San Andreas Disc reading.

I don't think that those disc read errors are generally caused by a dirty laser lens. But I gave it a clean anyway when I had it opened up. The few PS2 fixing guides I've read said that over 90% of PS2 disc reading problems are caused by the laser head shifting slightly out of position. There's a little gear wheel inside the CD drive that allows you to adjust the distance between the lens and disc. You just have to tweak it and try it with discs you know it wouldn't read before until you get it right. I tried 2 differrent settings before I got it to successfully read 2 PS2 games it wouldn't before and 2 DVDs that wouldn't work either. Huzzah! It was really easy.

I see, oh well, i know what i should do if the problem occurs in the future, cheers KM.

If it gives you disc read errors on certain discs and it's out of warranty, then I highly recommend getting a good guide online on how to open it up and fiddle with the gear for the laser position. It takes no more than 10-15 minutes and it's pretty easy. The only thing I had to go out and buy was a precision screwdriver (a local hardware shop had a set of them for €4).

Easy as pie and I can now use a bunch of DVDs and games which had become unreadable by the PS2.

Sony repairs all of the PS2s who have reports of DREs. You mention them, and answer a couple of questions, and you ship it to them at no cost whatsoever. Unless you've broken the warranty sticker, or modded your ps2.

Welp, my playstation is really starting to die.. Err, was.. Anyway, i found that i never even filled out the warranty papers, so i said to hell with it. I cracked open my ps2 and adjusted the laser, cleaned it, cleaned out the case, and it was running fine.. For a while. Then after about.. oh.. One hours play, i turn it off. I come back about 45 mins later to play, and guess what happens within 10minutes of play? San andreas disc read error. So, i waited until today, and i cracked open my ps2 yet again, but it's no better.. The game ran pretty nicely up until i got a 4 star wanted level. And then WHAM. There it was.

My ps2 isnt completely dead, as you can see, so it should be able to play normal games alright, so a friend of mine who doesnt play video games often is going to take it and buy me a new PStwo this upcoming weekend..

I'm rather attached to my PS2, but as of late, i'm sick of the problems. I just sincerely hope that it doesnt die on my friend, because i will feel really bad. But then again i wont feel too bad, because i already told him it had problems.

Beh, anyway, atleast the ps2 held out until about 75% san andreas completion.. :)

That's too bad, but your friend seems either really kind or really silly. Why swap your PS2 for a brand new PStwo when he could just buy a PStwo and save himself the hassle of one that might die on him?

Why ship your PS2 off to Sony and be without it for days or even weeks when you can fix it in 10 minutes yourself?

He's not doing this for himself. He's just a good friend of mine, like an older-brother of sorts. I just tol dhim and he said he'd get one for me as an xmas present since he wont be around for xmas. He said he'd take my old one just for random use around his house or something when hes bored.

Yeah and on average you get it back in about 3 weeks. 👎 I did this for the first 2 PS2 that I got then after that I started repairing them myself and since then I havent had a prob. First 2 were complete crap. Then when I got the 2nd one back smoke started pouring out of it and im not exagerating at all. They said it was a defective PS2. I was not very happy.

Hmm,this problem magically dissapeared.Since last week the DRE's stopped happening.I just cleaned the disc(not that it was dirty/dusty but i did it anyway)and now it runs fine. 👍

Don't get any ideas Blake. Just because we're like brothers, doesn't mean I'm giving you my PStwo! I'll get you something nice for Christmas anyhow. ;)

Yeah im not too sure about that, maybe if your still under warranty that would apply. But to imply that they fix all D.R.E's is incorrect.
But i think its a bit of a money spinner when you conscider its costing me $80 bucks($40 US) to fix my out of warranty ps2, when the prosedure sounds so simple.
Oh well we all fall into the traps sometime in our lives.

Really? I wasn't planning on getting you anything, damnit

erm, just to add something here chaps, im not one hundred percent on this, but it seems to have been the case with all the old gta games and my three previous ps2's.
When you pause the game for long periods of time, like 5 mins in total or ten minutes even, while you get a drink or something, the disc gets scoured by the laser.
the ps2 is reading the same spot on the disc over and over, and it burns the lacquer (varnish) off of the top surface.
You end up with a circular scratch on the disc, and after a while, the ps2 refuses to read it.
i have found that gently cleaning the disc with some multi surface cleaner has reduced the groove and allowed the ps2 to read it again, but in most cases, the gta games just wear out in time.
I cant condone it, but if you go to blockbuster and rent the game, you can always swap it for a disc in better condition.
Not that i would ever do such a thing......

In short, i dont leave mine on pause for longer than a few seconds at a time, while i light a cigarette or something, (or service the missus) i prefer to switch it off, cos i know whats gonna happen if i dont.

Yeah, I've left it paused for hours on end (VC) and I've never had problems. Plus I don't think that's true because the disk is still spinning when the game is paused, you can hear it.

Well, I left mine on pause, all day, and the only break was when I slept. My PS2 just conked out. That's why I now have a PStwo.

Cleaning and regreasing the tracks solves 90% of all PS2 problems and revives most of them. Trust me on that one.

I regret not trying it, as I think that would have been my main problem, but my PS2 was on its way out anyway, so in a way, I'm happy that I bought the PStwo.

That may be the case with older games but this happened to me with my SA disc which for all purposes was brand new!.
This was a PS2 fault not a worn disc as one or two of my older games are in shocking condition and are still redable by my console.

I've left my my GTA 3 on pause for 3 days straight. It never had any problems. I think Blake could vouch for this, as I did it because I used to say my house was in St. Marks, and I would go and stand up at the door, pause, and next time I come to play it I would un-pause and play again. I was young and a little dim, but it never had any problems. The only problems I've had is getting my hours up on Vice City. I left it on for the whole day, and only turned it off when sleeping. I then got problems.

Woooohoooo!.
Finally got my PS2 back last nite, and managed to get into some SA again.
It turns out that it was the laser unit needing to be replaced but thats all good its running sweet now.
All i have to do now is catch up with the gameplay, have'nt finished the story yet lol.

I'm pretty lucky among others that have not had their PS2s breakdown. Mine working fine. Except my controller. I was playing THPS3 and the controller completely went null. So I looked at the connector and one of the 9 prongs were gone.:odd::grumpy:
