Well, this is my first post as a Broadband user!! :cheers: đź‘Ť THIS IS SOOOO MUCH BETTER! WOW! Don't worry dial uppers', I won't forget my humble beginings ;) but this is soo cool. Well i'm' getting ready to play STAR WARS: Galaxies. If you'd like to comment on your experience with dial up/broadband please do.
 
I will never go back. Down with Dial-Up, unless you're poor and can't afford it or something, but that's different.
 
I feel bad for the people who can't afford it.. Thats just so sad... :(

I mean cmon it sucks. It takes so long for pages to load.I hate it. It gets on my nerves.

Now I'm off to play PS2 Online with my 3mb cable(comcast hah). đź‘Ť
 
I was on roadrunner, then had to go to dial up, oh god it sucked, im back on my cable now :bg:
 
Not only did I start with dial-up, but AOL dial-up; and I live in one of those retired old fart neighborhoods. Backbone was so incredibly weak - I rarely connected at anything above 14kbps. 19.2 was a red-letter day. Five years I was on that garbage, man. Then, just last Christmas, life became what it was meant to be.

2987 up, 359 down. I highly recommend you set up some tweaks as soon as possible to optimize your new connection. Enjoy!

-I went from an East African phone line (max download 0.5 - 1 kB/s)

-to a South African phone line (downloads were around 5 kB/s)

-to a European phone line (Belgium, basically a normal 56k)

-ADSL ( 1 mb at the time , has been upgraded to 3 mb by now)

-and finally cable ( 4 mb download , 196 kb upload )
 
I haven't used Dial-up since 1998. It's either Broadband, or I won't use it.

When we got our computer a year or so ago, my wife was adamant about getting it hooked up "NOW". I let her connect through AOL just so that she could see the speeds. Our Cable wasn't due to connect for another two weeks.

As soon as the cable connected, she asked "Why didn't you tell me dial-up was so slow?"

Arrrghh!

I'm supposedly joining the big leagues today. We've had dialup since, ohh, 1991 or 92. Our second phone line is free, so it was never an issue. But finally the cost of Earthlink/Verizon aDSL has come down to something affordable so I signed up for a year, but it's taking forever for them to condition my phone line for it.
 
Dial-up is more expensive than broadband here if used more than 50 hours a month over here.

Currently using super slow dial-up but may get broadband(not fast either only 384Kbps) if service if available.
 
We just got broadband at our new house - I let my g/f arrange it and she went for the lowest option 150K d/l, theres 600K AND 1MB so I think I'll be upgrading to 1MB as soon as I can - Im on NTL does anyone else use NTL broadband ? Is it worth going to 1MB or would 600K be enough ??

I have not used dial up since 1999 maybe, but until about 6 months ago my cable provider was nearly as bad as the old dial up. Sometimes we could not get online, and there would be periods for months at a time where the cable connection was as bad as the dial up almost. But the cable provider installed some new cables recently, and everything is silky smooth.

I'm on NTL 150K :grumpy: Stupid parents, well mainly father he keeps hinting..."I might get 600K...I wonder.."
 
Thank you for the welcomes into the 'Enlightened'. I'm also proud because I bought all the hardware and intstalled it myself. I'm using a Lynksys Wireless-G router with my lap top. I don't know what the connection speed is exactly but it's super fast :eek:

It does suck mightily. Can't wait for the day when we get broadband. You never know, it might be this century. Download rate for me, when it's good, is 4.8kb/s. Yay.
 
On a good day with 31.2kbps.....Oh Yeah....Gotta love the Dial-Up.

i have dial-up. but i dont notice the slowness anymore, its just natural. but one day ill get broadband. and then i could finaly set my desktop up as a server.

I was talking with a few guys at work, thinking of things that the younger crowd never knew about. Lorrena Bobbit anyone? Fax machines that used thermal paper from a roll? Dial-up?

My guess is that in 3 years, there will be very few people in the free world on anything less than broadband.

Dialup... I first got internet when 14.4 was being phased out for 28.8. I was lucky and my computer came with a 28.8 modem :D

My guess is that in 3 years, there will be very few people in the free world on anything less than broadband.

Unfortunately, I don't think North America is going to get any of the crazy speeds the rest of the world gets anytime soon. The costs of even the most basic broadbands in some areas is just outrageous. 10mbps Ultra High speed connections cost over $100/month (canadian) with bandwidth limitations. Switzerland currently has 10+ mbps connections with no limits for a mere $50 Canadian per month. That's just 5 dollars more per month than I pay for my isp's 3mbps connection. Here's the odd thing though. It costs me $45/month canadian for dsl but I've got friends in the US paying $45+ USD for dsl with slower speeds. Is that right?

There's a lot of demand for high speed out here and ISPs haven't reduced prices even a little over the past 3 years. The standard speeds up here only went from 1.5 mbps to 3mbps 3 months ago.
 
Count me as one of the few still stuck on the phone line, and will be for at least 2 more years. :( (That's when I move out – There's absolutely, positively no way that my parents will pay for broadband.)

It's actually become tolerable now that Apple has built-in resumable downloads into the system... in other words, I can pause and resume downloads, and if the connection goes out, the download will automatically be paused. Never have to worry about a dropped connection causing a download loss again! :)
 
are there no broadband "lite" services in your area? It's usually either a 128kbps cable line or a 1.5mbps dsl line with download limitations. The costs are about half ($20 canadian) and are comparable to most dial up providers that offer unlimited usage (the cheapest dial up provider i've found up here is $12/month - 8 bucks more offers much better speed and doesnt tie up the phone line)
 
I don't think so. You see, I live in the boonies (or the "middle-of-****ing-nowhere", as Crabby would say). They have telephone lines going up here, but nothing else – No electricity or water lines, period. Cable is definitely out of the question, but DSL might be a possibility up here, but it would surely cost us a fortune, since we'd be the only line within a 10-mile radius, which ain't exactly efficient for the company. ;)
 
I use cable at my moms, but dial-up at my dads. I know alot of people hate it but I like the dial-up tone thing. beep beep beep-beep beep beep beep............ EEEEEEEEEE EEEERRRRRRRR UUURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR BRRRRRREEEEEEEEEE.
 
Dial-up does really suck...We had AOL dial-up for a long, long time, then got cable a couple years ago. But...Comcast got bought by SBC over here in California, and the connection got kinda messed up for a couple weeks. So...my mom got mad and got us DSL. Stupid DSL would only download at something like 50 kbps when the cable always got 200. Then...we moved to San Jose...big city, lots of people, and no broadband. Best we would be able to do is satelite, which is slower and comes in at $100/month USD. So....we've got to wait till SBC gets their stuff together and puts in broadband cable lines....they're coming in "soon"...like the end of the year. Till then, we're stuck with this dial-up that downloads around 5. And when cable does finally get here, we'll probably be paying around $50/month...so....bah. But...gotta pay to get rid of this stupid dial-up connection.
 
I've never had dial-up. I've had cable ever since last March.
 
ok, i just did the connection speed test thingy. I got a 1444/240 score. That's a 1.4mb download rate and 240kps upload rate. Why is upload rate so crappy? or is upload always much worse then download?
 
It's mostly that way,depend on your connection.If your upload was the same as your download speed you would be paying double then you are now.

I used to be on dial-up for about 2 years before switching over to cable(my mom was get tired of me constantly switching phone lines and especially tired of the bill that came every month.I used to pay more for dial-up then i do right now for cable,it's ridiculous).Right now got a 1500/350 connection.
