Saying Goodbye to Dial Up

Luckily I've never had to suffer the horrors of dial-up as I've been on cable ever since I got this PC in 2001. đź‘Ť Where I'm moving to in SC in only 11 days also has broadband so I won't have to suffer. :D

AOL is teh suck. I hated AOL SOOO much. When I finally got a dial-up networking ISP I was over-joyed...... sort of.

I play on Shadowfire. Just started 3 days ago.

Also, I also have expepierenced problems with GTP6. I have gotten the error page after posting manytimes. Although it does prevent doubleposting for me. I'm sure Jordan will get it all worked out soon.
 
Well, I've just joined the broadband generation. Two quick connections, restart my browser, and all the Macs are sharing aDSL connection wirelessly. So far it's pretty steamy compared to dialup. It's even snappy compared to work!

Ran the speed test and got 2611 / 276, or 326k/sec download.
 
@Duke - if you're going wireless, I'd strongly suggest mac address filtering. My neighbor and I used to be able to break into each other's wireless networks in absurdly short periods of time (usually just letting my pc idle for an hour). I later figured that I could block any mac addresses that dont belong to my network. Now my network is secured from his invasion attempts and I can still hack his because he hasn't figured hout how to set mac filtering :D.
 
If anybody wanted a read of NZ's struggling broadband market here is a good article. To cut it short as I understand it, Telecom owns all the copper wire network in New Zealand and can control the broadband market by using their own wires by providing poor and overly priced connections labelled as JetStream of 128kb/s. If you want a better connection speed there are quite a few JetSteam and other options but it's going to hurt your pocket if your after a residential service. Until the telephone network is unbundelled and avaliable for other companies to use, we aren't going anywhere.

I'm not sick of dial-up, although with increasing file download sizes and all the rest it does post the question what it would be like to have it.

^^^That's exactly why I didn't go with a wireless router.

I got cable a few months ago, had Netzero dial-up before the switch. I'll never go back to dial-up again.
 
Well, i went wireless because I have 3 desktop machines and a laptop (in 3 different rooms on 2 floors) sharing files and printers and an internet connection. My house would be a tangle of Cat 5 cable if I didn't go wireless.
 
^^I guess it makes more sense for you to go wireless. You just have to be more careful.

Fortunately, I only had to hook up 2 computers (both of which are on the same floor).
