Saints Row

I played the demo for several hours yesterday. Most of it was really fun but as mentioned above I feel they are trying too hard to be like GTA. It does look a lot better, the cars handle better, the explosions are better, but over all the demo is still a watered down version of GTA. I will still probably buy it because it is fun and I am eager to see how it is online. Hopefully there will be helicopter, planes, and many different vehicles to drive like in GTA.

The demo did have flaws, like:

Public AI not complety smart
Player pyshics looking messed up at times.
Frame rate problems
Bad car handling

But I did like:

How the game play worked at the right times, the police acting smart. Also the sub missions were good, and how some of the missions are great at the right times.

However, I cannot decide if I should get this in 2006, or get it next year guys?

But if I do buy it, one of the reasons will be the online mode.

Well I played the demo before... what I really don't like - just like in San Andres - is this ghetto gangsta yo style ... I just don't like it, it is boring at best, most of the time even anoying. I liked the setting in GTA 3 and especially in Vice City... you know, the classic gangster story ( mafia triades yakuza etc )... So I really don't know if I'll buy this one....

I'm not going to judge it too harshly on the demo alone. However as the game is released next month it'll likely be exactly the same game as the demo suggests.
The AI isn't too bad. Cops and gang members seek cover and run from pipe bombs (I did have a laugh throwing pipe bombs under every car I come accross). Shooting is a little tricky as there's no lock-on but sensitivity can be adjusted and I've become used to it. Car handling varies - some turn on a sixpence others have the turning circle of a yacht. I noticed one or two look like real life models and they do vary from front wheel drive, rear wheel drive and 4 wheel drive (shame there's no bikes - well I assume not).

It does look good, but then there is slowdown as mentioned. For example, I had a massive gun battle with around 8 Police and 7 of my gang members and with the explosions of around three cars blowing up one after the other (thanks to my pipe bombs) the frame rate really dropped low. But this demo may be 4 or more months old so perhaps the game will be a little smoother (though it's unlikely).

I'm happy to give it a go. It does tread a little too much in the footsteps of GTA but then I don't blame them for doing so. I think it'll be fun. I would'nt say great but decent enough.

I didn't know the developers were Volition who made the Red Faction games which I quite enjoyed at the time.

Does anyone know if we will be able to fly at all? Planes, Helicopters, parachuting were all extremely fun in GTA so hopefuly they will play a part in this game. If not then we will have to wait for the game called "Just Cause". It is the similar GTA style of game play but it looks like the scenery will be just like Far Cry. Just Cause is another game I am excited about. Saints row will hold us over until Just Cause comes out. :)

I read on one site with a developers interview that there are no bikes, boats helicopters or planes in Saints Row unfortunately.

On a side note, has anyone else got to the AK yet? It's pretty awesome starting up a big war with the cops have blasting cop cars to smithereens with it.

I am not sure if I want to buy this game or not knowing that. The helicopters, planes, bikes, and boats are all that made GTA have so much replay value. Hmm if I do buy Saints row I will probably trade it back in after I play for a while or after I get most of the achievements.

Excellent find mate! That is extremely easy too. :dopey:
It seems that way too many people, but if you do something wrong, I heard you can crash the demo.

Good luck exploring. I highly advise you walk on the sidewalk as cars glitch in/through the streets. Note that the big city isn't explorable. All it's roads cause you to fall through them.

I downloaded the demo and played for about an hour, and my assessment is that it isn't all that great. I think the game holds a lot of promise, especially with the decent graphics, and fairly tight controls... But thus far I don't really like the story and the way of life it portrays.

It looks like a good game to live up to the GTA standard, but I'm begining to doubt if it is the game for me, as the entire genre has become rather dull.

I'm downloading the demo right now. Anyone know how long I can play the demo? Is there a time limit?
No time limit at all. However if you beat the few missions the demo ends. Go and beat the missions then restart the demo again and just drive around. It is also listed above how to explore the entire demo. You can get past the demo barriers.

I've made this game fun for me :D

I just drive around holding up shops and banging cops and pedestrians with nightsticks, crowbars and shotguns. Its how I get the most fun out of the game and makes me want to play it more

I think I'm just about done with the demo. The missions were alright but too easy since I had the shotgun after I shot and killed an officer. That forgive and forget thing is pretty funny though but game seems a little too easy because all you need is a shotgun pretty much. :indiff:

BTW, those pipe bombs are awesome! 👍

I've heard the NTSC US version is region free, anyway can the people who have the game give it a rating out of 10, what pros and con's it has. Also can you guys sum up the game in 2 words please.

The game is pretty good, I played it today for sometime at my friends house, it's really responsive, but overall it just lacks the polish and what not that I'm familiar with.

I also don't like the constant "shock value" they go for. It's really immature and takes a LOT of character away from the game.

I reckon the multiplayer will not hold up well for a long time, but if I had to buy a GTA style game I would go for GTA instead, which is why I may not buy Saints Row. But I may even just rent it out or ask someone in my family to buy it for me as a Christmas present.

Would you rather have this game, 4800 Xbox points, or Forza 2? I'd rent it if I were you.

Before you posted, I decided to put it down as a rental, now I all to do is wait till Friday for this game.

I played Saints Row for about 3 hours last night and its pretty fun. Its definetly a really watered down version of GTA. I had a lot of fun playing the single player and havent tried the multiplayer yet. I cant see myself playing the game after I beat it. I really dont see any replay value yet but mabey my opinion will change when I play the multiplayer. I would say its a good rental for most of you but dont expect GTA if you buy the game.
I am about 6% and have over 50 vehicles. The insurance fraud missions are my favorite so far. I think I also have about $6,000.
