well guys welcome to the series, here we are at motegi/Sebring. the only thing i can say is man this will take alot of practice, for me because i dont know this track that well at all.

****PLEASE READ THE WEIGHT PENALTY RULE AGAIN******
it has changed again and hopefully for the last time, also remember use your race only car to race with, and use your practice car to practice.

race will be a "track meet" at twin rings motegi Sports Car Course, and here are the rules. when you come out of the pits you will be in the lead, hold your brakes until the final AI driver passes you, then start going (keep in mind your time wont start until you cross the start finish line again) run 10 laps, and record your times (by viewing the replay i would suggest) add them up and submit, and that is the race. sorry for the track meet, but there just arent enough series, and variety that allow race tires for me to make some of these nearly as competitive as the preseason race.

Cool. A 10 lapper. This ought to be fun. Now when you say Motegi Sports Course, you mean the Road Course, right?

Good luck guys.

Are we not to pass during the first 'lap' that isn't counted ?

as long as you are sitting still when the last place AI passes you, do whatever you want from there.

So does that first lap count as one of the 10, or not? Or not until the timer starts...

YLG, would you consider as a rule that we must stay in 6th place until we cross the start line?

Sort of as a rolling start concept.

But, it may be a moot point. As we wont know until we actually run our race how the AI stacks up. Heck, we may not even be able to compete with the AI. I know I couldn't last week at the spot race. I started in 6th and finished in 6th. ;)

EDIT: Duke not until the timer starts. Their should be one lap complete after you come out of the pits to where the timer starts.

BTW, are there any online time addition calculators?

Playing Devil's Advocate here ... is it against the rules to keep waiting after the last AI car has passed you? In order to guarantee yourself a clear track ahead?

If so, that's cool, but why not just run 10 time trial laps?

If not, how far behind the 5th place car is acceptable when the race starts?

...

Is tire wear enabled for the "track meet"? I've never done one before. If it is, how well will tires hold up over 10 laps? Is a pit stop going to be necessary?

...

Ran some practice laps:

T1 0'35.2
T2 ?'??.? (Must be in an awkward spot, because I don't remember seeing it)
T3 1'30.9

I would second this idea - good one. Make sure that the traffic affects everybody equally during the timed run.

I'll see if I can find a time calculator. I've tried in Excel and it always screws it up by trying to convert it to dates.

One could possibly wait for so long as not to have any AI in the way. Thus making for unobstructed laps.

Interesting. Good point Luxy. You devious little son of a... Just kidding. :)
This is an extremely good point. Could this be adverted by racers having to post thier margin of victory?

If so, I'm all for a pit stop. Usually in SCCA events, at least one pit stop is required. Please correct me if I'm wrong. However, I don't want to stir the proverbial pot. Just tossin out ideas. :)

In the SWC Touring Car (and GT) series, I don't recall ever seeing pit stops--at least not planned stops. :ouch:
That's not to say that we can't incorporate them, it's just an observation.

Yes QB, you are correct. After refreshing my memory, there are no mandadory pit-stops. I had confused the rule that races are 50 minutes, not 50 laps, where a pit would probably have to happen. :ouch:

Who? Me?

There seems to be three possible scenarios for how the race will go down (if anyone can think of another one, speak up ... ) :

1. The field is faster than us, and we don't have to worry about the gap.

2. We're even with, or faster than the field and we don't pass the other cars on the warm-up lap, or let them get too far ahead.

3. We're even with, or faster than the field, but do let them have a healthy lead.

Scenario 1 is easy, and Scenario 3 is easy consistency-wise. Scenario 2 is the most interesting, but the most difficult to regulate  Since the spirit of the series is fun, I'd choose number 2, despite the consistency problem :)

I like the idea of a pit stop! Ideally, you'd be able to pass the field by lap 5, but get re-passed by at least a few cars while in the pits. Depending on the tires, we'd have to make the pit stop on lap 5 mandatory (if the tires last 10 laps, one could pit on lap 1 or lap 9 to avoid traffic :yuck: ) The BTCC has mandatory pit stop, I believe, if the SCCA doesn't :p

I love all this strategy stuff 👍

...

Ran some more laps, with the DFP this time, and improved a bit.

0'34.9
1'04.4
1'30.0

EDIT:

Did a bit of looking around.

"Track Meet" doesn't have tire wear, which probably means you can't make a pit stop, even if you wanted to. The car start about evenly spread out around the track. So, if you wait for the last place car to pass you, the first place car is going to be 3/4 of the way around the track anyway.

