"Rules of the road" do people follow them?

I've seen some interesting overtakes.

Yesterday, sat on my schoolbus we stopped to pick someone up where there was no lay-by. Behind us was a Corsa, complete with bodykit, spoiler, and an exhaust bigger than my head. The driver then decided to do a super cool move to show of his 'Super-quick' car, and pulled out, when a double decker bus was coming at 40mph+ the other way. I heard a loud farting noise, presumably the Corsa driver flooring it. He got halfway past my bus, and then squeezed in as tightly as he could. The bus broke and tried to go wide, practically demolishing a hedge in the process. The Corsa was in a Bus sandwich for a brief moment, but came out with his car, and even mirrors unscathed...

We were coming back from the drag strip at midnight, and here's this '02 Monte Carlo driving on the wrong freakin side of the highway. So of course we called 911. Then a HUGE pack of cars came toward the Monte. I knew it was gonna crash, but they pulled into the median at the right time and they got the car stuck. And come to find out, it was a car full of teenagers. Typical.

[Oldest joke in the book]

I heard on the news that there was a car driving the wrong way up the M1. Since my wife was driving home on the M1, I called her to let her know.

"One?" she said. "There's bloody hundreds of them!".

I don't get it. :dunce:

She was the one driving the wrong way, but didn't know so she thought all the other cars were driving the wrong way..?

Oh right. I understand.

I did see one guy and his girlfriend try to literally ram, brake test, and swerve block my Dad on the motorway in their people carrier. My Dad was winding them up and being stubborn which is wrong of course, but it's still amazing how people can be so reckless with their cars at that speed. We was in a fast car at the time so it wasn't a problem to lose them when they weren't swerving across lanes to block us but they were quite relentless so they kept catching up. Eventually we managed to let them get along side and then just braked and went up a sliproad before they could react.

I been reading all the post and some of the thing people do is just crazy.
When I'm driving I also go over the speed limit so I never so that as a problem but I also follow all other rules. And the thing with people brake checking you is most annoying thing very specially when they are driving slow.
I don't find driving the wrong way funny at all.

I'm a full-on indicator-nazi. I hate people not using them. If the indicator stalks had been at the centre of a Rubiks cube, fair enough. They're not. I do go out of my way to not let non-indicators out if I can help it.

You will wait, you thoughtless cur.

The irony

I find people who overuse their indicators, havent got a clue where they are going.

Then you have taxi drivers, who must have had their indicator stalks removed.

Last week I saw a driver brake checking a tailgater. It wasn't a small brake check, tires were smoking.

This is my gripe too, but sometimes I want the guy behind me to rear end me so
I can get a new car out of it, or good amount of money to put down for a new car.

I was once tailgated at non-admittable speeds on the outside lane of the M6 by a Moron in a white Range Rover, possibly 2 metres off my rear bumper. I was doing my best to clear the traffic in the middle lane to pull back in, but since I was driving my mums gutless Toyota at the time (maybe 110mph top speed) I literally couldn't do anything more. I would have loved to have pitched some of the climbing chalk we had in the car out of the sunroof for him to deal with, but that would not have been appropriate!

I know the law says if you rear end someone you are at fault, but if someone brake checked that would make them at fault, right?

No. Although brake-checking is beyond stupid, you should never be close enough to them for it to affect you. If you are then you wouldn't be prepared to avoid an accident in an emergency stop, which is fairly basic driving skills.

Tailgate me and I'll simply make sure I've got enough braking distance to stop both our cars without you finishing inside me.

"Rules of the road" are nice to know, but in reality they don't mean a huge amount. Presume nothing on the roads and that'll keep you safe the majority of the time.

I know the law says if you rear end someone you are at fault, but if someone brake checked that would make them at fault, right?

No bcause you would had to be at a safe following distance so even if they brake you would have time to react. Unless you had a dash cam and recorded them brake checking you.

That wouldn't work because you should still be a safe distance from them, regardless of whether they are brake checking you or turning in to a dragon.

I know right.
Don't you just hate it when you are just driving along and the car infront of you suddenly morphs into a mideval fire breathing reptile?

