I was wondering, what is the usage like when racing online? My son wants to try it but we are on HughesNet satellite service so we are only allowed 500MB a day of download.

Thanks in advance:tup:

Your download cap is neither here nor there.

What's relevant is:
  • Your latency (ms) - should be 50-60 or lower
  • Your Jitter (ms) - the lower the better
  • Your upload bandwidth (kbps) - at least 250kbps
  • Your download bandwidth (kbps - though hopefully Mbps) - at least 2Mbps

I'd imagine satellite internet might be a bit restricted on the first two, which is a pity.

I am looking at my "Control Center" but it is all jiberish to me...

Time to do a little research into what all these terms mean. Thanks again.

Download speed/bandwidth is how much stuff your connection can get from outside to you at once.
Upload speed/bandwidth is how much stuff your connection can get from you to outside at once.
Latency is how long it takes for your connection to connect you and the outside world.
Jitter is how variable (or stable) that latency is.

If you go to Speedtest.net and do a check to your nearest server (it'll show as a gold star) you'll get an idea of your upload/download speeds and your latency ("ping"). Pingtest.net will measure your latency and jitter.

I doubt it would work. Regardless of speeds or whatever, the problem is the connection won't be stable. You might not lag, but you will very likely be disconnected from rooms more often than not.

The problem is the world is spinning, so your dish is constantly grabbing new sattelites to connect with. When browsing the web or watching videos, it's no problem; the computer just catches up as soon as it can.

When your connected directly with somebody though, and you loose connection even for a second, you will be dropped from the room.

With that said though, it can't hurt to try!

Ummm, I guess not. Those numbers are HORRIBLE!👎

They're geostationary.

Which is its own problem. They're 25,000 miles away - there's an inherent latency issue. It'll take at least half a second for any packet to up get there and back, if you're lucky.

Yes. Yes they are.

I'd be going for "Your online GT5 experience will be appalling" on that, with a 1.4s latency (my humdrum average connection is 45ms) and a quarter of a second jitter (mine's 1ms).

Ya, moved to "the country" a couple years ago from a major metro area and hate it. 20 miles to the closest gas station, 25 mile drive to work, and 40 miles to the first "real" place I would call civilization...
