beach, to slaughter disco dancers with a minigun etc. etc. BUT YOU CAN'T HAVE SEX WITH A PROSTITUTE! Oh no that would be awful. And you can kill the prostitute as well! We can't have that. We can have you slaughter the dancers in the night club or the sunbathers on the beach, but we can't have you killing hookers. Oh no.

KM.

No, the Hookers are in the game, you just can't have sex with them. So basically you can kill them, but not have sex with them. I also laughed at the editing here.
