It would seem that my PS2 has fallen victim to the constant need to read from the San Andreas disc.
It looks like its fried the motor that spins the disc, and has made the game take about 5x as long to load up, and when it does load up throws up constant disc read errors.
Oh well looks like i won't be playing SA much for a while till my PS2 comes back from Sony's warranty claims department.
So gutted!.:indiff:

I feel your pain. Had that happen to me last summer with GT3 🤬

Hopefully it won't be to long getting back to me, the guy said they might only have to make a few adjustments and maybe service the laser. So it could be sweet as and back buy tommorow. i hope!.

I hope that doesn't happen to my PS2.:scared: I've had it since they were out. When they costed $320 (the one with GT3 included)

I'm working on my third in that timespan

I've had mine for 3 and a half years now. But it's knackered. A bunch of games and DVDs I have won't run on it.

But as long as it runs San Andreas I'm happy.

I'm on my 2nd PS2, just got this one after I broke my old one in august trying to adjust the laser power :)

My console seems to be constantly reading the SA disk, but other than that I dont see a sign of trouble.

Yeah i noticed the fact that the PS2 is constantly reading the disc, im guessing alot of peoples playstations will be breaking down in the near future. I think once mine comes back from being fixed i may buy that new pstwo, after christmas, i heard it runs SA quite well, due to an upgraded laser package.

Yeah same problem here. I think our genarations of ps2s are too old and can't read the dual layered dvds that well. I might need to go out and buy another ps2 :( I'll probably call Sony and mention the magic "Disk Read Errors". They'll fix it and it will last about a year or so.

It also stops loading (at the start) at random points. This might be from "over-playing", but the ps2 should be able to hold up.

mine just takes ages!!! to load up, then is unplayable when loaded up. Oh well bring on next thursday, thats when i should get it back.

Same with me I also got the original GT3 bundle PS2

Ive dropped my PS2 acouple times which busted the case and forced the DVD tray open and it wouldnt shut again. After pulling it apart I managed to get it going again and havent had a problem since.

My old-skool PS2 (before the GT3 bundle) is loading & running SA just fine, but skips/statics/usually locks up during the opening movie. If it starts to give me any serious problems, I'm buying another one. I had SA for a week before I could play it, but I couldn't go without it now...

I got a new playstation 2 a month ago and i also get alot of read errors. it`s annoying but oh well that`s just sony for you i guess coz my disc is in perfect condition!

Did you try cleaning the laser off? Very easy to do.
Could you explain? I can't get SA to start!!! I can't get any game to start! All that I hear are a couple of those "spinning disk sounds". After it does load (15 mins.) It loads up the R* animations, and the intro movie, but dies out (and more disk spinning) and stop when you see the SA logo with the different characters behind. It doesn't even get to the loading screen!!! Help!

I think my PS2 is getting ready to go out on me as well... Yesterday during a date with Katie (SA gf), she wanted me to take her dancing, so naturally i did. Anywho, to cut things short, at the start of the dance scene, my PS2 started making huge noises. Sounded like the motor for the laser jamming back and forth trying to read the disc (meanwhile, the game froze up) - After opening the disc tray and getting the "Tray open" error, i closed it and it read a little bit and ran normally. This happened twice. Both times during a dancing date. :\

Dam, My PS2 is dead. 8:58PM on November 8th 2004. It froze at the version screen. and never woke up...:( No SA for a while :(

Mine loads up like normal, but every now and then I'll get the "Cannot read from disc" black screen, but after waiting about 10-20 seconds it plays again. It was making me mad this morning because I would get that screen like every two minutes! Or it would freeze, music would keep playing, then the music would skip, then the screen, then normal play. Anyhow, I was going to buy a new PStwo today before work, but luckily for my old junker back home... EB was all out of them atm. The game is running fine right now, but I think after a bit of playing it may act up again, so I still think I might get a new console... especially since someone above mentioned that the laser is superior to the old PS2s and runs San Andreas much better. :D:tup:

Mine loads up normally, but I got a few disc read errors once and a while, what p!sses me off is that it keeps freezing at this one mission I need to do to get a farther in the game.:banghead:

Thank God mine is fine. First time I got it it took longer then it does now.:) Tough PS2 I got here.

Uh oh! thats exactly what mine did!. Im sure its gotta be the motor wearing out, and not being able to spin fast enough to read the information from the disc. Because when mine stared making a horrible friction, kind of grating sound every time it read from the disc, ( which in this games case is alot) thats when it took ages to load up, about the same time as you stated.
Then it just got worse.
Although it was fine once it had cached?? enough information- for instance doing a race in GT3- but with GTA being the ever changing game it is the PS2 has no time its always reading from the disc.
Maybe a HD loader would prolonge the life of some older PS2's

God, seems so many people's PS2's are dying from San Andreas. Lucky I bought a new one. :sly:

Even my PStwo has had it's tiny tiny skip moments, nothing to worry about though, at all. But that was after like 14 and a half hours of play.

I have never thought of that. What if GT4 has more information then GTA:SA. I don't think my PS2 can handle that wear while changing between GT4 and GTA:SA.:scared: To look on the bright side, a PStwo would be a nice addition, er, replacement to the room.:p

Mine takes longer to load in my save game now that I'm in San Fierro... but I'm sure it take less time to save it... weird huh!?

Otherwise the PS2 is fine.... never had a problem with mine... ever...

I think im gonna go down the road of getting a PStwo, cause i heardthat fixed PS2's don,t last that long, plus the new ones are soo cheap these days.
Yep after christmas definately!.

You're right there. Fixed PS2s don't last very long at all. They will run fine for a little while, then they will just do a sudden turn-around and dump on themselves. Game stores aren't really selling new PS2s, so the PStwo is the way to go.

Just take the 8 or 10 screws off the bottom of the case
Remove the top case.
Remove the 4 very tiny screws from the top of the laser cover
clean laser if there is dust on it-----or----
--grease the track
put back together
I have one of the oldest PS2 and I used to send mine away to get repaired. Finally I bought the flip top cover for it and now I can clean the laser within 2 seconds.
Here is a pic of the flip top that i have Flip top cover

Mine has just started giving me Disc Read Errors during the game.I bought mine the first day that it was available and never had a problem with it untill now. It's not really a big problem, the error screen stays for like 2 sec. and then the game continues. The thing is,it keeps happening every 10 minutes.I'm guessing it's dying slowly and it's time to get a PS Two.

Before spending over $150 why dont you guys try to at least clean it first. It is very easy and I know at least 3 other people who saved thier PS2 by doing this.
I can take pics of the laser if you want.
