Honestly it's good stuff. Reduces load times to about 1/10 their original time. And you're not wearing out your PS2 DVD drive.

Mathematically speaking ...

DVD 1x = 1.385MB/s

PS2's DVD is 4x = 5.54MB/s

Maxtor 120GB gets roughly 20MB/s, which is about four times as fast. The additional speed (and biggest boost) is that the hard drive's seek time is practically nothing - milliseconds - where the CD actually has to move the laser and spind the disk to the right place, which can take a second or two. And if the data you're accessing is not contiguous on the DVD you'll be adding up those seeks in a hurry.

Are you using it for GTA:SA...

You should run some comparison tests to show how quickly stuff loads like the main game... and cutscenes and things like that?

I've not been able to do tests for SA, but VC was incredible. I haven't had much time to play with SA. A friend of mine said the "popups" (things loading in the distance) tend to appear more fluidly and quickly and farther away loading from the hard drive than they do from the DVD.

meh, I bit the bullet and bought a PStwo... it's SOO small! I knew it would be smaller but I had NO idea, I opened up the box and was like :scared: where did it go?! Plus I like to pack up my PS2 and go to my buddy's house or my girlfriends, and now it'll be much easier to take along. Not to mention the fact that I may still clean the laser, grease the tracks on my old PS2 and probably leave it at the GFs house. But anyways, I love it! I kinda wish it wasn't a topload kinda thing, but I'll deal.

Just take the 8 or 10 screws off the bottom of the case
Remove the top case.
Remove the 4 very tiny screws from the top of the laser cover
clean laser if there is dust on it-----or----
--grease the track
put back together
I have one of the oldest PS2 and I used to send mine away to get repaired. Finally I bought the flip top cover for it and now I can clean the laser within 2 seconds.
Here is a pic of the flip top that i have Flip top cover
I would do that now, but im worried that I may screw up my PS2 even more than it is!.
Maybe i will try when i get the PStwo.
Only 7 days to go till i get my playstation back, im suffering some serious SA withdrawls.

Yeah the PStwo is very small. I sized it up to the DVD Case for San Andreas...not much difference. Lol.

You can't use the HDLoader with the PStwo...which really sucks because I was thinking of getting one. I do agree to try cleaning first, I should have, but I'm lazy, and I wanted the PStwo. My PS2 took up alot of space (I have a small room at the moment), and I just liked the look of it. Plus, I know my PS2 is on it's way out for good, all that cleaning would have done with my PS2 would just have prolonged it's death a few months.

I've got a bloody old PS2 and it works fine, I'm suprised it hasn't died, I've taken it overseas many times and I haven't treated it really well it just seems to want to live. Which I'm very happy about :D

Yeah it's odd. It's had so much time playing alot of games. You've played so much GTA 2, GTA 3, GTA: Vice City, GT3, Tekken Tag Tournament, Midnight Club 2, etc etc etc. I expected yours to go down the same track as these other people's have, and just conk out.

I respect your PS2 Blake. It seems to be the strongest damn PS2 around. You've had it since it first came out, pretty much.

Well since were going on the topic of the PS two. Has anyone played backed up games on it or imported games????????

I bought mine on October 30th 2001. The sheer amount of hours I put in to GT3, not to mention my 14 completions of Vice City, and the fact I take it to work every Wednesday in a holdall, must make it one of the hardiest PS2s on Earth.

The other two were bought for £35 and £37.50 respectively on eBay and have had no problems since being repaired.

Why do you take it to work every Wednesday?

To play the kids at GT3.

The number of them who say they're going to beat me (most of them) compared to the number that actually do (none) is quite amusing.

The best kid I've raced was 14 seconds down after three laps of Trial Mountain in stock P001s.

Where abouts do you work. Sounds like a good place.

Well, he said his PS2 had survived a lot, including being transported to and from work once a week, so someone asked why he took it to and from work and he answered.

A school in the South-east. My head of department is a car nut.

Hint: Read a thread before asking stupid questions. The question posed was a whole ONE POST above mine.

Yeah, the day it dies will be a sad day. :(

GODDAMNED PS2!

It's 7:30am and I can't sleep so I thought I'd play San Andreas for a couple of hours and go back to bed.

So I power it up and

. . . . DISC READ ERROR . . .

I cleaned the disc but same thing again. I knew it was coming. More and more discs have been rejected in recently.

And I'll be ****ed if I'm paying €50 to some snotty 17 year kid in my local Sony dealer to fix it for me.

I've found instructions how to fix it and the only thing I'm missing is a small enough screwdriver to remove the CD tray cover. I'll have to pick one up later when the local hardware store opens.

Any last minute advice from anyone who has successfully fixed one before I permanently break it and electrocute myself in the process?

That sucks man. Maybe it's for the better SA gets returned now. I'm now starting to think/realize my PS2 may die on me after I play GT4 and SA over Christmas Vacation.:( You sometimes become attached to your ol' PS2.:(

Man that sucks, good luck with the fix, hope you don't need to get a new one, at least not for a while.

HAHA! It's back up and running and it's now reading all the discs that it refused to read before. It took all of 10 minutes to fix it.

KM.

Finally someone listened and did what we said about taking it apart instead if buying a new one. Good job and now you just saved money too. :) 👍

I was gonna try that, but the motor in mine was making a rally bad sound, so i assumed it was more than just a dirty laser.
Oh well only 3 days to go till i get my PS2 back! yeah!.

I don't think that those disc read errors are generally caused by a dirty laser lens. But I gave it a clean anyway when I had it opened up. The few PS2 fixing guides I've read said that over 90% of PS2 disc reading problems are caused by the laser head shifting slightly out of position. There's a little gear wheel inside the CD drive that allows you to adjust the distance between the lens and disc. You just have to tweak it and try it with discs you know it wouldn't read before until you get it right. I tried 2 differrent settings before I got it to successfully read 2 PS2 games it wouldn't before and 2 DVDs that wouldn't work either. Huzzah! It was really easy.
