Practice starts tomorrow, so time for a new thread!

That was a horrible three weeks between races. I am starting to get the shakes from F1 withdrawl. They need to make a patch or something :)

Unfortunately for us U.S. folk, this race is being broadcast on CBS, which may cause many of us to curse and throw our TVs out the window on Sunday.

They do have patches kinda, called Formula 2/GP2
:p

kk, maybe not, but they do get closer to each other than F1.. I watched it wishing of F1 racing being that close

Just curious, but what's wrong with it being on CBS?

Bob Varsha, David Hobbs, and Steve Matchett will not be commentating.

Instead, we get some super-nasal sounding guy and Good Ol' Derek Daly. HOORAY!

Hopefully they've been fired. I'd like to see how the event turns out.

Yep, I'm surprised they find time to fit any 3 week breaks in, with the number of back-to-back races this year. I've been satisfying the itch with some old FIA season reviews though :)

Ferrari should be strong at Imola again this year, it'd take something special to live up to last year's race though.

Speed is a cable channel and the announcers there are experts on all forms of racing, but especially F1. CBS is available everywhere in the country and is much more mainstream, and the announcers (who do know what they're talking about and who both make appearances on Speed once in a while) have to dumb it down to make it more accessible to the wider audience that may end up watching it.

The commentators are pretty annoying, and the whole broadcast is dumbed down for the "common" American audience (CBS is a national network). Normally, the races are on SPEED (cable network), and the commentators are far more insightful and interesting.

Edit: Internet beat me to the punch! Second time I've been shamed like this today :)

does anybody know what time(eastern time) the practises and race is gonna be on? i went to the CBS website but their schedule isnt very detailed.

Will CBS have a replay? I usually dont wake up at 7 to watch the races so i watch speed's replay at 12.30. Will CBS have a replay?

CBS shows it delayed - it's on at 10 PDT, so in Toronto, that would be 1 PM?

The Speed sessions are live, practise is on at 8 AM (your time), as is quali.

Oh well... I knew that.

I mean, I lived for about 6 years in the States, so I knwo the difference between Speed channel and CBS. I was just wondering if you'd get commercial breaks and maybe that would be the reason. We also get a dumbed-down version here, since there's no specialized network. We also get 10-minute commercial breaks :ouch: At about 5 per race.

Thanks for the info though. Very helpful from all of you ;)

Yeah I don't like Ferrari but they should be strong, there's a bit of *****ing about some of the kerbs/curbs being change on the track. Now some teams are affected by this BECAUSE they had no idea about the changes.

Apr 23, 2006 San Marino Grand Prix Imola 8:00 a.m. CBS (1:00 p.m.)

It said ET for the column 8:00 was located in.

I didn't found a thing about a debacle about the kerbs, aside an article about how they'll put a strain to the v8 engines and Sato wondering if his hyper-modified wheelie bin will hold up on the chicanes and high-speed corners. :scared:

The CBS broadcast isn't a very good one, especially compared to the broadcast on SPEED. I am not quite as annoyed by the commentators as some, I much prefer Steve Matchett, David Hobbs, and Bob Varsha. When the races are shown on CBS, I tend to tune out the commentators much more than I do on SPEED.

Very true here, but unfortunately CBS also gets three more races this year. They also managed to pick up the Spanish GP, British GP, and somehow the Monaco GP.

SHCIEBE!

I can't believe it man.

That's 4 of the next 5 races!!! :scared:

SPEED should have replays of each of these races on the following Fridays.

Yea, Omnis, that was about my reaction. I hate to see them get Monaco, it is such a great race, and i fear that the CBS treatment will hurt it a little. But I guess we can always mute the tv.

I just hope Derek isn't there. He made me throw up a little bit in the back of my mouth during the canadian GP. It's one thing to dumb things down, but to get things dead-wrong is unacceptable.

I'm gonna go buy 4 bottles of Maalox to prepare for any potential agita.

How the bloody hell did CBS get Monaco? That is only the biggest F1 race of the year. It may also have just about the least amount of passing, but the track and its history more than makes up for that . . . very lame.

Oh god, it's on CBS? Shhhhhhiiiiiii.....

I hate DD. He's awful as a commentator. He's tolerable as an interviewer, but that's it.

Man, my race is ruined. I really hate this. I hope Speed will show it after CBS. If so, I'll watch that instead. Perhaps I'll watch it with LIVE TIMING first.

Blake is at this race with his dad. Lucky punk. Hopefully, he'll have a lot of photos for us.

Derek Daly isn't absolutely terrible, though I do agree he is better as an interviewer. But I will also say Daly is tolerable in bits and spurts as a commentator . . . still no where near as good as Matchett, Hobbs, or Varsha though.

Hmmm, I thought the title of this thread was San Marino GP....

I must be mistaken.

Sorry, it seems that I have gotten everyone off track.
But things should be fine once the first practice starts up and we all begin to look at the weekend of racing instead of looking ahead at the next month or so. Hopefully we all will be treated to a race as good as last year's. Regardless of who is commentating, it's the 22 guys that line up on the grid that really matter. As long as its an entertaining race, I'll get through it just fine.

ABC used to broadcast the Monaco GP from the late 1960's until 1991, as part of their "Wide World of Sports" program. They usually edited it for time, as it was rare to have the entire race shown, because it used to take almost 2 hours. Many times, it was tape-delayed for up to a week.

So don't go complaining about CBS getting the race, although I was looking forward to watching it live, since I'm going to be out for the day. I suppose the VCR will be pressed into service; unfortunately, the last race it taped was the 2005 USGP...

Here's to seeing someone (Kimi?!) breaking the Renault winning streak!

You guys should be happy cbs got monaco and not a different circuit instead. Its the most uneventful race of the calendar, next to none overtaking.

go Jarno and Williams!

I think it's one of the best races, because the track is so different compared to the others. It reminds me of Senna's race there.

Hmm... not looking good for Renault, now is it. But, then last year MS came from 13 positions to almost win it.

Fisi was bad. So bad he got knocked out before the final qualifying session which I'm sure Flavio ain't too happy about.

Maybe I'm glad I wont be watching this one live. I'll be using the "Live Timing" and then watching the recording of the CBS showing later in the day.