"Family Cup" does have tire wear, it's got a rolling start, and you can choose the difficulty of the field ... it's perfect for what we're doing, but I can't find a way to have a race that's anything but 2 laps

I'm all for Senario 2. It'll really test driver skill. I like the idea of a mandatory pit on lap 5. Bring some more fun into it. :)

yeah it doesnt have tire wear, and yes the field is pretty spread out, these are the 2 things i didnt like about using the track meet as a race, but really there is no other way, all the other races that allow race tires are filled with LM cars that would lap us a couple of times and we would only be able to finish 12-13 laps of a 15 lap race. it wont let you use your garage cars in arcade mode, and even if it did, it would make you use sport tires since these arent "race cars" so unfortunately this is what we are stuck with.

if people could be self governing enough to exit the final turn at speed (meaning drive that last chicane like you were racing) and they happen to pass the 5th place AI on that straight approaching the start line, i have no problem with that. this way it keeps you in traffic, as i have noticed that in other track meets, that the AI seems to be a little slower than me, but not too bad, and the seperation between them seems to be just right to keep you in traffic, with a lap or so of clear track. the AI also usually pairs off from what i have noticed.

in regards to pit stops, later in the series (even if it is a track meet) i will have at least one race with a mandatory pit stop, even if your tires arent worn.

unfortunately PD didnt leave us with many options in arcade mode otherwise this series would be alot easier to plan/execute. but try to have fun reguardless guys, remember, the AI is almost purely for decoration, the real competition is here, so lets go racing shall we?

Pass before you take the green at the S/F line?

Technically speaking, it's green when the first car floors it. So passing is bound to happen.

Still waiting for the practice car to be delivered to the track.

This track is killing me. It feels like I'm braking either too early or too late on every stinking corner. It's going to take some getting used to.

On the plus side, I've got a good feeling about my times (when I'm doing things right). I think that with a little more work, I'll be able to put in some times that will be competitive. Now that I know how far behind I am (thanks to the track day), I can set some real goals, and work on getting my driving at least closer to par, if not on par, with some of the drivers here.

(Some of y'all are scary fast, by the way)

Each car cannot pass until it reaches the start/finish line. You can be all ready and set up, but you may not pass till you take the green individually from the starter.

im just saying IF you get that last chicane JUST right, and you do happen to pass ON THE STRAIGHT because of your exit speed being higher, that is fine, however it is my experience that on these track meets, the AI cars are faster in a straight line, and you do all your passing under braking and cornering. so chances are you wont pass on the straight anyway, all im saying is that the computer sometimes does it when it is doing the rolling starts, so if you do it i'll allow it, but only on the straight approaching the start finish line.

Just ran some practice runs. Have I mentioned that I hate this track? I can't seem to get good lines.

T1 0:35.816
T2 1:05.984
T3 1:32.056

Still tuning though so hopefully I can knock off another second or two overall.

Did you run the WRS Week 7, bleu? For you, or anyone else who's interested, there's a video on this page of a very fast lap around Motegi East that shows the line for the back half of the track 👍

Just scroll down to "Race 7" :)

I did but didn't fair to well. I'll watch and study the video again.

wowwie!
I just ran my race and it was great. I won't post my opponents here yet because I don't know if I am allowed to or not. I stayed behind the 5th place car and was right on his butt when we started. I managed to get out in front but there was an incident on lap 8. yeehaw!

Man, I'm having trouble with this track. I was very consistent at Tsukuba but here at Motegi I'm having trouble nailing it down. I've improved the car setup a little but I can't hold it together for a magic lap. I've seen T2 splits the better part of a second faster than my current ET, but somehow I always let that go in the last quadrant, even without any major mistakes.

This track wants you to attack it aggressively but the lack of good landmarks means that a just little too aggressive puts you in the kitty litter.

I suspect I've got more than a second to make up to be in the hunt.

Yea, it's easy to miss your braking zones here. The twilight lighting washes out trackside details so you have to rely on markers for braking... which is fine as long as they're around. Usually, I'm a 'site picture' guy when it comes to braking, here I find myself looking for grass blobs or "marbles" just to remember where to brake.

I like the track, but the lighting is the pits. Dunno, maybe it's just me but I could probably pick up a second easy if they just used plain normal daylight.

I think I've also about hit my talent limits in a FWD car. Getting that last few tenths out of the (puts sponsership cap on :dopey: ) VirtualTime Racing Team Acura TSX is tough in the braking zones when it's hard to tell exactly where you are. But the car is otherwise pretty good.

I think I'm going to hold off till the last minute on Sunday night to run my race. I've just been too busy to even practice much, let alone get time to sort out the car.

Good series, btw, even though I've just spent a whole post griping :) But hey, what do racers do when they're not racing if they're not griping about racing? :p

ha ha ha!! im glad im not having problems with this track. i just did this track not long ago in the F1 Champ so im familiar. my car is driveing sweet. i think this will be a strong race for me, maybe even a top 3.

I've given up on chasing my hotlap. Every time that I'm in pursuit of my hotlap, I end up driving just a wee bit too aggressively, and end up sideways in the gravel.

Tonight and tomorrow I'm going to work for consistency. It might net me slightly slower lap times, but if I can keep from making big mistakes, I think that'll pay off much bigger in my overall time.