Oh god that gives me an idea. An awful brilliant idea. Put the ignition key slot/start button...behind an unsolved Rubik cube. Anyone not smart enough to solve it will have to take public transport/taxi/bicycle.

That would be the Zonda F.

Luckily for me I've never had the problems of tailgaters since my L-plates *usually* deter people from doing it to me. The only rule that I break from time to time is coming to a complete stop at stop signs, but other than this I usually don't go over this. I've seen some ridiculous manoeuvres pulled off by people to avoid me though, even if I'm travelling on the speed limit and taking corners at lively speeds. Once, some guy was ballsy enough to attempt to undertake me on a parking lane where there was about a 100m gap, while travelling at around 60km/h. Needless to say it did scare the **** out of me because I had to essentially dodge the idiot as he pulled in right infront of my car. There's a perfectly reasonable lane on the right of me to overtake (and legal), was it really necessary to do this? Another one that ticks me off is the use of indicators at roundabouts, you cannot predict when the P-plater in a Barina drives straight into the roundabout and completely disregards everyone in it and decides not to indicate either.

Another antic that gets to me is when there's other L-platers who are driving on roads that have a limit of say, 80km/h and are travelling 30-40. You clearly cannot drive confidently yet, why the hell are you going half the speed limit here, go and learn to drive in the backstreets first. It only leads to some dangerous overtaking (I must admit, I've done it too once) and makes peoples blood boil.

I admit I may tailgate learners but i do tend to do it most when they don't merge left on the freeway.

But I do hate it when some idiot doesn't indicate on round a bouts, so I don't know if i should give way or not.

I don't really blame you for tailgating learners, I personally know how incredibly annoying it is when a white Corolla with L-plates on cuts in front of you and drives at half the speed limit down the road. However, it annoys me that people are obviously taking my L-plates for granted; they're doing it only because of the L-plates. I drive just fine along with everyone else on the road and if anything I'm usually moving around quicker than most of the unattentive (read: texters; mobile phones etc.) and also the other 'full licensed' people who I see on the road on a day to day basis. I have hundreds of hours of driving experience on my learners (I reached 120 hours in almost the first month of driving) and I've been driving since last year September. The amount of **** I see (mostly by full licensed drivers) is just ridiculous.

for the tailgators:
- Either get a faster car ;)
- Drive really slow to piss them of futher
- Use the windshield water fountain. I have one of mine which actually jets over my car and puts everything on the car behind me.
That generally calms them down, especially in a corner

On the thread subject.
I try to respect it. Only speed is sometimes a problem.
the worst driver for me are those who can't ******* drive. Not that they drive fast, but simply can't drive: really slow, breaking without any purpose, using turnabouts wrong, using indicators wrong or not using at all. Tying SMS on the phone, being on the phone, driving drunk, not able to drive in a strait line, cutting corners when there is oncoming traffic.....

All that is equal or worse to my speed overstepping within the tolerance

(one of the) Worse experience I had: In a forest on a tight and dangerous road, there was an oldie driving his big merc really slowly. In one of the only places where it is actually save to pass by for a few hundert meters, I took my chance, then this dork starts accelerating too. Making it too dangerous to pass. What did i do, knowing that for the next 10km he had only one way to go ? I called the cops. They took us both out at the end of the forest. He got a nice fine and lost some points.

I respect the road rules as much as possible. The only one I'll regularly abuse is the speed limit, but it's for safety reasons. If the speed limit is 55 and you're trundling along at 55 while everyone else on the road is doing 80, it's a lot safer to stay with the flow of traffic. So I keep up with the traffic if it's going faster than the speed limit, and this includes doing precisely the speeds I just mentioned, 80 in a 55, on I-95 all the way down the state of Virginia. Under normal circumstances though, I'll stick to 3-4 over the speed limit max.

Do none of these things.

Let people have their anger elsewhere.

WOW! That's insane

I never got it why people get that kind of rage when an accident happend. Already saw people get slapped because they missed the green light.

My method of dealing with a tailgater is to quickly punch the gas pedal.

My gtp is set up to run on the rich side, this paired with my basically city only driving results in enough carbon build up to send a black cloud out the back when I punch the gas.

This is enough to startle the tailgater and they back off. :)
